I hired Larro's Moving Services for a local move in SF. I can not say enough about how great the guys that came were. I used a crew of 3 men who were kind, helpful, careful and quick. They had a difficult task because my move involved several flights of stairs but they had a great attitude and were very careful with my delicate items. They came with everything that was needed - garment boxes, moving blankets, a truck, etc. The service provided was well worth the cost and I'd definitely use them again or recommend them for someone moving locally.

I hired Patrick to unload two small pods into his truck, transport it across the bay and unload it into our new place. He and his teammate got it done quickly and were pleasant to work with. They came fully equip with blankets and supplies. My only critiques are that his responses to my initial messages was pretty slow and would have liked to see them use those blankets/pads on few things that they didn't. Overall was a good experience. Would hire again for a local move.

Fresh Start Movers will make your moving day a breeze. My move was a local move and was completed in one day. It started with talking to the owner (Kyle) who scheduled the move. I had to make a date change and also asked questions about the pricing and details of the move, he was very helpful and courteous in all conversations that I had with him. During the move, James and his team were the best. They showed up on time and ready to go. They completed the move within the time frame indicated and moved everything with care and professional efficiency. Totally polite and every mover had a great attitude and appeared to enjoy their work. One of the movers sang to himself while working and his apparent cheerfulness is contagious. Overall, this is a great company and I will definitely recommend to all my friends who move.

The same day I posted my thumbtack ad for needing help to move a sewing table, Mike responded. He followed up, we agreed on a price and we set move time. He came today on time and got the job done. Excellent and reliable moving service!

We asked Sam to move a fairly large Cherrywood Entertainment Armoire. As an experienced cabinet maker he knew exactly how to dismantle the armoire into smaller move-able pieces and was able to work quickly and effectively to move it to its new location. I would definitely recommend him and will use him for future projects.

Nicolas was easy to work with, was not only on time, and was friendly. He and his other mover did a great job picking up furniture for me in another city, then brought it to me. They also helped me move furniture around after just moving in a week ago. I would definitely use them again.

This is the second time we have used Robb & Messer Moving and Storage for our move. They could not have been more friendly and helpful. We did our move in 2 days. The first day we had them come and pack up our kitchen. They did an excellent job wrapping up all of my breakable items and ensured they were delivered without anything breaking! Day 2 they packed up all of our furniture, clothing, etc. They are very efficient and capable or disassembling furniture so that it can fit through doorways or awkward hallways. Everyone we worked with did their job with a smile on their face and made the experience extremely enjoyable for my husband and I. They also helped us unpack everything. After moving twice in the same year I could not have made a better decision to hire Robb & Messer Moving and Storage again for my second move. It took a ton of the stress out of packing and moving. I think what sums up the experience is I asked Justin if I could do anything to be helpful and he told me "just sit back and relax" Who thought moving could have some relaxation time involved? I would recommend them to anyone!

I had a small moving project that needed to be coordinated like a Swiss watch movement: a very nice antique bookcase (that I just had refinished) and was transporting myself via a uhaul truck on a Friday morning to a destination some 70 miles away, had to be carefully unloaded and moved. More, I also had to get the displaced furniture moved to the garage (a small entertainment unit and small wooden book case) AND get capable people to do it with basically one day’s notice! The pressure was on! I literally posted my request on Thursday at 3:49 am (couldn’t sleep!). Elite Power Washing came to my rescue! They were the first to respond with a very reasonable quote, agreed to an 8:30 am appointment on Friday, and reassured me that they were up for the task. Mike and Juan arrived promptly, took direction on my suggestions on how to transport the piece (after I had watched how my furniture refinisher and his cohort had moved it), and placed it gently in the right spot. Mike and Juan are calm, courteous, considerate, and caring. They are professional, punctual, and take pride in what they do. I will definitely add them to my roster of professionals that I can count on, and will contact them for future jobs. I will assess my gutters and power washing needs as well... Happy and Relieved! I was moving out of state and very new to this. Planning all the moving details was so stressful until i contacted Robert. He was proffesional, responded to all my questions and showed up in good time for loading. They worked their magic and in two hours everything was in the truck - Sigh of relief. I was not present when he delivered my stuff on the other end. We had made arrangements for him to get keys. He left everything where it should be and assembled the heavy stuff - how nice. I was very pleased with Robert's proffesionalism and he gave us the most reasonable quote. I would definitely use Robert again. He is a man of few words but he gets the job done.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Seu was very helpful and efficient with cleaning up my backyard. My backyard had a lot of big furniture pieces and other items that needed to be dumped. He moved the items out quickly and even organized what was left in my backyard without me asking him. I would definitely recommend him!

Paul and Katelyn managed all of our requirements with timely responses and quality service, at a price far better than the other quotes we received. They even dealt with an unexpected snowstorm without missing their delivery time. We would highly recommend Paul and his company for any long distance move.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
