Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get a piano tuned?

It costs anywhere from $110-$205 to get your piano tuned. Most customers pay between $140 and $150. Some piano tuners may charge hourly rates. The average hourly rate is $60.

Should you tip piano tuners?

Tipping piano tuners isn’t customary. If you had a great experience with a piano tuner, you can also show your appreciation by leaving a review on Thumbtack.

Is piano tuning hard?

Tuning a piano can be difficult if you haven’t done it before and don’t have the correct tools. For example, you’ll need a piano tuning lever, tips, electronic chromatic tuner and mutes. If you don’t have the tools or experience, you might be better off hiring a professional to tune your piano.

What happens if you don't tune a piano?

Tunings can help prevent damage and maintain your piano. When you tune your piano, you’re correcting its pitch. So if you go too long without tuning your piano, the pitch will likely drop — which can add tension to your piano’s structure, according to the Piano Technicians Guild.

Is it worth tuning an old piano?

It may be worth tuning your old piano, especially if it’s highly valued or has sentimental value. Bring your piano to an expert piano tuner. They can assess your instrument and help you determine if it can be restored.

Why do my piano keys squeak?

If your piano keys are squeaking, it may be because something is stuck between the keys. Or, your piano may be dirty. You may be able to fix your keys. If not, hire a professional to take a look at the problem and perform the repairs.

How often should you tune a piano?

Some experts recommend tuning your piano at least two or four times a year, according to the Piano Technicians Guild. You should always see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific piano. And you should schedule additional tunings as needed.

How long does piano tuning take?

Tuning your piano might take a few hours or less. Before your appointment, ask your piano tuner how long the process will take.

Jeff is absolutely one of the most professional and courteous piano tuner/appraisers I have met. He called me the night before my appointment as a much needed courtesy. He showed up on time, was polite, even with my toddler underfoot. He tuned our piano that had not been tuned in over 10 years and made it sound wonderful. He also took the time to talk directly to my State Farm insurance agent so that my insurance appraisal (another service he offers) met the requirements of my carrier. Most importantly, there were no hidden fees, I paid what he said it would cost when he initially made the appointment. I also found his price was very reasonable for his level of expertise and quality of his work. Thank you Jeff, see you at the end of the year for another tune!
