I would highly suggest Michael Davidson as a tutor. I am 43 years old and had been out of school for quite a while, but because of the tutoring I got from Michael, I passed my math GED test with flying colors! He is very knowledgeable, helps you to figure out which areas that you need to focus on the most and explained different ways of how to handle the math problems. He also provided positive inspiration to help me get through the toughest of math problems and cheered me on to the end! Thank you again for everything, Michael!

This past summer, I was in search of a tutor to assist my brother with his preparation for the ACT. A number of conversations with local tutors proved fruitless, as they were either too expensive or had rigid schedules. After doing some research online, I came across Joyee’s profile on Wyzant. I was particularly impressed by his extensive background in ACT tutoring having worked for some well-regarded test preparation companies. In addition, his rates were extremely fair. I enlisted Joyee’s tutoring services via skype, and my experience was remarkable. In spite of the three hour time difference between the east coast and west coast, Joyee remained a consummate professional with regard to his scheduling and punctuality. Most importantly, he is fully invested in his students, demonstrating patience and understanding whilst pushing them to achieve their full potential. Prior to working with Joyee, my brother had an initial diagnostic score of 27. After six weeks of tutoring with Joyee my brother scored a 35 on the September 2015 ACT. I highly recommend Joyee, his tutoring services are the perfect complement for any motivated high school student seeking help with test preparation.

Ray has been such a positive and reliable tutor. He has created a relationship with my daughter that allows her to be comfortable, confident, and she actually enjoys her tutoring time. He is always patient and encouraging. Her testing has improved significantly. We plan to have "Mr.Ray" around for a long time!

I have worked long and hard with Kenneth, my tutor from elite home tutoring. I originally thought working with a tutor while in college was foolish. I'm surrounded by people who I thought would be eager to help. Kenneth is a teacher who helps people like me in his free time. The difference is that Kenneth is more interested in my success than my classmates who are more interesryed in partying. Advanced calculus is difficult so I would say kens help is worth it.

Mr. Reid is a great tutor. He helped me get a better understanding on how to solve quadratic equations, completing the square and on exponential functions. I have scheduled to meet with him once a month for more tutoring.

My daughter had a “D” in AP Calculus when she started to work with Ahmed. He had to reteach foundational concepts and within 2 1/2 months she has a chance to earn an “A” for the semester. Ahmed is a patient, highly knowledgeable, effective teacher. I would wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor. We were so impressed with his results, we have him tutoring my younger daughter as well!

We were in need of a math tutor and 2 different friends recommended Kevin to us. A year later, we still use Kevin for our math/SAT/ACT needs. Over the past year, I've noticed there are multiple clients that are loyal to Kevin. He's very knowledgeable in several areas and truly cares about his students' success. His rates are very reasonable. We've used other "professionals" in the past, but Kevin has been the only one to actually assist our daughter. She actually enjoys math now. I never thought I'd be able to say that. That alone is priceless.

Math is not my strong area, but with James excellent tutoring I made "A"s in all 4 classes! He is patient and explains everything clearly and directly and is flexible with tutoring times and locations! So glad to have had his help!

After already 5 months of tutoring, my daughter is already doing so much better in Reading & Writing. I never knew that tutoring could make such a big difference. Kami is very patient and flexible. She always answers our questions and text messages. Our previous tutor we found on thumbtack did not connect well to our daughter.

He is a really outstanding teacher. His patience always let me feel very related in his classes. Because I am a International student, and my teachers never used English to teach students before, sometimes I can be very nervous and confused in what teachers say in America classes. But Earl really gives me confidences, which make me believe I can overcome the difficulties I met in my study. Moreover, he really impresses me when he teaches me SAT writing, due to the reason that he separates long sentences for me and tells me which different functions of which different parts of them; this method is very useful for International students such as me. However, few teachers use this method to teach students when they cannot understand the meanings of the long and difficult sentences. Honestly, he did really give me lots of help.

    FLEX Tutoring

    About

FLEX Tutoring believes there is no "one size fits all" method for teaching. What works well for one student may not work at all for another. With that in mind, we use a three-pronged approach that is wholistic, flexible, and integrative for effective tutoring to get maximum results. WHOLISTIC Tutoring to Meet the Needs of Individuals By treating the student as a whole person, FLEX seeks to address the real sources of academic issues. While each student is different, FLEX tutors are trained to look for both inter-subject and intra-subject challenges. For example, a student having difficulty with math (intra-subject difficulties) may really be struggling with comprehending word problems (inter-subject difficulties involving both reading and math). FLEXIBLE Tutoring to Encourage Learning Styles FLEX Tutoring recognizes there are many different learning styles and that not all students learn well through auditory and visual methods (the two styles most commonly used in the classroom). Instead of rigidly adhering to a particular learning style or set of styles, FLEX tutors incorporate all learning styles into their instructional approach - from aural and visual, to verbal, physical, logical, social, and solitary. INTEGRATIVE Tutoring to Achieve Student Success FLEX Tutoring integrates a variety of life skills into each student's curriculum as part of our mission to foster personal growth. In addition to subject-specific content, FLEX tutors work with students to improve their study skills, note-taking techniques, time management, test-taking strategies, and stress management. These complementary skills prepare FLEX students for the challenges of modern life - from establishing work-life balance to efficiently managing the demands of higher education.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
