Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

We hired Erin to choreograph and teach a first dance for our reception. I knew I wanted a choreographer because I was very nervous to go in front of a crowd and dance without having a plan, so I began the search for a choreographer. What initially hooked me into booking Erin was her responsiveness and willingness to help. Throughout our three sessions together she continued to be responsive to our needs and would ask us if we were comfortable with the moves she was teaching us. Erin also was very communicative. She was easy to get a hold of and would send us reminders for our lessons. This helped a ton, especially with all the things that were piling up on our plates. Along with that, she was flexible and open. She made us feel comfortable, especially since my fiancée and I have no formal dance training. The dance turned out wonderfully and it was a big hit at the reception! So many of our guests gave compliments and were so impressed with it. If anyone wants to choreograph their dance, feel comfortable, and learn at ton while doing it, Erin is a great choice!

Jessica is super encouraging, understanding, and enthusiastic about what she does. I have always wanted to learn how to dance; however, my biggest barrier is my fear to just let loose. Jessica is super patient with me. She teaches me new moves and provides the space to try them out. I'm still in the process of getting over my fear but with each lesson, I feel myself feeling a little more confident than the lesson before. Jessica definitely does a good job of pushing me to get better without making me feel uncomfortable.
