Turn around time was prompt, all communication was timely and professional, no-mow sod installation was beautifully done. The project had stone borders on 3 sides and CRC cleaned up the underlying growth, and carefully reinstalled the stones flush with the new sod. We highly recommend their work.

Walter and his father are a fantastic team. They did an excellent job putting in two 35 feet long stepping stone pathways in my front yard. Walter responded quickly, gave a reasonable quote, was on time, and worked efficiently. I basically knew what I wanted for the pathways, but Walter made the project even better with his constructive suggestions. I am thrilled with Walter's service and the outcome of the project. I would definitely hire him again.

Gustavo was prompt and very thorough. I had him do clean up and hauling away yard debris, planting, fix plumbing and electrical, etc. It was a 2 day job and he and his team did great. I'm hiring him back next week for other related projects and I guess re-hiring someone without reservation is the ultimate compliment.

Ricardo was recommended by a friend & did a great job with my backyard. My backyard looked like a forest. Ricardo cleaned everything out & brought down a 20foot old tree that was dying. We then decided to go with decomposed granite with stone walkway. He added plants along the walkway for extra decoration. Looks amazing. 10/10

Very not-trivial front-yard landscaping project completed by David and his crew without a hitch. Project included removing large amount of soil, building split rail fence with 9 hand-built stone veneer columns and red wood 4x4 rails, installing stone veneer around the front of the house (about 80 linear feet), installing about 800 sq feet of artificial turf, adding about 5 tonnes of cobble stone, truck load of mulch, planting a tree and about 40 plants, adding drip irrigation system and trimming 4 medium size trees.

We hired Lifetime Remodeling in the summer of 2017 to do a first floor addition to our home in Millbrae. The project involved adding 400 square feet to our house, which included expanding the living room and adding a new bedroom and a new bathroom. It was wonderful working with Sam and his team at every step of the way. Their bid was very competitive compared to the many others I got, and the estimated time for completion (about four months) was much shorter than most of the other quotes. Lifetime's responsive customer service and attention to detail made our lives so much easier. Here are just a few examples of things they did to minimize our stress. When strong winds blew the construction fence over during off hours, they came out here quickly to get it back up and weigh it down with sandbags. When it came time to block off the parts of the house being demolished, they helped us move furniture and cover it carefully so that it would not get damaged or dirty during construction. When they needed to move the wiring for our internet access, they made sure to reconnect it promptly. The temporary wall they built was very sturdy and effective at blocking out dust, so we had no problem continuing to live in the house throughout the construction. Sam also closely inspected all the work and often caught adjustments to be made that I did not notice. For example, even though the interior painting looked fine to me, Sam decided that he wanted another coat. When we did point out other things that needed adjusting, such as leveling out certain fixtures, the team promptly fixed them. When I asked for a different design for our recessed lighting at the last minute, even after some of them had already been installed, Sam accommodated the request. Sam checked in with me often, so I always felt well informed about the next steps coming up and what I needed to plan for. This was awesome because I learned that it can be agonizing to pick out tiles, hardwood, hardware, etc. for a project like this, especially for someone like me doing it for the first time. It was also helpful to have Sam's recommendations for suppliers for the finishes and fixtures. We were really impressed that Lifetime finished the project pretty much right on schedule and with absolutely no cost overruns. To make this happen, most days, Lifetime had a team of two to four workers here by 8 a.m., and they worked steadily for the entire day. They also often worked on weekends. After Lifetime finished the addition to the house, we ended up also hiring them to do landscaping for our front yard and replacing our concrete driveway with paver stones. They also did a great job on this, and we are so happy with and amazed by how our house looks now. Remodeling inevitably involves many hard decisions and a lot of time, energy, and money invested by the homeowner! The last thing you need is a contractor who adds unnecessary stress, yet it seemed like everyone I talked to had horror stories about their contractors. We are so grateful that Sam and Lifetime made it a wonderful experience for us.

When you desire to have pavers installed around your home, don't waste your time checking out all the different companies. There is only one company to do the job, Black Diamond Paver Stones & Landscaping in San Ramon. We contracted with them to install pavers beside the swimming pool in our back yard. The plan was to make a significant addition to pavers that were already in place for several years. The result was a perfect match to the existing pavers, with an identical pattern and excellent blend between the old and the new. During the week-long installation procedure, Howard Kaplan, the project design specialist arrived each morning to inform us what was planned for the day. He also checked at the end of each day to determine the progress. Enrique Trejo, the foreman of the job, is a master of pavers and Saul, his assistant, worked non-stop with incredible effort. They did extra work to make sure everything was perfect. On a scale of one to ten the company is off the charts. We now have the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood. As a licensed painting contractor, I have worked with many floor covering contractors. Rise Above Flooring has worked with my company on several projects. I have personally been involved with Aaron's projects on multiple occasions and can say that the quality of his companies installations is far and above the work that I would want in my home or business. If you are looking for a hardwood installer that truly knows how to do an install and finish that you would be proud of for years to come, call them for an estimate first. New installs, tie in and repairs, geometric patterns and herringbone look stunning and I have been surprised with the finished floors after seeing what they had to start with on several jobs. Modern coating products have changed at a rapid pace for the painting and floor finishing business. Aaron's experience with this changing challenge is going to give you options that a less experienced contractor can't compare with. Rise Above does excellent trim, crown molding and base board installations on their jobs as well. They can perform prefinished floors, tile and stone work . I have high expectations for my customers homes as well as my own, That is why they have worked on my own home on multiple projects. Scott Warner Coast Brushworks Painting and Decorating

John and his workers did an outstanding job. They built a three-tiered stone retaining wall, installed french drains and an area of crushed basalt, planted and added irrigation. They were timely and responsive - a pleasure to work with. John also did some trouble-shooting of my irrigation system that involved replacing a valve and installing a new soaker line.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
