I had a leaky toilet in my powder room which ruined some of the flooring. Andia came with several professionals and they replaced my flooring and installed a new toilet. They were totally professional and did a great job. I would use them again and recommend them to anyone who needs help with a project.

Robin built us a door/wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. It took 3.5 days (including the necessary drying time). We were impressed by the quality of his framing. He had great judgement about where to place the door. He relocated the recessed lights in order to center them in the newly created hallway. Robin made sure that the molding, wall texture, door and door knobs would match our existing stuff. I cannot wait to hire Robin back to replace our carpets with hardwood flooring.

If I could I'd give Benito 6 stars out of 5. He did an excellent job, he was always on time and worked very hard to get us exactly what we wanted. He definitely takes pride in his work. We had Benito basically redo our entire house. He installed hardwood floors downstairs & on the stairs, baseboards throughout the entire house, carpet in all bedrooms and vinyl for the bathrooms. I'd certainly hire Benito again, and I'd recommend him to family & friends.

Jose takes pride in the work he does, it’s evident by all the fine details. Jose made sure to not only put a barrier up so dust did not go in other places of my house, he laid plastic on the floor. At the end of the job he dusted, cleaned windows and made sure he left without a trace. He has constant communication with arrival & departure time. I’ve already booked him for our next project!

Sam is a very hard worker. He stained my very old wood floors and they turned out beautifully. It took him longer than expected, but he did keep working at it until I was satisfied. He also did excellent electrical work!

I'm glad the original contractor (Joe) never showed up for the job 8am per appointment (we cleared the garage and put everything in the yard out in the open ready foe Joe. You can just image how frustrated we were when the contractor did not show up or even call by 4pm). Mario from Creative responded to my online search and start working that very evening. Mario went the extra mile preparing before applying the epoxy paint on the garage floor. It was all completed the very next day. First class workmanship. While we waiting for the floor to dry. We already scheduled for Mario to come back next week to start working on the driveway. Two thumbs up highly recommended. D 9/9/2016

We completely remodeled our master bathroom. This included floor and shower tile, new lights/fan/toilet/mirrors/vanity/pocket door, cabinet resurfacing (kept the old cabinet insides, sinks and counter tops), and overall painting. I chose Eddie because he had great reviews, was very friendly, and was always punctual with our meetings. Eddie did an excellent job on all the parts of the bathroom. The 30 year old cabinets look brand new. The tile is beautiful. All the mirrors, door, cabinets and accessories were hung very professionally. He definitely takes your ideas and works with you to make them feasible. The entire project took a little longer than I'd expected (3+ weeks), but it was worth it. The only slight issue I have is I wish I'd known how smelly the "hot mop" day was beforehand, so I could keep the tar smell from the rest of the house! Also, he provided a list of materials I was supposed to purchase for the project, but it wasn't complete at the start so I had to go back to the store a few times to buy more items. Overall, I'm very satisfied with Eddie's work, and will definitely be calling him for more jobs in the future.

Lauro and Omar did such a great job installing tile in our bathrooms and laundry room that we had them also install our hardwood floor throughout the house and do the back splash behind the kitchen counter. We are very pleased with the results. They are very fair priced and very polite. Looking forward to having them working on my next project.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

We decided to install hardwood floor in all of the down stairs and tiles in bathrooms. We consider 5 local reputable flooring companies and out of these five companies "Hardwood and Tile Discounters" were the most professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. Their price very good. They delivered a good quality workmanship, and they warranty their work. I have recommend them to some of my relatives, and they have had similar experience. So i strongly recommend Hardwood and Tile Discounters Regards, Sam G

Amadors quality of workmanship was great and was very knowledgeable. I asked him if he can help with the demolition of my current flooring and prepping for flooring in my first home. He went above and beyond on the work that was done and also helped us with advice on how to save money as this was my first time flooring. I spoke with many contractors prior to Amador but he was straight forward and gave me the most honest prices and advice. I will definitely contact him again for all my future flooring work. Thank you!!

CJ Hardwood Floors explained everything and answered any questions we had. True professionalism, did a quality job, was on the job when they said they would be. Always asked if the work times were good for us, made it a point to work in a manner that allowed us to function without preventing the work from being done in a timley manner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
