I took my 18 year daughter to Sean because early Dec she started experiencing severe abdominal pain from a UC flare up. She was diagnosed in March 2016 but had never experience this kind of pain. After going to the ER a couple of times and even being admitted into hospital for a weekend the pain continued. As a mother I became desperate to find a way to relieve my daughter from the pain she was suffering. I started researching and came across Sean and Blue Bear Healing. I looked on his website and read his reviews. I didn't have anything to lose and my daughter was open to try anything. I am so glad that I took that step and Sean was available to see my daughter on the same day I called him. My daughter had 3 sessions with Sean and every time she saw him I could see her more relaxed. I do think that Sean's ability to look into her emotions and physical being helped her through the pain that is now almost completely gone. She is still seeing a medical doctor and taking medications but mentally and emotionally Sean has helped my daughter through this tough period in her young life. I also think he has made her see herself in a different way that will help her throughout her life.

Wellness By all Means is one stop place for nourishing your mind, body and soul. Manoj ji is very knowledgable, kind and spiritual person. l just fell in love with his style of yoga, especially how he incorporates breathing, meditation and Yog nidra in every session. After each class I felt happy, strong and rejuvenated. Apart from being an excellent yoga guru, Manoj ji does Pranshakti healing. When all the worlds doctors failed to cure my son's sickness, it was his Pranshakti healing ability that cured him. I was completely blown away by this magical power and cannot thank him enough for curing my son. I strongly recommend this place for every one.

Alex's bodywork/massage is unreal. He'll ruin your ability to go to other massage therapists, so be prepared to raise your standards really, really high. I really had no idea that a massage could do to me what he does, but he really is able to go there, to coach you through pain, emotional and physical. He's got such a presence, such a warmth about him, you'll basically want to pay to see him just to hang with him. I had a ton of back pain and wrist pain before coming to see him, I literally thought I had arthritis. Doctors told me I would need surgery. Turns out I just needed Alex, haha! I've probably received from Alex over 20 times, and each time is better than the one before. He's so present and attentive to what he's doing, I can't honestly imagine how he does it for upwards of 2 hours straight. I will be going to Alex forever, he's the best!

I first came to Dr. Katie back in November of 2014 and I hit the jack pot! I had already been thru two months of chiropractic treatments at another place and no improvement on my back or knees until that one first visit with Dr. Katie. She really took interest on my symptoms and went to work on me. Immediately after I got up from the table, I felt a huge improvement on my back and knees. She adjusted places that the other doctor had never touched. I walked out of her office a new person pain free!!! I like that Dr. Katie listens and explains why/how things happen, how she will treat them, and what I can do to improve them. After having experienced myself how good she was (and is) as a chiropractor, I accepted her suggestion on acupuncture as a second method to speed my recovery. Today, the pain on my the back and knees is gone. I still see Dr. Katie for overall improvement on my health mainly thru acupuncture and I always welcome a chiropractic adjustment once a month as I like to keep up good posture on my back. It is a big plus having both acupuncture and chiropractic services provided by the same person. Dr. Katie really cares and works hard to help me better my overall health. I feel she now knows more how my body works than I do myself. I highly recommend Dr. Katie Ngan for acupuncture and chiropractic treatments.

I highly recommend Shawna. She is genuine, warm, caring, knowledgeable, and professional. I saw Shawna regularly for eight months while was working on my doctorate and was in the process of writing my dissertation. My sessions with Shawna were therapeutic. She took the time to listen and get to know me to provide a personalized acupuncture treatment. I believe that the combination of talking with Shawna before each treatment and the treatment itself helped me through one of the most difficult periods of my life. Shawna has a natural ability to be able to listen and offer invaluable guidance without judgment or overstepping. Shawna is in tune and sensitive to the needs of patients. Working with Shawna was empowering and taught me how to take an active role in addressing and healing my anxiety outside of the acupuncture treatments. I am forever grateful for her help through that difficult time.

Dr. Dale White is the best medical provider I have ever worked with. He has been working with me on problems associated with rheumatoid arthritis, and has given me much more help than traditional medicine. He spends a full hour with you, unlike the 5 to 10 minute sessions you have with traditional doctors. Dr. White has a vast knowledge of regular medicine as well as oriental medicine, and is able to apply many methods of treatment that are specific to your need. He is an excellent listener, and is kind and gentle in his treatment.

Dale Fanning is a wonderful acupuncturist. He achieves comprehensive, lasting healing by blending his skill in acupuncture with a high level of intuition, patience and empathy. He imbues the Chinese Medicine view of whole body health with these attributes and the results are nothing short of fantastic. I went to Dale with a constellation of symptoms including chronic illness, musculoskeletal issues thru years of wear and tear on the body, as well as basic urban stress and insomnia. At my initial intake, and now updated at my weekly visit, Dale tales the time to get a thorough view of my health history and current state. His treatments consistently reset the dials, improve my condition and leave me feeling centered and full of life force! The sessions themselves are deeply restful; most of the time I fall into a deep sleep as the parasympathetic nervous system is allowed to kick in. This carries over into the evenings where I always sleep best on treatment days. Overall my conditions have improved substantially. As many people do, I regularly receive chiropractic treatment, massage, physical therapy for specific muscles/joints and have a great family doctor. Of all the things I do, the treatments with Dale are the deepest are always the most effective across the board. This is due to the very nature of Acupuncture, which is it treats the source and the symptom. Over the last 15 years I've received treatment from some of the most well-known and highly respected acupuncturists in the Bay Area and the west coast. I took a lot of care and time to write this review as I would never suggest a practitioner to someone lightly. I recommend Dale without hesitation. His treatments are on par with best in field, and in his own style, he surpasses my previous experiences. I understand he is working in the fertility field and have heard nothing but accolades from his patients I meet in the waiting room. He seems to have a capabilities across a wide range of issues. I say he gets extra points as he has gone to lengths to be able to accept multiple insurance plans to make it possible for the largest number of people to be treated. 5 stars for Dr Dale for sure.

Misha Cohen is an exceptionally knowledgeable, skilled and experienced acupuncturist who keeps up with the newest research and health resources in the field. In fact Misha is sought after by many universities and medical facilities where she lectures to doctors and other practitioners regarding the science and efficacy of acupuncture for healing. I have been a patient of her practice for more than 20 years and believe that her care and thoughtful treatments have kept my blood pressure in check. I highly recommend her as a complementary practitioner.

It's hard for me to recommend Dr Husbands highly enough, he changed my life - seriously! Before I came to see him (I found him via an article he wrote on his blog about low stomach acid), I had been to 3 chiropractors, 2 acupuncturists, 3 GI doctors, 2 physicians, and NONE of them could tell me what was really going on with me. I had a ton of mysterious GI related symptoms that I won't get into on here, suffice it to say there was some seriously terrible stuff going on with my gut and that I could barely function. Dr Husbands was able to order the latest greatest tests I needed (he's very on top of the newest research about supplements & testing), interpret them quickly and efficiently, and recommend the necessary supplements and dietary changes. That was about 2 months ago and since then I'm feeling better than I have in a year! I am now a 100% believer in naturopathic/functional medicine! Dr Doug will get to the root of your problem - not just throw drugs at you and chase symptoms. His expertise reaches far and wide because he's a chiropractor, a nutrionist, and functional medicine doctor. Finding someone like him who was able to tie all of these different disciplines together was what allowed me to finally be diagnosed and start healing. He's also a super nice guy and is very responsive to emails. I do have to say that his services do not come cheap, but can you put a price on your health? I don't think so. He doesn't take my insurance, but I'm told you can resubmit invoices to certain insurance companies so others may be able to get around this. And to be fair he's very generous with his time and doesn't charge me every single time we need to have a phone call or lenghty email which is awesome. If you have an elusive illness that is stumping your doctor and specialists, you owe it yourself to see Dr Doug. Even if you're not sick and just need some nutrional advice or chiropractic work, he's the man!

Amy at Inner Spark Acupuncture & Wellness does an amazing job. I suffer(ed) from chronic migraines, and have been treated by various doctors, including neurologists, in Western medicine for over 30 years. In the last year my migraines had increased from 8-10 a month to 14-16 a month as my job is very stressful (litigation attorney). Finally I figured I would try acupuncture (but was told to not count on it working.) Well... I am hooked. Amy took a great deal time first talking to me about all of my symptoms, the triggers for migraines, where the migraines are felt the most, my other general health, eating habits, routines, and sleep patterns, etc. I was actually starting to have a migraine during the end of the initial talk (not because of her of course), so when I told her that: she immediately determined places to insert the needles in the various places on my body (I think it was about 10 total) and my migraines WENT AWAY! Additionally, after having treatments twice a week and now down to 1 week, my migraines are only about 5-7 month and she has helped with my TMJ/grinding my teeth! So --- I highly recommend Amy at Inner Spark. She is knowledgeable, it works and she has great customer service too!

I used Carol's hypnotherapy to manage anxiety before a major surgery, to manage pain after surgery, and to help with a positive outcome. As a result, I went into surgery without apprehension. The doctor told me to expect severe pain for a week after surgery and gave me oxy. I never had to take a single pill as I had no pain at all because Carol taught me hypnosis skills to manage pain. My potentially 3 night hospital stay was only one night because I felt so good. At my 2 week follow-up visit the surgeon released me far sooner than he normally would have he said because I had healed so well and quickly. I credit the work that I did with Carol for preparing me for a pain free outcome and quick recovery. I recommend her without hesitation.

Leslie made me a runner again! Before I hired Leslie, doctors said I would never be able to run long distance because of my severe plantar fasciitis. After a month of working with her, I was able to run 2 miles without pain. Her corrective exercise programing and approach to coaching helped me run my fourth half marathon after a two year hiatus. Not only that, I was able to achieve a personal record running my fastest half marathon time. Leslie is an amazing trainer and coach! She knows how and when to raise the bar, pushing you to the next level in achieving your personal goals. She has helped me develop a new lifestyle of health and wellness that goes beyond physical exercise. I am constantly amazed by the abundance of knowledge and expertise she is able to share. You will not be disappointed when you work with her. If you are looking for a holistic personal trainer and life coach, hire Leslie! She will get you where you want to be in no time.

Hong Chen, LAc. is a skilled Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor and his acupuncture treatments have worked effectively for me. I saw Dr. Chen for insomnia and menopause problems. I had been suffering from insomnia for many years but it was getting worse; on top of that I had heart palpitations, nervousness, dry eyes, hot flashes, and night sweats. Within three treatments, my hot flashes and night sweats were gone. After about twelve treatments, I was able to fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and I felt much better rested; the palpitations and nervousness were soothed and I felt more at ease. I am continuing to see Dr. Chen to further improve my health. During each visit Dr. Chen takes my pulse, checks my tongue, and listens to my concerns to make his diagnosis. During the acupuncture treatment he regularly checks the pulse to see if the treatment is working, and adjusts the needles accordingly. He has occasionally prescribed herbs, too, to supplement the treatment, though his acupuncture alone is already effective. Dr. Chen's acupuncture works and I would highly recommend anyone looking to improve their daily health to seek him out. The building in which his office is located is a little run down, but Dr. Chen keeps a very clean and welcoming clinic. He is easy to talk to, is open to questions, and never rushes the appointment. You will be in good hands.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

        • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
        • Nutritional medicine
        • Botanical medicine
        • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
        • Hygiene
        • Counseling
        • Minor surgery
        • Homeopathy
        • Acupuncture
        • Intravenous and injection therapy
        • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

        Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

        Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

        • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
          • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
        • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
          • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
          • Do I need a referral?
          • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
          • What will the co-pay be?
          • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
        • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
