I can not say enough good things about Roger and Gabe. They catered our office's Administrative Professionals Day luncheon and did a fantastic job! They arrived on time, had the food ready on time, and constantly kept enough food in our buffet. We have a few vegetarians in our office and Roger prepared cauliflower steaks for them. By the time one of our vegetarians got to the BBQ, her cauliflower steak had been mistakenly eaten by someone. Without being asked, Roger ran over to a nearby grocery store and purchased another cauliflower steak to make for our employee. While there was plenty of vegetarian sides for her to enjoy and she didn't make a fuss, Roger still took it upon himself to fix a mistake that was our fault - not his. Oh and the most important part, the food is amazing! Everyone in our office was raving about the food, that is before we all fell into our food comas. :) Big Mann BBQ is fantastic. I cannot recommend them enough!

We hired Josie to feed our 20+ wedding party the morning after our wedding, and she nailed it! She prepared a fantastic menu that catered to Gluten Free (fantastic muffins, toast) and Normal diets alike... Let herself in to the villa while we were still sound asleeep, so that we awoke to great coffee and amazing spread. Very grateful for culinary skills and easy-going nature, thanks Josie!

Supreme lives up to his name he is certainly "Supreme" He has Supreme food, Supreme service, Supreme Personality, and Supreme Passion for what he does. He cares about his client. He delivers on time, his food is light and delicious. You feel the intention in every bite. I highly recommend not only booking Supreme for your personal meal prep but a small or large dinner party, company lunch, family outing, or if you are looking to drop some lbs. Supreme will help come up with a healthy meal plan catered to your dietary needs. Obviously his food is VEGAN but he can couple that with gluten free too! You will not be disappointed. In fact he is not only an amazing chef, but a wonderful beautiful human being. You will be inspired!.Enjoy!

I hired Chef Nikki to cater our backyard wedding reception of 30 people. After speaking to numerous people who didn't seem to understand what kind of menu I was looking for, (I wanted our guests to experience our dinner as if it were a tasting menu in a restaurant, but with slightly larger portions.) I was absolutely elated within 2 minutes of talking to Nikki on the phone. She understood immediately as to what I was going for. She is the most bubbly, outgoing, lovable, and simply FABULOUS person on the planet. She was just as excited as I was for this event. Which was really great. Other people I spoke with seemed not to care as much about our event because it wasn't a 200 person wedding OR didn't understand what type of menu I wanted. I gave her full creative control of our menu, and she did an AMAZING job! She even made adjustments for a last minute guest who was a vegetarian. She was extremely flexible & just simply wanted us to be happy. If we didn't like something, she would change it or adjust it to your liking, but we loved everything and our 5 course almost turned into a 7 course!! Every person at our wedding said they loved the food, including my foodie blogger friend. She gave us huge portions & left us with a ton of leftovers that we enjoyed the next day. We had a seated dinner, and she provided wait staff and a bartender. ALL of the waitstaff/bartender were so WONDERFUL!! They were so happy, friendly, and did a great job! Chef Nikki & her staff, simply put, are total perfection. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Chef Nikki & her staff and I look forward to hiring her for all our future events. Thank you again Chef Nikki & Staff!! We loved you! Tory & Ross

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
