Mayra was incredibly professional, efficient, and very talented. My mom and I both got lighter looks, and they came out great and went very well with our dress colors. I would 100% work with her again.

Chantelle provided wedding makeup for me, 5 bridesmaids, and my mother. She did an amazing job making everyone look absolutely gorgeous and yet still natural and like themselves. My makeup stayed beautiful all night long -- after 12 hours, when I got home at the end of the night, it still looked incredible! She's also great fun to be around: chatty, funny, sweet, and just a beacon of light. She's exactly the kind of person you want around on your wedding day (or any day) to help you laugh and stay calm. I would hire her again in a heartbeat, have already recommended her to one friend, and will continue to recommend her to anyone in need of a makeup artist!

I first went to to yvonne after years and years of mediocre hair results. I didn't know my hair had the potential it did until my hair collided with her mastery! I realize now, u don't truly know what having amazing hair is like if you've never experienced it. I even saw a different stylist, after seeing her, when she wasnt available and i was desperate. They were good....but they werent yvonne. Since then, i didn't allow anyone else to touch my finicky and borderline untamable hair. I live in NH and yvonne was in VA....i literally would fly to her just to get my hair done!!!! If that doesnt speak volumes, then i don't know what does. Then yvonne sold her salon and moved to California......i died inside! It wasnt the salon that stole my heart.....it was yvonne, so going to the same salon was not, and is not, an option in my mind. I knew she would feel awful if i expressed this to her, so i waited.....and longed for the possibility of her return. I went 2 years with not allowing another soul to even so much as trim my hair. I finally caved and told her. This phenomenal woman ended up going out of her way to recommend a comparable stylist, and then spoke with him through facetime and messaging for HOURS, guiding him through my hair and my personality so that i got the best possible outcome. She did all this from across the country, without hesitation, and with nothing to gain from it. There aren't words for the empathy this woman possesses, nor for her insane skills! Although her temporary replacement was great, he is not her. Once you've had the best....u can never have less than it. A client for LIFE!!!!!

Wedding day makeup. Loved the at home experience. I was comfortable and since I had gone to the salon prior to the day of my wedding, there was nothing missing. Very pleasant experience.

Her experience on sets as well as behind a salon chair make her a very experienced artist, and knows exactly what it takes to make a client happy. She is very easy to get along with and work with, and always maintains a professional image. I would highly recommend her for any job.

Charm is an excellent hairdresser! With her expertise knowledge and skill, she has made my hair amazing, which has given me confidence that I didn't have before. For the past 13 years, I've had a disorder which causes hair loss due to uncontrollable hair pulling. My head was covered in bald and thinning patches that were extremely difficult to conceal, and I was looking for a good way to cover the spots while my hair grew out. I went to other salons prior to visiting Charm and none of them were able to help me in the way that I needed, some weren't able to work with me at all with the condition my hair was in. I went into this looking to get extensions, though with Charm's knowledge and experience we changed this idea to give me a sew-in wig. Charm purchased, designed, and installed the whole thing herself, which was extremely helpful to me since I went into this not knowing what to do or what to expect. Needless to say, the end result was fantastic. Charm did a great job selecting color, constructing the piece, and then attaching it to my own hair so that I could sleep and shower in it. She even provided helpful tips for styling and maintaining the hair's life so that I could have it as long as possible. I've had my sew-in for the past few months and I love it! It has drastically improved my quality of life and confidence in myself. My hair has also grown back in a lot since the installation. I'm excited to see the end result when my own hair grows out to an even length and can be worn naturally, and I will continue to see Charm for her excellent work!

I have been coming to Gretchen for over 6 years. I found her when she worked at Veer & Wander salon and have been following her career since... I had a VERY unfortunate incident at another salon when I first moved to San Francisco and needed color correction in a bad way. She had glowing recommendations from her days as a colorist at Mercer Street Salon and had just moved to Veer & Wander (note: she now works at ML Studio). I immediately set an appointment! When we met, she consulted me the new coloring process, how it would perform, and how we could fix it over time. SHE IS LIKE A SCIENTIST FOR HAIR! She knows things on a molecular level: what the color will do based on your natural color, current color in your hair, and how it will look over time, etc. Time and time again, I could not be happier with the way Gretchen does my hair. I am continually being complemented on the color of my hair and how naturally flawless it looks. Note: I am a dark brunette, and I have highlights put in that are a slight color lighter- I have struggled in the past with others pulling out the natural red in my hair, but it ending up looking too "brassy." Every time I leave, we both agree how, "yummy" my hair looks! Moreover, Gretchen is a wonderful, kind person who is great to chat with while you're in her chair! She's also an avid workout enthusiast who always has tons of workout and nutrition advice for me whenever I ask- BONUS... Salon Macias is a great salon with friendly service and happy staff. I am always greeted with a smile and some wine (or tea, coffee, water, sparkling). Other things to note is how clean and chic the layout is, and they always have new artists showcasing their work on their walls which makes for an all around comfortable and creative environment. Needless to say, they do not disappoint. If you are looking for an amazing colorist, Gretchen is your gal. Enjoy!

The best Stylist for Japanese in San Francisco!! I have Asian hair with thick and a super volume hair almost cannot manage it my self. I have been living in S.F. for almost 10 yrs and went to many different Japanese hair salons (I only go to the Japanese hair salon because they are the best to me), but no one could ever cut my hair what I 100% like and I was always looking for a suitable hair stylist for my self. (I made an exemption) I finally met the person who cuts my hair perfect. Eduardo hair cut was blown me away seriously. He knows how to cut and how to bring out the best in me. It's like a wow magic cut believe me! I don't need to go to the hair salon as often that I used to anymore. My hair getting better and better as time passes. I get so many compliments on my hair since I have gone to this hair salon. Also Eduardo’s color, is amazing. I will definitely go to this salon while I live in S.F.

The beautiful girl you see on Phi's thumbtack is my cousin. Phi did an amazing job making my wedding party look like they came straight out of a photo shoot for a magazine. Every bridesmaid looked so beautiful! Their hair and makeup was flawless. As I was planning for my wedding, I took everyone's advice and booked a salon professional to do my hair. Everyone told me since I was the bride, I should spend the money and make sure I had a "professional" do my hair. I went ahead and booked my regular hair stylist. Since she did such a great job cutting my hair for the last two years, I figured she'd do an amazing job with my hair for my wedding. She was so pricey I didn't book a pre run since she was going to charge me full price for her time. Since we had a good client and stylist relationship I went ahead and trusted she would be able to give me what I wanted. Little did I know styling and cutting are two completely different things. She did an okay job with my hair but I have to admit, for the amount I paid, I wasn't completely satisfied. I could tell as she was styling my hair she didn't really know how to pin the curls and it didn't look anything like the picture I brought in. While I was getting my hair done, Phi was busy working on my girls at my sister's house. I didn't get to see their beautiful faces until later on that morning. When I saw them for the first time, I couldn't believe how amazing they looked. Each brides maid had her hair done and make up in a way that complimented their personalities and style. My maid on honor was done up a bit more elaborate than my bridesmaids. My bridesmaids generally did not wear a lot of make up so their make up was very natural and stunning at the same time. To add some commonalities to each bridesmaid, Phi added a floral piece to everyone's hair. Everyone was able to sport a different look but had a similar flower that tied them together. I loved it all! Phi and I are still very close and I've told her numerously, the one regret I have was not hiring her to be my stylist. She did such an amazing job and I love looking at her work on all her new clients. She's so easy to work with and delivers great work and service! Since my wedding she has grown as an artist and I am so grateful to have had an opportunity for her to be a part of my special day!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
