Prior to CJ replacing our fence, we contacted two other contractors. The first contractor never returned my call. The second contractor wanted to an additional two hundred dollars to the bid, after I asked if the bid included hauling. CJ replied to our inquiry within 12 hours. He gave us a written bid with in two days including a starting date. He communicated with us by text or phone throughout the project, which included him getting hurt and being unable to work. The following day he arrived with help and oversaw the project. In conclusion, we would use CJ again not just for the fencing but other construction work at our home. I would recommend him to other home owners. Cephus and Laura

I have a property and share fences with 5 different neighbors. We have replaced 4 and dream builders did the 5th. They are hands down the best builders we worked with. The price was excellent, the fence looks great, they knocked out the job in days, and went above and beyond fixing a few extra odds and ends. I'm going to use them for a bathroom model and even some landscaping work. I run a company with over 500 employees and I would hire these guys if they were bond traders versus builders. They are honest and have true character.

Mr Baroody was great, hired him to fix my door and then ended up hiring him to repair my fence. He did a great job on both projects, I was happy with results and would hire him again. Prompt and courteous service.

Todd did some major work to stabilize a very old barn on my property as well as quite a few smaller repairs on fences and other structures. It was a tough job and he put a great amount of planning and effort into the work with really outstanding results. I would highly recommend Ellis Construction to anyone needing handyman work and definitely will be calling them back for future projects.

He did a great job repairing our fence and offered several suggestions on how to reduce the overall cost (didn't try to up-sell us). We are very happy with how it turned out and the price was lower than expected.

Rick and Brent were friendly, professional and conscientious. As the job started, there were addtional factors that came up due to other contractors (plumbers, cabinet installers, etc) and these guys reprioritized, on the fly, to ensure all of the other contractors working on different phases of the remodel could keep moving on schedule! The only attitude I saw from them was a positive, let's figure out how to make it work, attitude! They helped reduce our stress levels as issues arose and we appreciate that. They were reasonably priced and I will not hesitate to hire them for additional work around our house! Thank you again!!

I had 8 sections of fence blown down by a recent storm. I needed the old fence removed and replaced. I got several estimates through Thumbtack. Dan's estimate was very reasonable and his company had done good work for my daughter, so I hired Dan to do the job. Dan's Construction showed up as scheduled and did good work. Next time I need fence work, I'll hire them again.

Bill and his crew were very professional and did a fantastic job on the fence in our backyard. We love it! Bill's quote came in a bit higher than some of the other quotes we received however he was very personable and easy to talk to. Very attentive and open to what we were looking for and a local to our area. Something my wife and I discuss frequently is supporting local business. He also came back out to remove some existing concrete on the side of our house at a very reasonable price. We will definitely hire WPS again for further improvements in and around our home. Thanks guys!!

I wish there was a higher rating to give to Devon and Joe for the two fences they replaced for us. They are, simply stated, amazing people to work with. From our first meeting Devon took the time to listen to what we wanted in a new fence. He worked with us as well as our two neighbors who shared in the consultation. Throughout the fence building process Devon stayed in daily contact via text messages about the status of the job, and I felt like I was working with a friend rather than someone we had hired. Devon is an artist and a perfectionist, and the end result is beyond our expectations. I have never worked with people who come to the job everyday with the positivity and professionalism that Devon and Joe have. Who doesn't want to work with guys who start your morning with a text stating, "It's a beautiful day to build a fence!" I would highly recommend D&J Fencing to anyone who needed a fence built. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the experience was.

I hired Richie to rid my front yard of badly overgrown weeds. Out of 6 people who responded to my request, Richie's pricing was most competitive. We set a time, 6/23/18 at 10:00 a.m., and true to form, Richie showed, ON TIME, ready to work. He restored my Front Yard to MINT condition! Although his quote included front yard only but he checked perimeter of home and pulled out any misc. weeds (there was a lot), including pulling out some unsightly ivy growing through my neighbor's fence onto my property. No extra charge. No hidden cost. He worked efficiently and was done with plenty of time for me to make plans for my Saturday. Very pleasant demeanor, which I appreciate (why people come across angry or rude when you're trying to PAY them money is beyond me). I recommend Richie for your lawn care project. You won't be disappointed.

I’ve had the SGC guys at my place on numerous occasions for my remodel projects. They did a great job fixing our fallen down fence, tiling my bathroom floor and rebuilding our sunroom. They were very professional and they cleaned up at the end of every work day. I was very pleased with quality of work. They were not the lowest quote that I had received but I have learned through my years of being a home owner that you get what you pay for. I will definitely be using them for all my future projects.

Stan and his crew were very professional and honest, we hired him to landscape our front yard and replace a retaining wall with new blocks. I have to say it looks amazing. He graded the ground properly so it drains well, all new sod and irrigation. Couldn’t be happier I will definitely hire him again in the future.

Larry Houck is a very talented contractor. He built a shed in my backyard for my kids to use as a fort and they love it, he did an amazing job, it even has a window. We have been using him for years. He has laid concrete, built a fence, and put up ceiling fans for us. I would highly recommend him and his crew.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
