My experience with Guardian Investigations was far better than I could have ever hoped for. I had a defendant I believed would be extremely difficult to serve in a timely manner as she is known to hide from anyone she suspects is "out to get her." I anticipated many attempts and even the possibility that a stake out might be necessary in order to accomplish service. Much to my amazement, Peter managed to serve the defendant on his very first try. I was stunned and extremely relieved that it was done so quickly. Peter Barranco was very responsive to my needs. He provided a quote for his services promptly. He met with me at the time we agreed to meet and was right on time. His fee was very reasonable, especially in light of the difficulties I anticipated he would encounter accomplishing service on this defendant. I was more than happy to pay him for his services. Peter was professional and understanding and did everything he said he would do. Plus, he's just a nice guy - very easy to talk to. I would highly recommend Peter Barranco and Guardian Investigations to anyone in need of his services. Thanks, Peter!! Stephanie

I initially chose to use Jim Black at Fidelis Investigative & Security Services out of a number of potential process servers for his prompt response to my inquiry through Thumbtack and other sources. I found his reasonable fee schedule to be superior to the others for a simple service of a Small Claims Summons. After he served my Summons within hours of retaining his services, I was quite please and impressed with his services and would recommend him and his firm to others.

I hired Joseph Recovery for 2 jobs...1 was to help me find a way to collect on a 2 year old judgement and the other was a family issue(possible cheating spouse) I have tried other companies before with no luck. They handled the family issue fast with photos and video. The judgement work was even better, they found the bank and even knew when to have the Writ delivered so I got all my money. Great company, great service, and great price. Very discreet. 100% recommended. Hope I never need them again but if I do, they will be my first call.

My LE training and experience give me a larger tool box to work from. As a former gang investigator I have better resources available to me than most private investigators. My team is composed of several former LE members (Who are also licensed Private Investigators) with more extensive training and experience than most firms.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

    • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
    • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
    • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
