Mark S. says, "I believe I made the right decision choosing Taylor and PaintPals. From the start, Taylor stood out for his communication and customer service. Compared to the other contractors I quoted, he was far more transparent, informative, and easy to work with. I have oak cabinets, and because the estimate was done over the phone, Taylor initially promised a smooth, modern, grain-filled finish. After the project was completed, he explained that the oak itself made fully eliminating the grain much more difficult than expected. This is why he came back twice to try to improve the results. What really sets Taylor apart is how he handled it. The job was originally quoted at three days, but he canceled another project to extend mine to four. When we still weren’t fully satisfied, he honored his warranty and drove from Fontana on two separate weekends—once to remove and rework cabinet doors at his shop, and again to reinstall them. He also installed new cabinet handles in our upstairs bathroom as a goodwill gesture. Despite an unfortunate issue with his truck that forced all work to be done onsite, Taylor showed up around 7:30 a.m. and stayed past 5:00 p.m. each day without complaint. While the final finish wasn’t 100% what we originally envisioned due to the oak and logistical limitations, his effort, integrity, and follow-through were clear. Taylor takes pride in his work, is fairly priced, and truly cares about his customers. If you’ve worked with contractors before, he’ll be a breath of fresh air. Just be aware that oak cabinets present real challenges when it comes to achieving a perfectly smooth painted finish. Overall I do recommend PaintPals • Workmanship: 4/5 • Communication: 5/5 • Customer service: 5/5 • Knowledge and expertise: 5/5 • Integrity: 6/5"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who do you hire to paint cabinets?

A professional cabinet painter knows exactly what to do to give your cabinets long-lasting color and appeal. Other painters may also specialize in cabinet painting. You can find a highly rated, professional cabinet painter near you by searching online. Look at their online reviews and ratings from customers, as well as photos of recently painted cabinets that showcase the pro’s work.

What does it cost to have kitchen cabinets painted?

The average cost to have your kitchen cabinets painted by a professional ranges from $1,200 to $7,000. However, the layout of your cabinets can affect the complexity of the job and increase the cost. Your costs might also vary depending on how many kitchen cabinets need to be painted. And, some cabinet painters may charge extra if they have to remove the doors to paint them.

Contact a few cabinet painters in your area to get a better idea of how much it will cost to paint your kitchen cabinets. Also, read the cost guide for kitchen cabinet painting to learn more about how prices are determined.

What's the most durable paint for kitchen cabinets?

The most durable type of paint for kitchen cabinets is anything that’s smooth and easy to clean. It’s often recommended that you choose semi-gloss, gloss or satin finishes as opposed to matte finishes. Matte finishes have a non-uniform surface, which not only attracts dust and grease, but also makes it more vulnerable to damage during wipe downs.

Don’t hesitate to ask a top-rated cabinet painter for their advice as you’re planning your project.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace kitchen cabinets?

This depends on your project. Although painting kitchen cabinets is usually significantly cheaper than replacing them, it’s important to look at long-term costs vs. benefits. If your cabinets are damaged from water leaks, mold or warping and can no longer open or close properly, painting them is probably not the best option. You may spend less, but if you have to replace them in the next few years, you will wind up paying far more for having painted them.
