Introduction: Everything! If I have to be specific I would say 2 things: 1 - Watching a student improve and become conversational in Spanish is extremely rewarding. 2 - I have the opportunity to meet some of the nicest, most interesting, coolest people I've ever met in my life.

I've been a student at PBO for over 3 years and my Spanish has improved dramatically! Caro is GREAT and she knows what she's doing. She is creative, smart, fun, and has managed to attract great students who are enjoyable to be with in class. She uses the perfect combination of instruction, coaching and guided conversation. Grammar lessons? Vocabulary? Verb conjugation? Yes, yes and yes. But there are also games, stories, music, show-and-tell, jokes, idioms, word usages, and lots of conversation - structured and informal. One of the aspects I appreciate most about class is the opportunity to about the cultural significance of language and important country-to-country differences. Caro is a delightful person and I highly recommend taking a class from her if you're looking for a Spanish-learning environment that is productive and focused, but also fun and supportive.

I have been taking classes at Pura Buena Onda for about four months now, and I am so happy I found Carolina and her wonderful classes! It has been amazing for me, in terms of improving the Spanish skills I had, learning more (much more), and getting that all-important chance to practice! Caro is a wonderful instructor who knows both how to offer a really great lesson and to facilitate wonderful conversation. She leads, encourages, and corrects us with sensitivity and understanding--and a great sense of humor--so that we feel more at ease with the language and truly improve. And it is always so much fun--she uses entertaining games and conversation starters that make the class something truly to look forward to! I love to go to class, and am always amazed at how the time flies by. Wonderful atmosphere, fun people and a great instructor--this is an amazing way to improve your Spanish!

I have been studying Spanish in an academic setting for years and PBO is where my Spanish went to the next level. Gone is the pressure to complete homework assignments and memorize vocabulary that will be forgotten a few days after the exam. With Caro, we have real life conversations while sitting on comfy couches and every week I look forward to class. If only I had found PBO years ago...I would not have wasted so much time in the conventional classrooms. I speak more in one class with Caro than in an ENTIRE semester in a Spanish class at Mesa College or SDSU. Seriously. Oh yeah. Ever heard that "like attracts like?" Well, being the playful, funny, kind, intelligent woman that Caro is, she attracts students of the same caliber, making the environment of each class FABULOUS. But don't take my word for it and check out PBO for yourself.

I have been taking lessons from Caro for over a year and a half. Learning a new language is tough. Making a commitment to attend class is tough. But Caro makes it enjoyable, great teacher, comfortable, enjoyable, no presurre classes where you actually learn or improve your spanish.

Remarkable classes. You learn fast and easily because the classes are fun, interesting, and informative. Although it is mainly conversation, you do lean about grammar as well. Still you never get bored. The groups are small and for some reason, the students in all the sessions I have attended were nice, pleasant and friendly. The whole experience is just excellent. Worth a try!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Of course. I don't attend seminars or classes because after all, Spanish is my first language. However, I am constantly making an effort to practice my Spanish with other native speakers. Languages are one of those skills that you can lose very easily if you don't practice. Since I offer conversation classes I also read a lot of books about the art of conversation and teaching guides for language teachers.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I honestly fell into it. I decided that I wanted to make a career change about 8 years ago and had no idea what I wanted to do. One of my friends suggested I open my own business and I pretty much told him he was crazy...but it started the wheels churning. I made a few lists of things I enjoy doing, things I did not want to do and skills that I have. Spanish was the last thing I wrote down because I never thought of it as a skill...it was always my 1st language, a way to communicate with my family, but I just never thought of it as a skill. So I started offering classes (I had previous experience from tutoring in high school & college, as well as working for The Migrant Education Program for many years) and got my 1st student. I fell in love with teaching in about 2 minutes flat (even though I had the experience, I had never LOVED it before). And that is how I found my new passion...these days you can't me away from communicating with my students all day long! I LOVE my job!!!
