These guys were awesome! I needed to move from my storage unit to my apartment on the second floor. I messaged them and they had it done the next day. I definitely recommend them!

I hate moving. I absolutely hate it. I especially hate it when I have to temporarily put things in storage for a move as well. I have to say, however, this was one of the smoothest moving experiences I have ever had. I had boxes that had breakables, and I had to give specific instructions for stacking boxes. Jose and Miguel were excellent. They were prompt, polite and were very hard working. They were 5 stars in every way possible. I have to do another move in August, and I am going to call Larro's Moving Services again for sure. I am going to be begging for Jose and Miguel to be the staffers who will be doing my next move too. Thank You for doing an excellent job on my move guys!

They did a fantastic job! This was a bit of an unusual move, because I needed to empty out my mobile storage container from a somewhat remote storage facility, but they found the place and were even nice enough to let me ride in the truck with them back to the city! I had about a studio apartment's worth of stuff, and they loaded and unloaded it in less than 2 hours, plus travel time. I was a little nervous at first because they arrived with a fairly large truck, and was worried that it wouldn't fit anywhere in SF, but they managed to find space. Everything was handled with care, and arrived perfectly intact. Can't go wrong with Two Friends Movers!

Edgar and his helper were super efficient! They started and finished exactly on time, were well prepared for small unexpected things, and were in good spirits throughout on a hot summer day. In all, highly recommend their help. I paid $190 for a 2hr, 2 person move from my storage unit to my apartment (within 5mi). $65/hr + one time truck rental of $60. Works out even better for a slightly longer move!

Patrick was great to work with. I was moving down the hall of the same building and didn't want to pack/ unpack. He was really flexible, helped me move all the big furniture, put a bunch of things in storage and even helped me put away some stuff!

=== SUMMARY === I am a software engineer in Silicon Valley living in a one-bedroom apartment. The idea of moving all my packed boxes and large pieces of furniture, like my sofa, entertainment center, and bookcases, was extremely daunting. Do I hire friends to help me move? Do I hire expensive professional movers? Do I do it myself and get one of those PODS? "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat!" Steve and Joe from Albion Moving and Storage were able to move all my items into their truck and to their final destinations safely and quickly. Their truck was extremely large, so even the largest pieces had room to be properly lifted in and carried out. What made me pick Albion Moving and Storage over other competitors at first was their cheaper hourly rate and their 2-hour minimum. Whereas most other moving companies require a 3-hour minimum, these guys only required 2 hours. In my head, I felt the job would only take 2-or-so hours, so this made the most sense. Steve and Joe worked extremely quickly and efficiently, and the job legitimately took 3 hours. And that is great. It would have taken my friends and I all day (possibly two) to do everything these guys did in 3 hours. Steve and Joe are extremely nice and awesome. They made sure they knew where each item was going (new apartment or storage) and got everything to its final destination quickly and with great care. I am for sure going to be calling these guys again next time I need to move. This was my first moving experience living on my own, so I was extremely nervous. These guys put me at ease and have gained my trust. Thanks Steve and Joe! === DETAILS === They disassembled my dining table quickly and efficiently to have it all fit in my storage unit I was moving things to. They also let me purchase a sofa cover for $5 (very cheap compared to what the storage facility I was using charges for them). I actually had two places I needed my stuff moved to: A storage unit and my new apartment. This was no problem for them. They put everything into their large truck, went to the storage unit, put in everything that went there, and then drove to my new apartment, where they moved in all the remaining items. I was afraid this "moving items to two places" thing was going to be a problem, but it was not at all. They disassembled and reassembled my bed for me, which was very nice. They brought their own doorstops, and had all the equipment they needed to move even my heaviest piece of furniture (my entertainment center). They also have their own insurance, which is a very important detail when hiring movers. The whole process with them took 3 hours. I already had all of my stuff in boxes and all the furniture empty and ready to be moved. All they had to do was move things from my apartment to the truck, and then from the truck to the new locations. They were very efficient at putting the furniture into my storage unit. Had I been charged with storing the items inside, I would have done it in such a way where it wouldn't have fit. These guys assured me they could fit everything, and were able to make everything fit perfectly on their first attempt. (No rearranging was needed, they had already planned out what would go where as soon as they saw the storage unit and the space they had to work with.) Definitely will hire again!

I would not recommend this company what so ever. My movers were incredibly unprofessional, rude to staff, rude to me, and were the absolute worst movers I have ever dealt with before. One mover yelled at the woman running the storage unit I was moving things from, and did not pack my items properly in their budget truck. They broke two pieces of my furniture and my rug is missing. I had to call the cops on them since they were holding my furniture hostage after I said I would complain about the broken furniture. After that, the mover was rude the whole time and called me names/got up in my face and was very confrontational. Trust me, never use this company.

I learned of him through a person I was buying a couch from in SF and she mentioned that she had a 'great' mover available she'd worked with for years if I needed help getting it to my place. I got the movers info and spoke with Daniel the owner. I explained to him I had some stuff in a storage in San Jose I needed him to grab, then to come to SF and grab a couch, make a third stop to grab another piece of furniture I'd bout in SF, and finally deliver everything to my 3rd floor apartment.... he gave me a ridiculously fair deal (almost the same cost if I'd have rented a Uhaul and gotten a helper for 5 hours and done all the driving an loading/unloading). Daniel was amazing! He was very easy to reach (both phone and email) as well as willing to accommodate my special requests. He gave me updates along his route at the different stops and showed up when he said he would... Best of all, him and his team had packed everything carefully (I could see the wrappings they'd put on furniture when they brought it up to my apartment), handled everything with care, and where extremely respectful of my stuff. Daniel and his crew are top class. I've already introduced him to another friend, and I will absolutely be using him again and recommending him to others.

Mike is super nice and professional and everything went super smoothly on his end. It was a little less smooth on my end in a handful of ways, and he was super patient, and made me so much less stressed. It was a small but strange move (we were converting a room from a guest room to a nursery for our new puppy, and had some cabinets in storage to come in and a queen sized bed going into storage), and Mike was totally with me on the whole swap situation. Very happy overall!

We were really pleased with the work Matt did. We had a handful of projects that he completed for us: -Painting and installing trim and a dowel in our laundry -Adding reinforcements, a bike hook and shelving to a storage unit -Hanging floating kitchen shelves He has a great attention to detail when it comes to things like tight seams, clean edges and making things level. He was also on time, friendly, polite and cleaned up after himself. I will note that while we did pay the amount he initially quoted us, it worked out to more than his listed rate of $50/hr, but still seemed reasonable for the job. We'd be happy to use Matt again for future projects!

We were thrilled with M.P. Movers. Marquis Philip was responsive to messages, showed up on time, moved things from one place and Ikea to our home 1-1/2 hours away and assembled an Ikea day bed. He is reliable, a hard worker and a very nice guy. He did an excellent job. We would hire him again, and will refer him to others.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I've used a lot of different moving services before and Clutter is easily the best. The movers showed up at the very start of their arrival window, which prevented me from waiting around. They sent a group of 3 movers and each of them were courteous, professional, and hard working (no waiting around or wasting time). They brought all the equipment they needed, plus extra boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper for fragile items, which was very convenient and helped prevent me from running back to the store to get more of these supplies. Even before the movers got there, the customer service over the phone was excellent and their use of text messaging updates gave me a lot of peace of mind. Their "down to the minute" pro-rated billing felt very fair. I'll only be using and recommending Clutter for moving after this experience.

The movers at AmerApex Moving could not have done a better job moving our belongings over 2,000 miles away. The crew was on time, polite, very careful, and kept the move fun and in good spirits. Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
