Just had a great experience with Dan of SDAC. He's a really good guy who not only diagnosed my issues, but he also educated me on my AC unit. SDAC is very reasonable and I will definitely be using this company for all of my heating and cooling needs. Thanks again Dan!

I manage a 40 unit apartment complex in Little Italy, San Diego and use Keith Murphy for all of our AC, Heating, and Ventilation needs/issues. Keith always responds right away to our calls and is on site immediately. He is very knowledgeable, professional, and does great work. His prices are also very fair. We love working with him.

I was in a complete bind and needed my mini-split AC/Heat Pump installed ASAP. DC/AC contacted me within minutes after putting out the request through Thumbtack. Don (my contact) said he is committed to having the installation done the next day. An hour after talking with Don he sent one of his techs (Matt) over to evaluate. Matt, an outstanding and very knowledgeable professional told me what needed to be done, how long it would take, and an approximate cost. I received the final quote a few hours later and accepted it. The next day the crew arrived early and finished the job by mid-afternoon. We were thrilled how smooth the process went. I strongly recommend DC/AC for all Air and Heating work.

I collected 5 estimates before having Corey install my new furnace & AC systems. His estimate was the best. In addition, Corey returned phone calls, showed up when he said he would, completed the job when he said he would, did a very nice installation job, and cleaned up after himself once he was done. I am very fussy about who I hire, especially for large jobs. I was 100% satisfied with Corey and his commitment to doing the job right. I highly recommend this company. I know he will be there if anything needs fixing in the future.

Needed estimate on new HVAC Heating and air conditioning installation. The owner asked me several questions about the house and what kind of system i was looking for, he said since we live in Carlsbad that we don't need a very high efficiency ac and heating system since its only cold or hot about 2 months out of the year. We were so confused about what type and what efficiency to get. He put our mind at ease and saved us about $2,500.00. Going with a high efficiency system will never had made any sense since we don't use it that much. The the owner is not a salesman otherwise he would have sold us on high end ac system which we don't know. Logic and sense made our decision easy. Thanks!

We are SO happy we went with Right Choice instead of a well known company in San Diego. We thought the $65.00 cost for an a/c check was to good to be true. We were wrong. The receptionist, the schedulers, and Steve ( the tech that came to our home). Steve spoke to my husband about ways to reduce our bill. We highly recommend this company. They did what they said they would do. We will call them in the winter for a furnace check. Thank you Right Choice!

Air Plus Heating, Cooling, & Solar was the third of three bids I solicited to replace the c. 1980s furnace in our rental property. Rhonda Mayes, the scheduling coordinator (my description) was very quick about setting a convenient meet with Danny (to do the initial survey so as to create the materials list). As it turned out, Air Plus's bid turned out to be the lowest with an all-inclusive pricing in order to avoid any confusion. Offering to pay in cash, I even got a discount that could offset at least some of the sales tax. The installation was scheduled the following week. Andrew and Ed arrived on time the day of the installation. They were very efficient and very quick, even finishing a bit earlier than scheduled. By the time I arrived, they were almost done cleaning up and have already instructed my tenants as to the furnace's proper operation. It was great doing business with Air Plus as they used Trane products (while I'm no HVAC expert I do know the reputation of Trane products), they are friendly and easy to work with from Rhonda to Dan and to Andrew and Ed. And they were all very knowledgeable, from the contracting aspect to the technical aspect. Overall a great company to do business with!!

When our heating and a/c system was installed 4 years ago, it was not done right. Tarpy came to the rescue by diagnosing and re-configuring the system. Their employees are courteous and conscientious. I can highly recommend them.

Based on our SDG&E bills, it was apparent that the original HVAC system in our house built in 1985 needed an upgrade for cost savings and because the unit made so much noise inside and outside of the house. We decided to explore and cost out this project through our local Costco which referred us to Action Air (AC, Heating and Cooling). Action Air also received a positive reference from two of my coworkers who are very particular about any type of contractor doing work on their house. From the original quote through project completion, Merrill from Action Air was very complete and customer service focused. Without any money committed, Merrill took the time with both my wife and I after 6:00 PM during the week to explain his inspection of the current system (outside fan unit, furnace, and ducting in the attic), along with reviewing our SDG&E bills with us which I never really understood till he explained all the line items in the bill. He was very gracious in dealing with the noise from my 2 and 3 year old daughters during the appointment. Merrill also gave some background about his history with Action Air and other stuff about Action Air's company history. Lastly, during the initial quote appointment, he thoroughly explained our payment options. Based on the time and care he took to ensure my wife and I had all the information regarding the options and features for each of the hardware components of the HVAC system, we decided to go with Action Air because of Merrill. He also answered many other questions regarding project options, too. Then, from scheduling of the project completion it was clear that we made the right choice in selecting Action Air. The scheduler worked with our schedule and Merrill let us know what would be the noisier days and what type of work would be done. The installers were on-time, kept our house clean and professional as you would hope for and expect from any one doing work in your house over a few days. Even the San Diego City Inspector commented on the clean work in the attic where the furnace now is. So, we were able to get the noise reduced from the system and get a large closet out of it. Also, we went with the air filtration unit upgrade which really does work if you cook alot in the house based on the design of the air intakes for the system. Last, but not least, I delayed in writing this review because the proof in energy savings would show in 1 of top 3 billing cycles which just we just received. With the new HVAC system in place and no other changes to our house, we reduced our electrical consumption by almost (49% less used) in comparison to the same billing cycle last year. In addition and most importantly, we reduced our electrical cost by 59% saving $244 dollars for the Electric charges, even With the new energy/electric rates this year. We were extremely happy with the effectiveness of our new HVAC system prior to the billing cycle, but now we can emphatically say, Action Air was the right choice for our HVAC upgrade/overhaul. A few weeks after install, Action Air made quick adjustments to the dampeners in the ducting as we got used to the new system, too. We just wished we had done this HVAC upgrade a few years sooner.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
