Abraham was great. I needed to get some bathroom faucets replaced. He gave me a competitive quote, was punctual, knowledgeable and got the job done in time and I'm very happy with his work. I'll definitely consider him in the future for any plumbing needs.

I help manage 70+ properties at Now Realty Group and have had a lot of bad experiences with hiring Electricians. I'm happy to say that I had a wonderful experience working with Jose! He got out to my electrical job within 24 hours of my contacting him and he arranged the appointment directly with the tenant so I didn't have to be the middle man, saving me a lot of time. After going out to our rental property and assessing the problem and finding that the electrical outlet he went out to change out was working fine, he said there would be no charge! No one does that anymore, I was very impressed! I have found Jose to be very professional, prompt and honest. I will be using him for all of my electrical, plumbing, painting & drywall jobs from here on out. Jose went above and beyond my expectations and I would highly recommend him.

Dave and his partner Zack recently completed a bathroom remodel for me. The job included new porcelain tile for the floors and the shower surrounds. They were both very professional showing up on time every day and putting in a full days work with only a short break for lunch. The quality of work was awesome and the job was completed on time. Friendly guys who know what they’re doing. I’m using them again for another bathroom remodel.

I recently purchased a home and needed several jobs done, ranging from simple to complex. I needed shelves put up in the laundry room, a new mailbox, rafters in the garage, bathroom shower installed, doorbells on both front and back doors, screen door for the patio, hanging (and leveling!) wall decorations, outside wooden fence general maintenance, and more! Once the weather breaks they are to come back and assemble a gas grill, fix a downspout, fix an outside light, and other jobs I have for them. They are professional, neat, very affordable. I have and will recommend them very highly! In the meantime, I will be adding to my list of things I need done!

Mohammad is a genuine, hard working man. His work is amazing! He literally puts his sweat and tears into his job. We had hardwood floors that wanted replacing, and he worked day in and day out to remove those stubborn (and I mean stubborn!) floors out. I don’t know how he did it in the short amount of time. He’s kind, knowledgeable, personable, accommodating and all around nice guy. He listens to your concerns/wishes and gives good feedback. He has a great team he works with too. They were all great! We love our floors so much, we asked him to remodel/fix our fireplace, and remodel our master bathroom (In process, will post pics of everything when finished 🤗) Can’t wait to see the finish product our newly remodeled home ❤️💕!

Marathon is the only company I trust to work on my 2 homes. They remodeled my out dated 3 bed/1 bath house and turned it into a beautiful and spacious 3 bed/2 bath. They up graded my galley kitchen and turned it into a gorgeous and spacious open kitchen. They added a much needed bathroom, turned my very small living room into a great room, gave me functional closets, extra storage space and got rid of that unsightly popcorn ceiling. Isaac worked with me hand-in-hand from start to finish and insured I was happy with the progress on my house. He did excellent work from design, to demolition, to rebuilding. He did everything from plumbing, electrical, windows/doors, drywall, flooring, paint (indoors and out), fixtures.....and more. Marathon completed the remodel on time, went above and beyond, and did it at a very good price. It is rare to find an honest, trust worthy, company that takes pride in their work. Well, Marathon is it and I couldn't have asked for a better contractor. Thank you Marathon!

Where do I even start with Freedom Renovation. They have such a large showroom with many different cabinet styles and countertops displaying their quality work. Their showroom looks like something out of a magazine. Upon first impression I could not believe that everything that was done in the showroom was done by their exceptional staff. After a few weeks of discussing my planned kitchen remodel with the project manager Allen, my wife and I decided to hire Freedom Renovation. When we had signed we were told that the remodel would take about a month and a half, much to our surprise they were done in just a little over three weeks. I know I made the right choice in choosing freedom because my new kitchen looks better than anything I could've ever imagined. All of the staff was nice, friendly, courteous and excelled in customer service. I had heard some horror stories from my friends about other contractors and honestly was scared to have my kitchen remodeled. Throughout the entire remodel they kept me informed and up-to-date as to the entire progress of my kitchen. I always felt that Freedom Renovation had my best interest at heart. If you are looking for a bathroom or kitchen remodel or new floors installed I highly recommend them. The quality of the work they provide is unparalleled. My wife and I are already planning our bathroom remodel with them. Thank you Allen and your team you have made our dream kitchen come true.

I am very happy with the work Joe's Tile Pros did on my bathroom remodel. Although it was a small space, it was full of challenges including working with glass blocks, niches, and leveling walls. His crew came to work early and put in full days until the job was finished. They really aimed to please. I'm having my kitchen re-tiled soon, and I will definitely be using Joe's Tile Pros.

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

Juan one-handedly remodeled on of my bathroom floor and vanity. He was courteous, diligent, and very personable. He wanted to ensure I was satisfied every step of the remodel. If I were to remodel again and want true workmanship than Juan is your man. Thank you for turning my 1970's bathroom to a modern, hotel-like. For sure this is our "guest bathroom" with all the amenities. Juan was also willing to take on a very hard vinyl fence replacement, basically correcting a mistake and accomplished a pretty hard goal. I look forward to working with him again and recommend him 100%.

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
