Amin was reliable and conscientious in his communication and arrival. He did a number of projects, including patching plaster and replacing baseboards, fixing closet doors and a french door that was not closing. He was less successful with replacing dimmer switches in the kitchen but the handyman that subsequently replaced them explained that they were tricky as the original electrician that installed them did not properly identify the hot wire. Communication was tough at times but overall, Amin did a good job.

Andres did a excellent job for a great price. Got several quotes and his was almost the lowest. Showed up when he said he would. The tree was intertwined with power and telephone wires and he managed it without breaking anything. Cut it all down, hauled it away, ground up the stump. Excellent cleanup. Everything left tidier than it was. Couldn't ask for a better job. Thank you Andres.

He converted a stove hood hard wire into an outlet box installed in the cabinetry above for my over-the-range microwave. There were a couple obstacles he got around smoothly such as too short of a wire and a tiled backsplash all the way up to the cabinetry. He was able to save me money by enabling me to return my spool of wire to the store unused. Prompt, fast, efficient guru. He gets my recommendation!

I needed a couple of very small things done in my bathrooms (caulking mostly). Our appointment was set for 2:30-3:30. I received a message at 2PM that another job had an emergency so they wouldn't be able to get to my place until evening or the next day. I explained that I had a kind of hard deadline due to an inspection I had coming up the next morning and he worked it out so he was able to come over and take care of my project around 3:30, so not so late after all. He's a nice guy and did the work quickly. The only thing that stood out as odd was that the rate Thumbtack initially said he'd charge was $59/hour plus materials. He quoted me, by text, $145 and I ended up paying $135 for about 15 minutes of work, so that was a bit of a surprise but I was in a bind so was happy to just get my issues taken care of regardless of the price. I don't understand the disparity in the rate advertised and what I was charged, but again, I was just glad to have the work completed.

Oscar just came out this last weekend to replace an old, falling down chain link fence. He put up a new, taller fence and added a cement footer. It looks awesome! Made our back yard look so much better, and even added some smooth 9-guage wire to the top to help with our coyote problems! He was very upfront about everything, professional and communicated very well. I will definitely be recommending Oscar and his crew to anyone who has a need for a new fence!

Hector was awesome! I highly recommend him. His quotes cant be beat. He is very professional and knows what he is doing. I had him install some electric in the attic for a Quiet Cool whole house fan and he also installed a high/low control panel and a timer switch for the fan. Also installed a new 220 line from my breaker for a new ductless mini split AC system. Very quality work, nice and tidy and hides all the wires.

Kevin Ghazarians worked on a clothing store project for me in July of 2011. Kevin designed and constructed creative fixtures from start to finish using natural tree sections for one design and steel electrical materials for another design. Both designs exceeded my expectations. I will definitely use Kevin for future construction and architectual design projects. I recommend the same for others. Kevin is an honest and fare man with high integrity. I also appreciate that Kevin cleans up any mess made, leaving things as clean as they were before.

Bruce repaired a torn down closet wire closet shelf. He responded promptly on a Sunday morning and was able to come by the next day. Even when one original anchor went missing, he came up with a workaround using his materials. Thank you! Excellent service.

Adrian team trimmed over 18 ficus trees, they were able to do it all in one day with not issues, they cleaned up tightly and had no issues cutting around the electric wires. Adrian was friendly and came by to quote the job, he was organized and detailed outlining what will be done and how long it will take. I felt like his price was very fair and he was an honest person. I am looking forward to working with Adrian and his team on regular maintenance for gardening and tree trimming. Plus Adrian trimmed a large palm tree for a bonus and now the entire neighborhood loves how it was cut. Great work!

Maria did a complete rewiring on our home, including the addition of lighting, wiring for new HVAC unit, installed flooring, painting (interior and exterior), walled up a window, and many small miscellaneous jobs. She was VERY easy to work with, accommodating, and professional. She does beautiful work at a reasonable price. She was very responsible and reliable, to the point that she became my de facto general contractor. Hire her. You won't be disappointed. We have plans for using her on some other projects soon!

I needed a lot of work done around my house and I called several companies to inquire about costs. I discovered they were all high for the repair work I needed. I have known Danny for several years and normally he is busy with projects but this time I was able to catch him as he was finishing one. I had Danny paint my bathroom and repair water damage from a leaky roof, I had him repair and coat. He also fixed a whole in my wall that once held an in wall air conditioner. He did the work in a timely manner and for about half the cost the construction companies wanted to charge me. Hopefully he will be available when I need my future projects completed.

Nick was really flexible with my schedule as well as very understanding when I had to cancel the first appointment. But more importantly, Nick was ethical and honest with his pricing. Nick didn't try to gouge me on the price but gave me a reasonable deal for the job he completed. Other estimates I received from contractors on here were double and in some cases tripple the amount Nick charged me. Based on Nick's honesty and the quality of his work, I would definitely hire him in the future for more project I have around the house.

Everything went well with Sam at ONBOARD.IT.TECH. He responded very quickly and got me an appointment within two days. It took just a couple hours to install my home theater set up, and he made sure it was perfect before he left, testing every part of the projector, and making sure the cables were hidden properly and nicely. I would recommend him to anyone!

I called Bill for repair of about 200 square feet of my roof: it started leaking on Mothers Day. We were desperate and called a half dozen places: he was the only guy to answer and to our surprise he came the same day to fix it. And his prices were cheap. Besides the convenience he provided, it was important to is that he is fully licensed, bonded and insured. Equally, he and his assistant Gordon perform all of the work- this way you know that you are going to get predictable results At the end of the roof project, we began to talk and I found out that he is a fully licensed contractor: we were waiting to renovate our front vanity bathroom and laundry: most contractors were very expensive and unpredictable because I had no idea who would do the worm. To my surprise, Gordon demoed the vanity, old tile and a connecting wall between the bathroom and laundry: They put in new drywall, new porcelain tile, re-routed electrical wires, put in a new 240v outlet and changed out the old copper tubes for the washer into new ones!!! The post is one winded but I really wanted to fully articulate our experience. Their fee was very competitive with the other rates we were quoted I fully recommend Bill and his assistant Gordon with the highest rating without reservations

We hired Claudio to accomplish two projects; first a water line hookup for your new refrigerator and then replacing existing wall switches with fancy new INSTEON home automation switches. Installing the new water line was the easy task and went very quick, the switches on the other hand were a little trickier. He worked through a bunch of technical challenges & trying to troubleshoot our houses weird wiring like a pro. All in all, he was very personable & we would definitely hire him again, if only for his reasonable flat rate or hourly handyman rate schedule.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
