Charles is a very talented writer and worked already on a few internationally acclaimed projects, for the BBC and more recently for a world class Cuban opera. Another important skill, he translates very well written ideas into video concepts, he understands well both worlds. I worked with him on a few projects and I will sure use his talents again.

I did business with Lori after losing my job of 15 years, I needed to update and revamp my Resume along with creating a professional catchy cover letter. I was stuck with writers block and needed a jump start. I reached out to several resume writers and Lori is the one that had caring in her style and truly wanted to help. She made the whole process easy for me and not only helped me with my resume and cover letter she also gave me a pep talk that helped me get my mojo back. Lori is one of those persons that still exists that care about how and what she does. With her help I am back in business and options are opening up for me. I would rehire her in a second and if you need help writing a document or reviewing documents she is your person.

Alen Nye has repeatedly proven to be the best editor that I have ever had the privilege to work with. She has efficiently edited my work quickly and competently, despite numerous spelling and grammar errors spread over hundreds of pages. My work came back to me ahead of schedule and clean of errors. She has the amazing ability to work with both my artistic writing style and limited grammatical abilities, to find that middle ground where my artistic voice is at it‘s best. There is no other editor that I would prefer to work with and I greatly look forward to working with her in the future.

As a non-fiction, academic writer looking to widen my audience beyond content specialists in my field, I turned to Stacy very early on in my book project for her expertise as a developmental editor. From the start of our experience working together, she impressed me by her ability to ask thoughtful questions and offer strategic feedback on content, structure and style. Her suggestions helped me to refine my ideas and writing in a way that made my historical topic come to life and spark an exciting conversation with a wider audience than expected. Stacy is herself a veteran writer, writing teacher and editor, and she has developed innovative methods for helping writers from all different backgrounds and disciplines to develop their own authentic voice, without taking over. I especially appreciated her recommendations of specific writers and podcasts to inspire my own approach to my topic. I recommend beginning your work with Stacy early in the writing process, as in my case, she was able to offer critical feedback on each chapter in a generative fashion. Our ongoing relationship helped me to deepen the impact of my writing as the manuscript progressed from start to finish. --Paula B.

Shery Scott was tasked with assembling runbook documentation for a very large healthcare provider from miscellaneous documentation scattered through at least two large departments. With no context other than the words on the page, she was able to correctly organize the information at hand to begin to form a coherent tale of each of the assigned runbooks. When you think about this remember Shery never saw any of the products whose data she organized. I was delighted by her work, and her very non-nonsense approach to documentation. I suspect any competent manager would like to have Shery as a reliable team member.

Michael is an outstanding book editor. I've been working with him on my manuscript for the past two years. He excels in the intangibles, with terrific suggestions about improving a story's pace, character development and plot. So often when Michael suggests something, a lightbulb goes off in my head and I think: Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Beyond his uncanny ability to see where my story should be going, he also detects what's missing. This is a trait any writer wants to have in an editor--an ability to identify what needs to be added or expanded upon. Beyond his professional editing skills, Michael is consistently prompt and turns drafts around well within his promised timeframe. Michael is not only a great editor but he can, if needed, be a coach as well. He knows what his writers are going through, because he's a writer himself. He has been important to me in his coaching role, because he's helped me plow through the rough spots that are inevitable in completing something as complicated as a novel. He becomes a partner in getting the job done, and his words of encouragement and hope make all the difference.

I had a very good experience with Ralph Dranow as editor for my novel. He listened to my needs before he read the book and wrote a multi-page critique that I've found useful as I work on a second draft. It's also very apparent that he's well read. He worked quickly as well. Although my book isn't particularly large, 46K in words, Ralph's editing was complete in less than a week. I'd highly recommend Ralph for a writer with a finished manuscript who is looking for an editor to give feedback on strengths and weaknesses in the work.

Adena has been my go-to editor for over seven years. She has read essays, manuscripts, grant applications, job materials, and more and gives expert feedback in every genre. Her suggestions help to make my writing clearer and more elegant, and she delivers input respectfully, taking the time to understand what I am trying to say and helping me reach my goals without sacrificing complexity. She clearly communicates about her timeline and process and can be trusted completely with any deadline. Not only has she helped my writing but she has helped me grow as a writer; I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Tommy is such a great guy and talented writer. He was happy to meet in person at a Starbucks in SOMA. He gave me great advice about how to choose my field (I wasn’t’ so sure about my path at the time). He was so nice that he actually edited my grad school resume and personal statement which is a lot longer than a cover letter and the resume for grad school applications is not in a typical business format. And he did a wonderful job and the personal statement is now more touching as well as informational. He is also patient because he did 4 drafts for me! I’m confident I will get into my dream school with his help. Thank you Tommy!

Ellie Schamber mentored me through my graduate prerequisite courses in Psychology as well as my Ph.D. dissertation. She also edited many of my papers and the dissertation. Ellie is a very good writer, and she did an excellent job of both guiding me and editing the manuscript. The dissertation was approved and praised by the academic dean for its writing as well as the content. We are now collaborating on a book, and I am very pleased with her ability to understand abstract ideas and articulate them clearly. Ellie always came on time, over the period of several years, and provided me with the highest quality work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
