Pete was wonderful with my very skid dish dog. Pete is very patient and calm a Pete was wonderful with my very skiddish dog. Pete is extremely patient, calm and encouraging, and was able to give Georgy a feeling of confidence. He is now walking better with me and not as hypervigilant. Pete gave me me great tools.

Marina has become an extension of our family, taking in our shy dog Ralphie and helping him feel comfortable and calm in her house. She takes Ralphie on playful walks, makes sure he is taken care of (treats?!), and is a gem to communicate with. We're so grateful to have connected on Thumbtack!

Shana was great! Texted every day to let us know how walks went. She had to deal with construction going on at the house and we were very grateful to have her taking the dogs out each day.

Kevin impressed us with his willingness to work around our schedules and to patiently manage our young rescue dog. Our dog reacted to him better than others we interviewed so, in a sense, she chose Kevin. His rates are very competitive too. We hope this is the beginning of a long and successful relationship!

Jackie gave dog training lessons to our 4 year old boxer which we just got from the Boxer Rescue Assoc. We were totally impressed with everything she did. Her training was excellent and even after a few sessions we saw a significant difference in our dog. Would highly recommend Jackie, she even helped get our cat and dog to be happy together in the same room, something we thought would never happen!

Erika is absolutely amazing with my senior golden retriever. Hope loves Erika because she is loving, cautious and very observant of my dog's needs. I am very picky about who I allow to walk my dog due to her health concerns. Erika takes her time and makes sure that all of Hope's needs are taking care of including change of water, and cleaning up any of Hope's "you know what" on our patio. I cannot recommend this young lady enough. Her gracious and calm personality make her highly valuable. She is absolutely dependable and listens to all of the directives I gave her about Hope. Hire her, and do not let her get away, you will not be sorry.

Angela is a fun, quirky lady who really cares about your pup. My little pupper, Rufus, needed a haircut badly, but I could not get an appointment this week or drop him off to his regular groomer in the Fillmore next week. Angela made a house call yesterday and lugged all her gear to my apartment to give my dog a bath and haircut. I offered to help her since she went out of her way and didn’t have her regular assistant with her (also, it would have taken forever!) and let me tell you, if “assistant” grooming is that hard I can only imagine how exhausting the actual grooming is! With me helping her it took a little over 2 hours and it’s not like she took breaks or dragged anything on – my dog, a 22 pound Shih-Poo - took about 2 hours and 25 minutes for: nails, ears, glands, bathing, blow drying and a haircut. She really gets in there and makes sure the paws are on point. She is meticulous in her method and takes the time to assess what the best course of action is for your dog’s haircut. She switches blades often, making sure that she can get rid of matted fur without compromising your dog’s look or safety. Angela was super caring with Rufus, much like how I act with him. I would definitely recommend her skills!

We recently had the pleasure of contracting with Your Best Friend Pet Services to care for our dog and cat while we visited family in Southern California. The owner, Holly Pardel, was professional and friendly throughout. She scheduled a time at our convenience to come to our house to meet with us and our pets, Roxie and Roscoe. She allowed us to explain exactly the care needed for each animal. Her warmth and attention to detail immediately put both myself and my wife at ease and allowed us to leave for our trip confident that our "kids" were in very good hands. Holly came to our house twice a day. Her visits included feeding, administering medications to our lab, Roxie, as well as taking her for walks around the neighborhood. She sent numerous photos and videos of Roxie at play which again served to reassure us that all was well at home. She also took in the mail for us, and even fed our goldfish, Sunkist! Upon our return home after nearly a week's absence, we found our pets healthy and happy. Her rates are extremely reasonable for the services provided (much less than if we had boarded them). I can recommend without reservation Holly Pardel for all of your dog walking and pet sitting needs. Thanks again Holly!

Lane has been walking my dog everyday for 2 years and pet sitting her about once a month at his home. I am beyond satisfied with the service. He cares about my dog, has helped significantly with training and socialization, and is more than accommodating to my schedule--all while keeping costs low. I can't imagine using anyone else. I especially love the daily Facebook photos and gps tracking of the group walks. I know he genuinely loves dogs and his job. Can't recommend him enough.

Gail has been walking our dog Val for about 6-7 months now and she is fantastic! I can't say enough about Gail's attentiveness, reliability, and great communication. We have had previous dog walkers an Gail is by far the best. She frequently sends pictures or videos of the day's walk, which is really thoughtful. She is also very flexible and works with us and our schedule. We originally had Gail come a few days a week, but we are so happy she now comes Monday through Friday. It's clear she really cares about the dogs she works with and wants to make sure they're happy. If you're looking for a reliable, trustworthy, and thoughtful dog walker, contact Gail!

Adam has been walking my dog for only a short time but so far the experience has been very good. My dog is wary of strangers but she warmed up to Adam IMMEDIATELY which was a great sign! Adam came over to meet my dog and go for a trial run walk. Everything went great. I highly recommend Adam!

Kaellyn is an incredible dog walker! She's prompt, professional, and clearly loves all of the animals she works with. My dog absolutely LOVES her and comes homes each day exhausted from ball playing and fun group excursions through some of the best parks and trails the East Bay has to offer. I would highly recommend Kaelynn to anyone looking for a dog walker who will treat your lil' pup with the up most of care.

Adam was amazing with our dog Ella, both when he house sat for us and when he walks her from time to time. When Adam comes to the door Ella immediately is over the moon excited and knows exactly where to go and sit after she is done saying hello.... yes you got it, next to his car so she can go for a ride and a hike. Adam also surprised me when I got home by having the sheets from the bed he slept in while he was house sitting all washed, folded and sitting on the end of the bed. What a delight not to need to clean up after a house sitter. I give Adam "4 Paws Up"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.
