Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

YCK Electric responded very quickly and was at our house the next day to install 2 sconces on our living room wall. We have an old house and it can sometimes be tricky, but he was able to expertly install the lights with minimal damage to the drywall. I checked with other electricians and YCK was a great value with excellent and safe (I appreciated the face mask!) service. I highly recommend and would not hesitate to call again.

Alex was a top notch professional from the very beginning. He quickly responded to my request and fit us into his schedule the following week. Because we're new homeowners, he went through every detail of the work that needed to be done and educated us on a bunch. Our house is older so he ran into unexpected issues during the work but didn't complain at all and got it all done! In 1.5 days, he moved major electrical work in our bathroom and installed 2 ceiling light fans, including running new lines from the wall switch to the ceiling electrical box so that we can have fancy dual switches! All in all, Alex did an amazing job at a great price and record time. We're so happy to have found our go-to electrician!

I originally hired Joseph to replace in-ceiling lighting fixtures in my kitchen. He responded quickly and offered a fair price. He and his team were out a couple days later, did the job quickly and cleaned up afterward. One of the lights did not function properly. Joseph got a replacement, but it did take several weeks for him to make it back out to install it. On a separate electrical job, he and his son, Matthew did an excellent job. I had three outlets in a bedroom that did not function. When he finished the light installation I asked him about the outlets. Joseph advised that that there was probably a loose or lost neutral connection on the circut line. I called First American, my home warranty company, and they sent Woo Brothers electrical to my home. Their electrician spent about 15 minutes looking at the outlets, then advised me that he would need to run a new neutral line to correct the problem and would need to cut some holes in the walls to do it. He further said my breaker box was at capacity and he'd let the warranty company know in case they'd cover what he estimated to be about a $6500 breaker box replacement project. All First American saw in his job estimate was that the "breaker box" was at capacity and didn't read any further. They refused to approve replacing the neutral line because the warranty doesn't cover breaker box work. I asked Joseph to take a look at it, and as he suspected, the neutral connection had come off on another one of the outlets along the same circut as the bedroom outlets. The loose neutral was found by his son Matthew on an outlet in the kitchen. The Woo Brothers electrician didn't even consider checking other outlets on the circut. The job took about 40 minutes. Joseph quoted a price of $165. I paid him $200 and it was worth it. I would hire Joseph again for electrical work!
