Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a cheap DJ?

To find a cheap or affordable DJ for your party or wedding, search for local DJs near you and ask for free cost estimates from several of them. While some DJ profiles may provide an automatically generated starting cost, it’s important to contact the DJ to get an idea of how much your particular request will cost. This also gives you the opportunity to ask them other important questions and make sure you are a good fit.

How do you book a DJ for a party?

To book a party DJ, start by comparing local pros in your area. Check out their ratings and reviews to find out:

  • Are they professional?
  • Do they show up on time to set up for the party?
  • Do they know how to feel the energy in the room and adjust the music accordingly?
  • Are they friendly to guests and take song requests?
  • Do they specialize in the genres you want (pop, Top 40, hip-hop, etc.)?
  • Do they have experience playing at your type of event (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)?

Whenever possible, watch videos of their performances.

Your last step is to contact three to five different DJs near you to ask them questions and get price quotes.

How much is a DJ?

When you hire a local DJ, expect to pay roughly between $300 and $800. But be aware that the actual price will vary based on several factors, including the length of the DJ’s set and how much of a presence they need to be. Larger venues can drive up the cost, as this requires more equipment, soundchecking and setup. Adding extras like confetti, fog, light shows and black lights also adds to the cost.

How much are wedding DJs?

Hiring a DJ typically costs anywhere from $300 to $1,200. It all depends on how long they’ll be working at your wedding and other various factors. The cost to hire a wedding DJ is usually higher than the cost to hire a DJ to play at a birthday party or similar event.

To find out exactly how much your wedding DJ will cost, ask for a cost estimate from several professionals in your area.

What questions should you ask wedding DJs?

To ensure you hire the best DJ for your wedding, ask these questions:

  • Are you available on my wedding date?
  • How much do you charge, and how do you set your prices?
  • What’s included in your rate (e.g., set up, clean up, etc.)?
  • How many weddings have you played at?
  • Do you have any references I can contact?
  • What kind of music do you specialize in?
  • Do you provide your own equipment, sound system, speakers, etc.?
  • Do you provide any other services (e.g., photo booth, lighting, etc.)?
  • Can guests request songs?
  • Will you accept a “Do Not Play” list?
  • How early would you arrive at the venue to set up?
  • Do you take breaks throughout the event? If so, how many and for how long?

Why do DJs ask how many guests are at the wedding?

It’s helpful to let your DJ know how many guests will be attending the wedding so they can ensure they have the right sound system and equipment. They may also ask more questions about your guests so they can ensure they have music that caters to the crowd.

Oscar was the best DJ a couple could ever ask for ! He knew what songs to play to get everyone up and dancing and keep people dancing. We were so nervous about song selections and genres but Oscar made our wedding such a hit. He took the stress off of our backs for sure. I'm so grateful to have found such a down to earth DJ for our wedding. Look no further for a DJ , 10/10 would recommend !

First of all, thank you for taking my event in such short notice. Dj Ricardo was awesome. My regret was we didn't have a lot of time for the dancing part. My guests could have danced till 2 am. But with time restrictions, my guests really did have a good time. I will definitely recommend you guys again for any upcoming event.

Erik was the perfect choice for our wedding ceremony/reception. He was more than just a DJ. He helped coordinate and made sure everything went as scheduled. Our ceremony started at 5:30 and the reception ended at 11pm. He was very prompt, already set up and ready to go. He was able to read what our guests wanted to hear. We were worried nobody was going to dance. Boy were we wrong! Erik did a wonderful job and I would recommend him to everyone. It was a pleasure!!

Me Erik Redmond is a true professional in his field. Out of all the vendors I hired for my wedding he was the best. He gave me no stress, and made picking a dj the easiest thing to do for my wedding. My wife and I gave him ideas of what type of music we liked and he did all the rest. We got nothing but complements from our guests at our wedding about him. Planning an event is very stressful and it is hard to know who to hire. So take my advice and hire Mr Erik Redmond for your music needs and you will be very pleased!

I hired Chris about 5 months in advance of my wedding. I spent the next 4 months attempting to discuss details with him and getting very little response if any. He kept putting me off saying he'll start working on details right before the wedding. So at approx. a month before the wedding I tried to contact him. He didn't get in contact with me until 18 days before the wedding, and he had my wedding information mixed with someone else's. He finally got his information straightened out and called back and everything sounded good - I was finally starting to feel a little better about my DJ decision. We had a couple changes a week before the wedding, so I emailed Chris and he responded saying the changes had been noted and taken care, no worries. The big day finally arrives, and the ceremony goes smoothly - no problems. We get to the reception and our entrance went great - he hyped the crowd before we came in, the song was right, our last name was pronounced correctly, and then he announces it's time for the first dance. (One of the changes the week before that he acknowledged was the change of songs for the first dance.) He played the wrong song, so we stopped and went to talk to him and he didn't even have the song we wanted - even though it had always been on our "Must Play" list of songs. So we made do with something he had and moved on. My husband and I enjoyed ourselves and then the next day while recapping with family and friends we realized that we really didn't hear many of the songs from our music request list, and almost none for the list of songs our guests requested. The more we've thought about it, the more upset we've gotten regarding the DJ. I hope this is just a fluke, but I couldn't in good conscience leave a positive review when we are so very unhappy with our vendor choice. This was the one regret I have about my wedding day - the one flaw.
