Custom Creations was very responsive. They were always on time for appointments and finished as promised. Before choosing Custom Creations, I talked with several company's and none of them had the same insight or understanding of the job at hand. Scott was able to provide a very competitive proposal, which happened to be the lowest, but I would have hired even if he weren't the lowest. I trusted him and believe he'd deliver what he promised. When Scott came out for the site evaluation, he took the time to completely understand what I wanted him to do, as well, what my overall goals were for the larger project. He was able to offer me assistance in the some others areas of my project without additional cost, because he was there and could do it. That's real customer understanding and customer service. I would highly recommend Scott's services to anyone I know. Thanks, Scott.

We hired Excel Construction few months ago and we just finished our entire home remodeling project. We researched, met and interviewed few other remodeling companies before we decide to hire Excel Construction and we couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with our great decision. We love Eyal and the ideas/solutions that he brought to the project. His design team was perfect for us and they always has few options for us to think of before we took the right decision. We’ve noticed very clear that everyone on the job was skilled and professional in his own trade and specialty. They did a perfect job by keeping the house as clean as they could and they were very respectful of our space. We remodeled our entire house including the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, garage, laundry room and bedrooms!!! We are super happy with the new house that we got and the complete transformation of it. Excel Construction are highly recommended and we already recommended them to few of our friends.

I choose Adrian over other companies because he was quick to answer my multiple questions and was always polite . Highly recommended in my opinion. He did our retaining wall and it turned out great. He handled all permits, and inspections per city codes. Thank you Adrian. We will call you in the future for our room addition project.

I had a GREAT experience with Daniel from World Class Construction! I did not know him before, but he is now my "go to " guy. I had a smaller but very difficult job with some drainage issues and he came up with good suggestions on a repair and his cost and service were great. Also had some additional drywall work done and he was also very fair and competitive. Daniel was also very professional in every aspect, from the contract to finshing the work.

We are in the process of remodeling three bathrooms in our house with Skyline Construction. Two of the three are mostly finished and we love them! We are about to start on the master bathroom. Eric has been wonderful to work with and we feel lucky to have found him. He is always very responsive and understanding of our needs. He’s been extremely flexible with a chaotic schedule of ours and he’s made sure we’ve been happy with the results every step of the way. He is very knowledgeable and is great at explaining everything to us. His team along with the work is A+++. We can’t recommend him enough!

This letter will serve as a highly recommendation for the service that La Roca Builder did for us, on our new home construction. They have a great team that took care of all the guess work of home construction. They made sure we we’re always informed on how the city works with submitting plans and time frame of completion. We interviewed many contractors, but most of them couldn’t take care of the entire project and that’s why we hired them. Our home looks beautiful and we owe it all to Christian and his team from LA Rocca Builders not to mentioned J Balian Construction and Grandeur Construction, 3 teams, each team took care of different aspects of the projects all under one Roof; they all work together amazing! we love that they took care of it all, that made our new home build possible. 5 stars all the way Eddie Steeples Pacific Palisades P.S they wanted me to include that I was the actor that was on the show “My Name is Earl” aka “Crabman” And I gladly said yes, lol. Thanks Christian!

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

Just want to say I am so impressed with Moriah Remodeling. I was working with Eran S. He is my project manager. and with his crew. You couldn't ask for anyone better. The attention Eran gives to detail is helpful and refreshing. We are doing a complete renovation of our kitchen, powder room, flooring, family room, two bathroom and laundry room. We are so pleased with the them, they are always on time, protect your flooring, furniture. ... everything is so organized and surprisingly we were able to use their company portal. Today it is very hard to find a reliable company and we would defiantly will recommend this company.

Double oak construction is by far the best experience I have ever had. We just recently purchased our first home and our budget was low. They gave me great price we can afford and ideas. They remodeled my garage into a living space, patio cover, and landscaping. My husband and I couldn’t be more satisfied of the outcome. Highly recommend them.

We spent the last year with our home in shambles because we decided to remodel our kitchen and ended up with a contractor that had no ethics. One error after the other, the final straw was when the "contractor" literally burst one of our pipes and almost caught our house on fire and melted our electrical line without even bothering to tell us. There was a bright light in the midst of the wreckage. When Meckauer Design and Build came to evaluate our home Robert identify the errors, came up with incredible solutions no one else seem to be able to find, he quickly assessed and found that the previous contractor did not even have the permits in place even though he had posted papers on our home. Yes the previous contractor lied and put our home at risk! Robert knew the laws surrounding construction and how to rectify what has happened to us. Everything he does is in blueprints and has gotten done efficient and effectively. Robert documents and shares his knowledge on how to right a wrong. He is very well versed on California Contractors License boards regulations and bonding. If you need help with filing papers or trying to resolve something with another contractor he will walk you through the steps. He does not only the know the laws, he follows the law and will help you understand the law. What a team! Jean his office manager is continually checking, keeping us informed. and and Robert has more in the past few weeks than the other contractor was in the entire year and it is done right with real live inspections. This has been challenging year and seeing the progress in the kitchen these past few week has been such a treat. It has been a pleasure to be here while talented professionals who are righting wrongs. The work is beautiful and the contractors Robert works with and has choose have been both skilled and professional. We have repeated been shocked when we came home to clean countertops when dry wall has been cut and clean floors when wood work has been done. If anyone finds themselves looking for someone who can assess work, correct work, or work from the ground up this is the go to company. Our only wish is that we had Robert and Jean from the start. Out of this frustrating series of events the end has been a pleasure because of the insight these professionals have brought to the job. We are now resting assured that our home is safe and well take care of because of their ethics, insight and skills.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
