We hired Excel Construction few months ago and we just finished our entire home remodeling project. We researched, met and interviewed few other remodeling companies before we decide to hire Excel Construction and we couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with our great decision. We love Eyal and the ideas/solutions that he brought to the project. His design team was perfect for us and they always has few options for us to think of before we took the right decision. We’ve noticed very clear that everyone on the job was skilled and professional in his own trade and specialty. They did a perfect job by keeping the house as clean as they could and they were very respectful of our space. We remodeled our entire house including the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, garage, laundry room and bedrooms!!! We are super happy with the new house that we got and the complete transformation of it. Excel Construction are highly recommended and we already recommended them to few of our friends.

From the first time Jay came out to give an estimate, I knew he was someone I wanted to work with. Throughout the process, he stayed in constant communication and was always professional. His work in installing 5 doors around my house and garage was excellent. He's a problem solver with a great attitude. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Haggerty Construction!

Saeed was extremely professional, kind and quick. He came to my apartment within a half hour of my request, prepared with all of his tools, and got right to work. He then proceeded to quickly build the dresser I had requested, and additionally help me screw together my new headboard. I am very appreciative of his work and would highly recommend him to anyone in need of a wonderful handyman. Thank you Saeed!

First time working with Cal Engeneers, I specifically worked with Khalil, and Lazar, they did an incredible job. We had a one bedroom unit that has not been renovate din over 8 years, they came in, and had the whole place redone in about 11 days. Whole new laminate flooring put in, carpets removed, walls painted, popcorn Celing removed, and many cabinets and closets repainted. Essentially remodeled the entire 1 bedroom apartment. They came in under budget for what I expected and did a lot more than asked. Such as refinish the bathtub and clear out grout. very fast work, always on time, easy to reach and very fair prices. and an over all excellent experience. Just handed them another job in another property.

Daniel, Mario and the rest of the team at World Class Construction are honestly the best crew I’ve ever hired, and I’ve done quite a few remodeling projects over the last 20 years. They are extremely professional, courteous, fairly priced, and best of all – fast! My wife and I were very impressed by the speed at which our luxury bathroom remodel was completed, and trust me when I say this was no ordinary job…. everything was custom, and they stepped up to the challenge and delivered. Overall, we are 100% satisfied – so satisfied in fact, that we immediately hired them again to remodel our garage conversion project. Thank you World Class Construction!! (PS, a lot of companies ask you to write a review… we were not asked – our bathroom just looks that AWESOME ☺.)

I have worked with many contractors on various home and office projects. This was my first time building out a retail store on a tight budget, with champagne taste. Brad & David turned out to be the ideal contractors for the job. These guys don’t just build what we agreed upon, they made me aware of all my choices beforehand and helped guide me to all the right design decisions. And even their crews of builders and painters were exceptional craftsmen. Brad & David brought my project in exactly on budget and before the deadlines. They are real pros and every question and request from me was promptly responded to. I will happily work with them again and feel lucky to have found them.

I contacted Dave to replace a side door to my garage and to help with a badly painted fence including a side gate. The paint was falling off! We both thought the paint could be scraped off, that did not work. All the boards had to be removed and replaced. Dave and his crew were professional, on time, worked steadly and cleaned up properly before leaving each day. Before work started Dave inspected the job. Dave gave me a written estimate breaking down each cost of the Job. Job well done Dave.

A to Z Construction performed 2 complete bathroom remodels ( down to the studs) and repaired all the plumbing and prior water damage. Their crew had all the necessary skills to perform the work and worked every day until the job was complete. They added a second crew for the second bathroom which was much appreciated and took weeks off the completion time. Work was completed ahead of schedule. Very happy with the results. Highly recommended.

We did a lot of research to find the right contractor to build us a free-standing recreation room. We actually hired a different contractor first, simply based on having the lowest price. What a terrible decision. We quickly came to regret it, and fired that contractor as soon as we could — a costly misjudgment. Even though Owl Construction’s cost was a bit more, though very reasonable, we knew he was the right contractor for us. Guy Hazan of Owl Construction is fantastic. He was so easy to work with. He’s a compassionate listener, and kept us informed and at ease through the entire process. I don’t know much about construction, and had never undergone a project of this size, but Guy was there every step of the way. He explained everything very clearly and addressed any questions or concerns we had from day one to the completion of the project. I also must mention the Amazing Anesta. Anesta is a gem to this company. She kept the communication light and easy, and got the job done. She is responsive, dependable, organized and kind. The final building is stunning. The contractors did such a great job all around. To think what a nightmare it would have been to have continued with that original contractor who bullied and didn’t listen. Owl Construction was absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Being a person who tends to fall into a true Do-It-Yourselfer, I was reticent in having someone else do our Master Bath and Powder room remodel. I simply didn’t have the time between work and family commitments; I was forced to relinquish the job to someone else. I spent a month interviewing contractors, with roughly 50% no shows and 40% I wouldn’t trust building a dog house, let alone even letting them into my home. Of the remaining 10%, TREEiUM (specifically ‘Guy Borenstein’) stood out as being one of the top three. After a final interview and some pencil sharpening, I gave the nod to TREEiUM. TREEiUM started when the said they would, and finished the job on time and within budget. Best part of all, there was no DRAMA! Guy was there every step of the way, and answered any and all questions I had, even on the weekend! Do your homework when vetting these contracting companies; TREEiUM should be one of your final three contractors. From my perspective, if you are looking for a contracting company, I highly recommend TREEiUM and Guy Borenstein!

Centrepoint is about team work to get the job done and done with high quality. I helped hired them for my daughter’s garage conversion into an accessory dwelling unit which we saw as a great investment for extra income. We gutted the garage, prepared architectural plans, got it approved and started the project. The team at centrepoint was diligent and could not have been easier to work with. The ADU has all the amenities small kitchen, walk-in shower, bedroom, living room and washer/dryer unit. Centrepoint GC Alon recommend what should be added to the ADU to get the most for our buck when renting it out. I couldn't recommend them enough. They did such an amazing job I want to live there :) here is few picture of the finish ADU

I worked with lior and his team to re-do both of the bathroom in our home in Woodland Hills and could not be happier with his work. Lior was a referral to me, I was so thankful for the introduction. He came out and gave us a quote for the project and kept his word through to the end of the project. He did exactly what we asked for and make recommendations throughout that helped in our decision making. This is the first big project that my wife and I had done, and I really appreciated lior helping explain the process and why each step was taking place. We receive so many compliments on how wonderful everything looks and already are working with lior again on garage conversion and have referred him to our neighbors as well! Excited to get to work with him and the rest of his crew again! Thanks, for all your hard work! - The Morales

I recently remodeled my kitchen which included taking out an existing wall and replacing it with a beam in order to create a more open layout. When I first had the idea, I was clueless as to where to begin. Josh from 1OAK came out and gave me an initial price on the plans. I ended up not only having them do my blueprint and engineering and submitting to the city for their approval, but eventually I hired them for the entire job. Im very glad that I did. Not once did I feel hesitant as to whether they were the right company. They showed up on time, were professional, constant customer service and contact from the office, as well as open to my ideas and preferences for colors and materials. They really helped me build my dream kitchen. Im planning on having them come back to remodel my master bathroom in a few months. Wonderful company. Highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
