As fairly new homeowners, during the first big rain of the season we found ourselves with a leak in our daughter's bedroom and lots of worries. I quickly requested some quotes from local contractors and was immediately contacted by Stephen. He was quick to schedule a day to come and evaluate repairs and get back out to get repairs done. Our drywall had to be replaced and we also found ourselves with another leak in the kitchen. His follow up was outstanding and we couldn't be happier with the service we received from Stephen, Jerry and their drywall contact. The repairs were completed in a timely manner and very professionally. Thank you again Box Construction!!!

Jose and J Custom Construction were quick, professional, fair, and did quality work. I am a general contractor myself, and was in need of some technical demo work before my remodel. I recommend Jose and his team for any project you might have.

If I could select 5 areas instead of just 3 that I liked about Dave, I would! If you have the opportunity to hire Dave, consider yourself lucky. You’ll feel completely at ease that your project will happen on time and on budget with good communication. And having been a builder hiring and managing contractors for some 10 years on and off...this kind of contractor is rare. I first hired Dave to install the 22 windows in my new construction project. That went extremely well. Then I hired him to paint the house. I wasn’t ready as scheduled and he handled it professionally with understanding. We started 2 days later and he hit it hard. Then I hired him to complete the drywall, mud and tape for 1000sf. Those walls are perfectly smooth...no texture...straight corners. Then he tiled a bathroom with 2’ x 6” tiles and adjoining pebble stone mesh tile. IT IS PERFECT. When the last task was taking longer than expected, Dave’s wife and son jumped in and worked until 11pm to finish when promised. As I say, if you’re reading this then count yourself lucky to have happened across Dave.

Miguel and his team are true professionals and found ways to resolve problems in the most cost-effective manner. Their work was perfect and they clean up after every job. They did electrical, plumbing, carpentry and general handyman jobs. I have tried many different services, but I will only use Miguel for my jobs in the future.

Hyde Handcraft was one of the most professional, hard working and honest contractors I have ever worked with! When considering which contractor to hire I had multiple bids. Hyde gave a very fair bid but was actually not the cheapest. I decided to use them based on the other reviews on Thumbtack. I am so glad I did! They always showed up when they said they were going to, or they would give plenty of notice to a change in time. They moved furniture carefully and cleaned up every space cleaner than it was before! They were so kind to our kids always talking to them and never annoyed at the constant questions from our 2 year old :). They put so much pride in their work...while installing all of our crown molding it would have been easy to not work with the crooked wall. Yet they spent way more time than they planned making it look perfect! They also installed exterior doors for us and they did an amazing job! I will definitely be using Hyde Handcraft again for any other work I need done and I highly recommend them to anybody who wants a fair price, professional contractors and outstanding quality. Josiah

Antonio was one of the best contractors I've ever hired. He replaced a section of chain link fencing with wood fencing on a property I just purchased. He was very pleasant, knowledgable, efficient, and courteous. He came exactly on time, updated me every day regarding progress, and cleaned up after he was finished. All this at a very reasonable rate. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Antonio again!

Greg was very meticulous from start to finish. He was punctual and moved from electrical work to rod hanging with ease. Although the projects took him a little longer than anticipated, he stuck to his original quote and listened to all our requests patiently. He is very knowledgeable about several areas of the construction business and we trust the quality of his work. And he has a good sense of humor.

I had some miscellaneous outdoor work I contracted with this company including tree removal, demo and masonry wall repair/infill. Jason was punctual and professional. We communicated before the contract was carried out, during, and at close out. He was clear and upfront about cost issues. The cost was fairly priced as well as the add services. My advice as a client is to be clear and upfront if you have issues or questions. Most things can be resolved with your contractor if you keep communication lines open. You can always say no or ask them to fix the work if it is not the agreed upon expectations.

I could not give a higher rating for Abe. This is an extraordinarily kind, honest, hardworking, and likeable guy. He does great work for a good price. He communicated through every step of the process and the end product was wonderful. He did a bunch of misc things for us, including drywall, insulation, and duct work. He is very talented and knows his way around most every trade. Best of all, you can't help but feel comfortable to have him around your home. He is just a great guy and a reliable, affordable option when you don't want to do the work yourself. I'll be hiring him again, that is for sure.

I found Chris when I was given one of his fliers by a friend who raved about his work. I only deal with licensed contractors, since I've been burned before and there's little recourse when they disappear or change their phone#, plus eventually I have a lot of work I want to get done and I want it all legit in case I need permits,etc... And licenses tell me a person has made the effort to put his time in, learn a trade, and become licensed. It's cost me more money to fix things that have been done sub-par over the years. The paint on my house trim was peeling and I could see the wood was becoming damaged in some areas, which means more money to fix rotted wood, so I was anxious to get the exterior paint done. I shopped around. Chris gave me a fair estimate, plus he was confident in his work and I saw the results at my neighbor's house. I loved that he was very respectful of my house, my yard, clean up, and his work was so clean! He gave me a head's up that some of the wood may be more damaged once he sanded the old paint. He showed me the damaged wood and gave me the option to fix it or not, which of course needed to be done. He replaced some old window sills and window frames. You can't even tell which ones he replaced! Everything matches the other windows! I couldn't be more pleased. After a few weeks I saved some money and was still so excited about the outside of my house finally getting done right that I decided to get some work done in the bathroom. My house is 90 yrs old, the interior walls have plaster not drywall, which many guys don't want to touch, but Chris said "No problem!" it's one of his specialities. He explained what's involved, wrote an estimate, and now I've got one bathroom done and it looks AWESOME! My husband is impressed. We're going to have a dinner party with friends to celebrate. Chris is a solid guy with good old fashioned work ethic. We have only great things to say about his work! After the new year we're going to save money and have a deck built so my husband can barbecue outdoors. Thumbs up times a hundred!

After having a water leak, we decided to have the kitchen and family room renovated. This involved the replacement of floors, counters, sink and cooktop as well as refinishing extensive cabinetry. We were not remotely impressed by the first 4 or 5 contractors we called. We then had Morena Tile and Home Design come to provide an estimate. The difference was amazing. Sami and his team immediately demonstrated working knowledge of what needed to be done and how it could be accomplished in each area. After their analysis we did not look further because we felt we had finally found the contractor for the project. The quote was in the ballpark of what we thought it would cost so we did not even consider looking for a lower bid. The whole project started and ended in a timely fashion. The various workers were obviously experienced in their respective fields and performed beautifully. Even so, there was daily review and supervision of the project by a manager. I had heard nightmare stories about contractors from many sources but with Morena, we never had an unpleasant moment. There were no surprises or additional costs except for changes we requested. The attitude of all involved was so positive and friendly that we actually missed them when it was over. The finished product was impressive and as close as it can come to perfect. We are looking forward to having this company remodel other areas of our home very soon and highly recommend them. Tina T San Clemente, CA

I was very happy with the completed landscape project. Bill Sullivan sent 2 extremely good workers who removed a giant yucca plant, added to an existing wall while finishing it with stucco and a flagstone cap, as well as created a beautiful border between the sidewalk and the front yard with attractive-looking pavers. The price was fair and the quality, as well as the aesthetic of the finished work was excellent. I do think Mr. Sullivan knows his construction business, but he is not as responsive or really good at communication as I would have preferred. All in all though, if you are patient and flexible, the work was done very well.

I will be calling on Matt from now on for any tasks that need a contractor, handyman, or jack-of-all-trades! He is ultra responsive and his rates are extremely reasonable - especially considering the excellent skills he brings to the task and his “let’s get this done” work ethic. Matt is professional, courteous, very conscientious yet flexible: so easy to work with! He responded to my handyman request within minutes of my posting it. We worked out details at that time, he accepted the job and he had everything completeed at my home 36 hours later! While working steadily, quickly and effectively, he still took the time to involve me in “design” or “installation” decisions when there were options - something I really appreciated. He’s a great person; left the work areas clean and tidy and left me feeling I’d found a great resource!

I though John communicated very well during our construction project. He was very flexible on any changes. Most contractors are very flaky; not showing up on time or wanting to get paid before the project is completed. You will not go wrong hiring John. He is top shelf.

We hired Nick Sinyuk as our contractor for a complete kitchen remodel. We chose Nick based on his high Thumbtack ratings, as well as both his (low) estimates for cost and time completion of 2 weeks. While the job took him 4 weeks rather than 2, he worked very hard to build a beautiful kitchen that has received glowing reviews all-around. He cut no corners, used quality materials, and sought our input on every decision and detail. He rebuilt our kitchen from scratch -- this included: installation of a new wood floor that is immaculate, built a dreamy custom island, refinished our ceiling, and built an entire kitchen cabinet and counter area that maximized our space and storage. Our kitchen is a dream -- it is truly a chef's designer kitchen. We would hire Nick again based on his skilled craftsmanship, pricing, and timely work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
