How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Do electricians offer remote or virtual services?

While electrical work is typically performed in person, you may come across some electrician profiles that state the pro is offering remote services. If you do, contact local electricians to discuss your particular project and what type of remote services they may offer.

A light in my kitchen blinks and makes weird noise when it is turned on. The replacement of light bulb didn't solve the problem. So I contacted this company and hope a professional electrician can help. The company responded my request and dispatched an electrician on time. Even though in the request I have specifically indicated that replacement of light bulb didn't help, the electrician insisted it is light bulb problem. Then I replaced the light bulb again the same day and the problem persists. Contacted the company to ask the electrician to provide more details but the electrician didn't get back. The company waived the dispatch fee. The customer service team is good but the technical team needs to provide better service.

Ed has been amazing throughout the process. He has incredible attention to detail, meaning that he makes his installations neat and with consideration to aesthetics. He also makes insightful suggestions that cost little but add big value. I won’t call any other electrician from now on, Ed is our guy!

Poor experience. Came out two seperate times, couldn't resolve the issue and then abandoned the job. He took a week between visits, $700 and pissed off tenants.. I called another electrician who promptly fixed the issue for $250. Nice enough guy, but seemed like the job was over his head. You NEVER abandon your client and job. I certainly would never utilize their services again.

Arrogant and sloppy work. Numerous jobs items left uncompleted. Left a debris and trash where ever he worked. Little trail of wire, plaster scraps, wrappers, packaging etc in every room. This was a clean empty rental property which was being shown. I instructed him not leave anything behind in a vacant rental house. So that being said he through all his trash in the kitchen Some items he supposedly repaired are still not working. When I asked him about the work he immediate became defensive and denied everything. He never offered to return and finish the job and make it right. Had to hire another electrician to come back in and finish repairs and complete the job. Took the money and ran! Dont use this guy!

Milton was amazing! Unlike every other electrician I contacted, he quoted me the MAX price it would cost to fix the problem (comparable to what many charged for the service call alone) and said he could probably get it done for cheaper. He came out the SAME NIGHT within 40 minutes of me contacting him, even though I said the next morning was ok too. He was punctual, professional (he had to wait for me to let him in since I was rushing home), had the problem fixed within 20 minutes, and my final charge was less than what he quoted. Best find ever. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Definitely putting Milton on speed dial if any future electrical issues come up!!

Frank is a very professional electrician (and a nice person!). He understood that I wanted to keep my light fixture, was very careful to not break it. In addition he was open to taking it to a place that could help with special tools. He took It, got it fixed and brought it back promptly. He seems flexible and open. In addition, Frank goes above and beyond. He cleaned the light fixture, cleaned another light for me which requires a tall ladder and looked at some other household items. When truly took me by surprise about Frank is that he is not greedy - he doesn't do it for the money but you can tell he genuinely likes helping people. In fact, since I asked him to do one more thing in the house (plate for light switch) which we could not obtain and get done immediately, he said that he would just pick up his check when everything was completed! You don't see that very often. I hope you will use Frank - I highly recommend him - such people are hard to come by!
