Introduction: I'm a professional music instructor with over 16 years of teaching experience. I offer lessons for guitar, bass, elementary piano, composition, and music theory. I've had students as young as 5 and as old as 70 with a variety of different learning styles. While lessons are designed to be fun and accessible for players of all ages and skill levels, they're also tailored to assist each student in achieving their goals. I also prefer to format and administer my curriculum as though music were a language. Thus, a lesson with me would touch on a variety of topics typically encountered in a language class (as well as some additional topics that aren't): - theory = grammar - ear training = vocabulary - sight reading = literacy skills - composition = speech writing - repertoire = speech memorization - technique/articulations = enunciation - improvisation & collaborative skills = basic conversation skills - musicianship skills = musical multitasking (singing and playing simultaneously, etc.) - recording experience, etc. Regarding my history, I've been a guitarist since 1991. My musical development took place in a highly social environment. I started playing in bands as early as freshman year of high school. By senior year I was fulfilling my fine arts graduation requirement by offering pro bono guitar lessons to my peers at school. While attending Diablo Valley College in 2005, I was one of the MACCC scholarship recipients for one of my orchestral compositions. From 2010 to 2011 I worked for Ubisoft on the ROCKSMITH development team as a note tracker. During that time I was also a keyboardist in a band that landed gigs at major league venues like Slim's in San Francisco. Since moving to Sacramento in 2012, I worked a number of music jobs in addition to teaching: session guitarist for studio recordings and live events, transcriber and arranger of charts for various ensembles, and composer of original music for wedding ceremonies. In the fall of 2017 I graduated Cum Laude from CSUS with a Bachelor of Music degree in theory & composition. I find it highly rewarding to see a musician develop before my eyes and to know that I participated.

I wanted to make a wedding present for my fiancé and was looking for a musician to write music to a poem that he liked to make it a song. I came across Chris’ profile online and decided to try him because his musical tastes seemed very similar to the ones of my fiance’s. Chris responded quickly to my initial inquiry and we set up an appointment a few days later. He was very attentive and thorough gathering information about my fiancé’s music tastes and was able to come up with a rough guitar draft on our first meeting. He picked up intuitively what I had in mind and gave very good suggestions about how to improve original ideas at the same incorporating my ideas as well. He also customized the tune of the song to my voice. The whole process took several weeks during which Chris updated me regularly about the progress and sent me drafts of the song to practice with. Besides composing, Chris did music arrangement, editing and recording. He did a great job adding different instruments to enhance the melody and the final draft of the song came out wonderful. It fitted the original poem in terms of rhythm, mood and meaning. Chris is professional, personable and pleasant to work with. He seems to possess great knowledge about music and composing and shares his talent with enthusiasm. His rates were very reasonable considering I had a custom- written song to boast of at the end. I am very satisfied with the process of working with Chris and with the final product and definitely recommend his services.

Chris Lee and the East Bay music academy have been an enormous influence on my playing and my life. Chris is a highly organized, professional teacher as well as a phenomenal player and even more astounding composer/theoretician. His approach to music theory, while staggeringly comprehensive, is completely accessible, and I found that his conception of theory is in many instances more concise, elegant, logical, and practical than that presented in college theory courses. Moreover, the open-minded, experimental attitude which he brings to every aspect of his instruction, from theory to technique, has taught me how to grow continually as a musician long after I stopped taking lessons, and to be effective as my own teacher. Chris Lee transformed me from a clueless teenager into a professional musician, and I have no doubt that he can do the same for any earnest student.

Chris Lee has been teaching my 11 year old son since May 2011. He’s been instructing my son in the following areas: • Electric guitar, • Bass guitar, • Harmonica, and • Reading/writing music. Chris is very patient and keeps my son motivated. The lessons are exciting which keeps my son interested and yearning to learn more. This helps in my son practicing without it being a chore. Chris encourages his students to write their own music using the computer and lined note sheets. He also gives my son confidence in his musical aspirations. I feel that Chris’ methods of instruction have helped my son excel in the musical area. My son is ready to begin taking a Jr. College level Music Theory class because of Chris’ instruction.

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Before you consider finding an instructor I would suggest establishing a network of friends and/or other musicians that would put you in social music situations on a regular basis. That should help you refine what your goals are. Knowing your goals should help you evaluate a potential instructor's credentials.
