Steve is my go-to handyman. He is very very good! Smart, responsible and really good at what he does. I hired him for a move that required a lot of furniture assembly. Not only did he do his job super fast, he also took on the management of my movers. I hired him for another project - a HUGE and very complicated IKEA wardrobe. He assembled it no time and no single bolt was left (you know how hard that is with IKEA). I love working with Steve and will definitely hire him again. I recommend him to all my family and friends.

Harp has been incredibly helpful across a variety of issues. A friend recommended him to help move a piece of furniture to a resale shop and I have since called on him to help with a variety of furniture moving and more difficult house/handyman needs (hanging a VERY heavy mirror, installing bathroom towel rods etc). I not only recommend Harp because he's helpful across a variety of issues, he's also a really great person. I've enjoyed getting to know him and would recommend him to anyone. I've already have recommended him to family and friends who also have been very satisfied with his service.

Our customer was very happy with the work and how Handyman was able to schedule a date and time on a Sunday. We will continue to use Handyman whenever we can. We would also recommend him to our customers if they are looking to book an assembly job by themselves. Worth the money!

I'm a real person, I work at a tech startup in SF, and just having moved to a new part of the city - didn't feel like assembling furniture AND having to unpack. I had some NON-IKEA, but similar, furniture that needed to be assembled. I had looked at some other popular task sites but they were showing me candidates that didn't exactly look "handyman-capable", and were conveniently charging ridiculous hourly rates. That's when I searched another local list and found Chao's post for "handyman services"; we easily negotiated a fair arrangement and he was able to come that SAME DAY. I was initially nervous waiting for him to arrive but when Chao showed up - I felt like I won the lottery. He brought his own tools and didn't want to waste time on small talk. THIS GUY IS SERIOUSLY A PROFESSIONAL HANDYMAN, & FURNITURE ASSEMBLY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT. Within his first 5 minutes on site, He took that first furniture box with 1000 pieces and had methodically and systematically placed them in an orderly fashion and quickly began assembly -- paying strict accordance to instructions detail. WHEN CHAO WAS DONE, THERE WERE NO EXTRA OR MISSING PIECES!!! And, even though this furniture was "cheap", it was assembled as best as possible. Chao is an expert. I had some difficult space constraints that he had to work within but he just adapted. He had lots of tricks too, like unfolding the packaging box to protect my floor. Using a piece of cardboard to protect the furniture during hammer-assembly steps, etc... This guy is PROFESSIONAL and I highly recommend him.

Ricardo was very meticulous on the project he had completed for us (hide wires behind tv, move electrical outlets, paint etc) . He was always on time and never late. Reasonable in pricing compared to the others. I would definitely hire him again and he is now my go too handyman for future jobs. Ricardo is trustworthy, professional and safe. Thank you Ricardo!

I needed some paint and other hauling. I decided at the same time I would get a new kitchen faucet installed. Every aspect was flawless and pleasant. Good communication, fast response, first rate work, and a fraction of the price of others. I will use for my other handyman needs.

I hired Keian over another electrician partly b/c of his rates and partly b/c he said he also did handyman work, which I needed as well. (I was happy that he quoted a handyman rate for installing shelves and painting). He removed 2 florescent lights and installed two ceiling lamps, which was great! I was satisfied with the end result of all his work, but it took a fair amount of communication and re-do of some of the work.

Andrew was thorough and prompt. He recommended and installed ceiling speakers; fixed a bunch of patch holes that a previous contractor neglected to patch; recommended and acquired paints and materials. When a job was out of his comfortable skill set he let us know. As an aside, he looks a little older then his profile picture, which was a little offsetting at first. That said with age comes experience, and he has a wealth of skills and the right attitude. I would definitely recommend working with him again, and will be running future projects by him as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
