Chris showed up every time he said he would, gave exceptionally detailed quote information, then delivered the work exactly as he said he would. He even got it done a day faster than I expected. Chris does high-quality work and cares about what he does and I'd hire him again for more landscaping work.

Tony did an awesome job on my lawn. I had to replace my entire front lawn landscaping and he came out quickly, made sure the sprinklers were working and left a clean job site.

Purchased a gazebo and needed assistance with the assembly. Have no fear, Ninja Gazebo Assemblyman to save the day. Not only was the gazebo fully assembled in just over a day, it was also mounted to the deck, centered, and looked better than the picture on the box. What more could I ask for? Nothing it was perfect, beyond perfect in fact. The netting, location, and sturdiness was better than anything I could have done. A definite win in my book and someone I would count on again for large assembly jobs.

Jose came to the property and assessed. He was not intimidated by a most unruly weed situation, including a much in need of repair irrigation drip system. The front and rear yards are large. I am talking about no easy task. Once I accepted his reasonable estimate, he began the job. He knew what needed to be done, and he did it. I am very satisfied. This is going to be an ongoing effort and hopefully a lasting relationship. It is most difficult to find a gardener of this degree of knowledge and commitment Most anyone can walk behind a mower and command a weed walker. Jose’s Community Landscaping is so much more. Thanks, Thumbtack. Mac Caruso

Patricia's design eye beautifully refreshed our yard with new plants and grasses that integrated with the landscaping that was in situ and with gorgeous arrangements for all the planters. Patricia turned up when she said she would and did what she said she was going to do.

I am very pleased to have hired Adrian/AG Landscaping! Pros: hard-working, courteous, prompt with communicating back and forth, knowledgeable, efficient, reasonably priced and mindful of prices for items to be purchased. For special mention: Adrian seems to really care about plants, how they are treated and pruned, what's best for plant/tree health, soil and other many factors that go into being a real gardener in the context of other landscaping factors (hardscape, irrigation, etc.) The work is not yet completed, as it will require several work days. If yesterday's day #1 is a sample of the rest of the work, then I could not be more satisfied. Adrian listened to my description of the overall results I wanted and also to the specific items I wanted in the final result. He advised me on what he thought would not work and why, and, alternatively, on what would be good to do, which parts he could do and which ones would be best for other professionals. I know this process would not work for others, but it's perfect for me, because I am figuring out as I go the redesign of our landscaping. I will add to my review after the project is completed.

I couldn't be happier with my experience with Tom and Camarena Landscapes. Every part of the process was professional and pleasurable. My job was very small - create a drip irrigation system in two large raised beds. Notwithstanding, for the estimate Tom arrived precisely at the agreed upon time, explained exactly what needed to be done, and emailed me an estimate that same afternoon. We communicated back and forth via text and phone to discuss a few particulars, and when I asked Tom to include 2 additional deliverables in his original bid price, he gladly agreed. While the other landscapers who had bid said they would do the job alone, Tom brought two of his men and the job went quickly and painlessly. The work was executed flawlessly and with great creativity. For my next landscaping project I would unquestionably work with Tom Camarena again, and I give him my highest recommendation.

David was great- he was punctual and knowledgeable and offered suggestions when we needed them which was great. His work was reasonably priced and when we had some scheduling issues he made an effort to work it out which was appreciated. Now hopefully everything they did will continue to grow! We plan on using his services again for the next phase of our landscaping. Would recommend!

I can't say enough great things about the Martinez Landscaping team. Efren, the company's owner, is an absolutely wonderful person to work with. He and his team are incredibly professional and the quality of their work was fabulous. They completed a huge project in only three days, and they did so with precision and care. The value of the work was spot on with what we paid, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to work with Martinez Landscaping. You can be sure we will be referring this great company to others as well as continuing to work with them on future projects. Thank you so much, Martinez Landscaping! You guys are the best!!!

We have contracted with A Greener Tomorrow to do our Xeriscape Project. They are local which was important to us. Carmen has been very easy to work with, creating a design that incorporated the ideas of my wife and myself. She is professional and took time with us to work out the project. There was no pressure or pretentious attitude (which we experienced with other "landscape architects" we encountered. We just got underway with demo yesterday. So far so good!

I was a little skeptical since there were no reviews but once I met with Parrish, we were put at ease. He is very professional and was thorough in explaining every step. Their employees and owners have had many years of experience in landscaping so though their company is new, the people aren’t. Turfusion was fantastic from the initial consultation with Parrish to the work being completed by Leo and his crew. It literally took 5 days from the initial visit to get the work done and only 2 days to do the entire project. They even added a stone pathway to our front door for free and it wasn’t even in our initial plan. We couldn’t be happier with the work and will be hiring them again to landscape the front of our house. I will add photos later.

We want to thank you and your landscaping crew for an exceptional job on our very distressed backyard. You should get an award for this project. We are very satisfied with the results. Our tenants and neighbors are amazed at the transformation. The work was done in a timely manner. And, you successfully worked with our budget! You are a highly knowledgeable guy that does not cut corners. We highly recommend Cutting Edge for any project and will use Ryan and his crew again and have already referred them to friends and neighbors. Chuck & Kimi, City of Orange, CA

I echo the previous reviewer's notes on Derek. Not only did Derek do a great job, but he really helped me elevate my green thumb knowledge. His pricing was competitive and hisck tractor Jose was incredibly timely in executing the garden implementation and finishing the project. As a side, Derek himself was a pleasure to work with. Very cheery and pleasant. I highly recommend Derek.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

What's the best way to maintain your lawn?

Keeping a lawn lush and green requires consistent mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and more. If your lawn is particularly large, it may make sense to hire a full-service lawn care provider. Whether you take a DIY approach or bring in the experts, maintaining your lawn requires a range of tasks.

Plan to mow the lawn often, allowing it stay longer than may seem convenient — longer grass is healthier grass. The general rule is to cut off no more than a third of the grass blade. This helps prevent damage to the lawn as well as keeping weeds from taking root. It’s also important to remove any weeds, then prevent new ones from growing. In spring, consider spraying a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn to prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from sprouting from seed. During other seasons, broadleaf weeds like dandelions can be pulled by hand or sprayed with weed killers. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, allowing the sun to help dry the grass. Make sure to thoroughly soak the lawn so that the water penetrates several inches into the ground.

Lawn care also requires feeding; look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that include nitrogen. Some lawns also benefit from aeration, which creates small holes to let air, water and nutrients penetrate the grass roots. Although most homeowners can manage these tasks on their own, a full-service lawn care company can handle them on a regular schedule, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a beautiful lawn.

How do you look after your lawn?

Having a beautiful lawn doesn’t just happen by magic. A multi-pronged approach to lawn care will result in a healthy lawn that will have your neighbors green with envy. The national average price for multi-service lawn care ranges from $40 to $50. Whether you tackle the project yourself or hire a lawn care professional, looking after your lawn requires consistent work. A baseline of lawn care is keeping your grass mowed and your irrigation system working properly. Fertilizing plants and grasses, as well as trimming and pruning foliage, may promote the health of your plants and lawn. Many lawn care pros offer different packages with varying monthly fees depending on your lawn size and the services you desire. Here are a few examples of average lawn care prices:

  • 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot lawn: $60-$90 per month
  • 5,000-square-foot lawn or larger: $110-$150 per month.
    • Includes lawn maintenance, cleanups and irrigation repairs. The company trims shrubs, pulls weeds, blows out yard waste, fertilizes and does minor irrigation repairs.
  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
  • 8,001- to 15,000-square-foot property: $35 per week/$140 per month.
  • 15,001- to 20,000-square-foot property: $40 per week/$160 per month.
    • Includes mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
