Greg diagnosed our plumbing problem and provide quality work/repair for a good value.
I hired Jasper from My Apartment Is Better Than Yours. I think they did a terrific job at a very reasonable price. I'm really pleased that I decided to go with them. I had a number of unusual carpentry tasks to complete when I moved to my new place. The windows were old and the wood was irregular and moldy, so the wood around the antique glass panels needed to be replaced. I was told those windows hadn't been opened in 40 years, but now they work perfectly and you'd never know the wood wasn't original. Also, several doorways lacked doors when I moved in, and were unusual rounded shapes cut into the stucco without doorframes. Jasper was able to make me custom doors with antique iron-wrought handles, and they look awesome. I also needed threshholds worked on, cabinets put up, new benches made for my roof deck, a custom projector and screen put in, antique chandeliers installed, a lock repaired... and I'm probably forgetting one or two things. They are in the process of putting the finishing touches on my humidor (they had to build me custom legs for it), and it's going to look spectacular. Anyway, they knocked it all out of the park. They were prompt and clean and didn't cause much of a disturbance despite all the work they were doing. They'll be my go-to for anything I need done in the future. I definitely recommend them.
David was on time and on point for creative problem solving. The tricky repair was completed as quoted. Will definitely ask him to quote again on future repairs or rebuilds.
Angel and his crew made two pillars and four below-ground concrete pylons as footing for a 4-legged gazebo to straddle a circular pavilion in my backyard. His crew also poured a 7’ x 2’ concrete slab in our side yard to function as a grill parking spot. Angel had car trouble the first day, which delayed the start of work to two days later than we had agreed on. His crew spread the work over three evenings, delaying another crew's start date for assembly of the gazebo by two days. The posted rate for Angel's work was $45/hour. When the work was finished, Angel presented me with a bill that would have charged $40 an hour for each of his crew's 5 laborers. Angel may be an engineer worth $45 an hour, but someone digging a hole for concrete does not earn $40 an hour, so we renegotiated. Angel received $45/hour, and each of his workers earned $20/hour. We declined to pay for hours when multiple workers were present, but only one of them was working, since the others were just waiting for Angel to arrive. In addition to wages and materials, we paid $150 for gas. Angel would have spent less on gas, if the work had been concentrated into fewer days, which I would have preferred. The end result is: the anchors are level. The two front pillars have air pockets as large as 0.5" h x 2.5" in the sides, indicating the cement wasn’t packed down well. (I will use filler to get a smooth surface, after which paint will be necessary to hide the filler.) The work started late, was spread over too many days, and the concrete pillars should not have the air pockets they have. On the up side, I appreciated how clean the worksite was when Angel finished. He also gave me a few expert answers to questions I had about other potential concrete projects. Angel is polite and knowledgeable. Even so, it is important to be very specific with your timeline, cost expectations, and aesthetics up front.
We hired Carlos and his team to paint several rooms in our office as well as patch some holes and do other minor repairs to the wall. They did an excellent job. I can't even tell that the holes were ever there! They were also very clean. I've hired three different painters for this office and this is the first time that I haven't heard any complaints. They were very polite and professional.
We hired Dave to do a medium sized job at our home. It was what I would call a "landscape refresh/repair". We had another landscaper do some work a couple of years back and it looked great at first but quickly because a major issue as the lawn was dying and the flagstone he installed started falling apart within a very short period of time. We tried on a number of occasions to get the other landscaper to come back and fix his work but he never did. So, I finally came to Thumbtack, interviewed a number of possible landscapers and landed on Dave. This time, as a way of protecting ourselves from our last experience I asked Dave to sign a contract prior to starting. He was totally willing to do that which gave me some peace of mind. He got started when he said he would and overall the project went very smooth. First I'll list the positives from our experience: • Job was done in a reasonable amount of time and the end result is beautiful! • Dave stayed within the budget we set • He did some little extras for us which were greatly appreciated like building a redwood box to cover our sprinkler valves and added some soil around our front yard fence posts to even out the grade of the lawn. • He was selected very nice looking plants for us, with minimal direction from me, and chose larger size plants to give it a better look to start out and also to give the plants a better chance of surviving. Landscapers we have used in the past plan 4" plants instead of 1 gallon to save money but many of them die within the first couple of weeks. • He will continue to come by and keep tabs on how things are growing and make sure nothing dies right out of the gate. • He came up with innovative solutions to some of our irrigation issues Here are a couple of things that were less than perfect: • There were a couple of miscommunications between Dave and the guy who was doing the work. One of those led to a very frustrating couple of hours for my husband who had to dig out a bunch of new soil and mulch in order to find disconnect speaker and lighting wires and repair them even though the worked knew that those wires were disconnected. Instead, the worker should have waited to cover those areas until the wires were fixed. Dave handled this well though and worked with my husband on getting the issue resolved. All in all, we were very happy with Dave and his team. They were clean, courteous and did quality work. I will update again in a few weeks with how things are growing.
Ken was efficient and no-nonsense in installing a sink in our garage. He evaluated the project, proposed a couple of different methods, and once we had chosen, executed quickly. I would have him back for other plumbing needs in a heartbeat.
Bill came on time and promptly fixed and replaced our door lock. I am very happy with his work, will definitely consider him with any future repairing work.
Michael removed an old fence and installed a new 20' fence including a gate at my son's house back in Feb-March 2015 timeframe. He and his crew did an excellent job. They showed up on-time, installed the fence in a timely manner and cleaned-up. Further, Michael came back to look at a sprinkler pipe that could have been damaged during the fence install and repaired it without question. Michael is a professional that strives for 100% customer satisfaction. My son was very pleased with Michael's work and will use him again. Sorry for the very late review...
Andres reset the drain pipe of a toilet seat and had to go into the crawl space. Excellent work, responsive and timely.
Teri redesigned my children's bedroom last fall. The space was small and limiting, yet Teri found a way to transform the room. The bright colors, lovely (and age-appropriate artwork), and affordable furniture have created a very warm and positive space. Teri has a unique way of working with you. She takes the time to get to know you a a person and understand your unique tastes and styles. She works with your budget and has an excellent supply chain and is able to get some amazing deals! I would recommend Teri to anyone looking to redesign any space in their home!
Replacing our old clay sewer line and galvanized water service pipe and installing the cleanouts turned out to be quite a project. Marino and Tim planned to hand-dig the trenches for the pipes to avoid damaging the irrigation and gas lines in the yeard, but soon realized they would not be able to get through the matted redwood tree roots and rock-laced soil and get the job done in a timely way. So they went to plans B and C: a trencher for the water service trench and a bobcat for the sewer line trench. They worked slowly and carefully with the bobcat operator to dig the sewer line trench without nicking the nearby gas line. They worked 6 long hard days digging, laying pipe, and then refilling the trenches and compacting the soil by hand. I was home most of the time, and they kept me informed about what they were doing and how things were going. Marino is a great communicator and explains things very well and thoroughly. Marino and Tim knew exactly what they were doing and were very exacting about laying the sewer pipe at the proper pitch, for example, and cleaning up every evening. We ended up paying a bit more than the original estimate because we had to pay the bobcat operator and because the sewer line trench ended up being longer than we expected (runs diagonally across our yard instead of straight to the street), but the extra was fair given what we encountered on the project. I am very happy with the work I think they take a lot of pride in their work and want to do the best job possible. I also really enjoyed having them around while they were at my house.
Kieran performed an extensive basement remodel that involved floor level changes, new heater system, plumbing, rewiring, sheet rocking and floor finishing. On another job for me he replaced a large 5' by 10' custom Douglas fir window on the second floor of a Victorian shingle house. Kieren always maintains a high quality level in his work. He is resourceful, excellent at planning, and very rigorous at maintaining schedule. He also has access to good, skilled workers in multiple disciplines. He also maintains very good communications with the client, responding to questions promptly and explaining the steps of the job. The jobs Kieran has done for me have all turned out very well. Highly recommended.
PPM was hired to clean and reseal a residential concrete floor and pressure wash our multi-unit building. The projects were completed on time and they did a good job overall. Very knowledgeable.
but the guy called me next day demanding more money! not good!
