Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

My first time using this service gave me hope that there are still responsive house cleaning services available. This was my last effort looking for a reliable house cleaning service and it came true. I am keeping then and actually scheduled the next appointment date before leaving.

The worst cleaning service there is. I was moving into a new house and had them clean my house. I was quoted 4.5 then they called me and asked for an addition hour. I ended up paying close to $350 for nothing! My house looked like it hadn’t been touched. Save your money and go else where. When I complained they offered to come back for an hour and clean the places they missed. I agreed and I never heard from them again. Pictures I loaded will show what I mean.

I hired Valley Cleaning Team for a move in cleaning of my new house. They explained in detail what servives they provide and gave me a reasonable estimate. They made my 5 bedroom 3 bathroom home sparkle! My mother is a house cleaner so I'm a stickler for detailed work. They did not miss a thing. The faucets, blinds, and all shelves we spotless. They were also very kind and professional. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a cleaning service. I unfortunately don't have before photos, but the after photos speak for themselves.

I just had THE best house cleaning experience ever with Emely House Cleaning! Yesterday, I had the most wonderful crew of three professionals complete a really deep cleaning after several months of messy remodeling. They arrived right on time and got right to work, checking with me frequently to be sure that I was satisfied with what they did. They moved everything around, then put it back exactly where it belonged. This ensured that they cleaned behind furniture and didn't miss a spot. They vacuumed all my upholstered furniture and even my dog beds!!! They were kind, polite and considerate. I have already scheduled my appointment to have them come back in several months!!

They brought 3 people in for a deep cleaning of my house 1,635 sq. ft. We had just removed some walls and added laminate floors so there was dust and dirt everywhere. They came in asked me what I needed done and got right to work. They were all nice and very informative, they did our whole house in 2.5 hours which is awesome since they did so much detailed cleaning. I would definitely hire them again.

We had some flooring replaced at the house and we hired a crew for a deep clean at a fairly large home (3,400 square ft). Can’t say enough about the great, thorough work we received. Highly recommend their work!

This was the first time working with them. Was very responsive online and via text. Came in earlier than scheduled, they walked through our home and gave us an estimate of the time. Finished the house as estimated. Home was very clean and did not smell full of chemicals when all said and done. Kitchen was cleaned very well - especially our stove/oven. Patio doors and shower door were patchy and could have been better but rest were good. Likely to hire them again.

Requested a deep cleaning & even sent tons of pics ahead of time. Daniel was very nice as was the team who came the first day but right after they left, I saw they had not even touched my master shower walls at all. So after asking a few times, Daniel eventually agreed to send two other gals the next week to do the rest of it for free. Which I greatly appreciated. And to sweeten the deal I said i would pay them if they could clean my fireplace bricks while they were here. Well on that day, less than 2 hrs into it, the one gal in charge was asking for their payment so I checked the fireplace but the entire outside hearth was untouched, to which they responded by complaining that it would never come up anyway, and to which I responded by promptly demonstrating how that was not true. (this team does this alot btw, saying they "tried their best but we can't get it clean it so just pay us cos we're leaving now" but usually the truth is that the items are not even touched at all.) So as they began reworking the hearth (which began looking amazing with just the bare minimum), I checked the main concern which was of course the shower and def more of it was done but the soap shelves were still completely untouched. And this is a small shower btw. So I very politely showed the gal but she just got angry with me and told me she had "scrubbed enough" so I showed her how the dirt was easily scratchable with my fingernail & said "I am sorry but I'm disabled & trying to sell this house ntm Daniel already agreed to get this clean for me...and this is the second trip" But she stood her ground and then said "but those shelves are broken!" And yes the shelves do have a crack in one place at the bottom but not at the shelving level. So I said "So you are telling me you won't clean it bc they're cracked at one part?" To which she snidely responded. "Yes." I was now so shocked as I didn't know how to respond to this. Then she added, "Ma'am if you are selling this house, you should just get those shelves replaced!! Not ask me to clean them!!" And she repeated this a couple of times & continued refusing to do it! Also, not that I have to say so, but since my husband died, I have already spent $1000's that I don't have on fixing this house up so me and my kids can move out of California bc we can no longer afford to live here. Therefore I'm sorry but I have no more cash to fix those silly shower shelves bc of "a crack" at the bottom. However, they are not dangerous nor difficult to clean at all. But by now, bc she had made me feel so completely awful btw she griping about everything and insulting me instead of helping, I decided to pay her just to get her & her negative energy out of my home, as it wasn't worth it to be forced into defending myself for what I wanted (and had contracted) them to clean for me. And after she had left I did feel much better. But unfortunately, I still have a pretty dirty shower and don't know what I did wrong. I mean, am I missing something here, bc I still can't have real estate pics done yet even tho I tried to get help with housecleaning thru this app, and even tho I explained well ahead of time what I needed?

Jessica arrived a few minutes before the time she said she would be arriving to my surprise. She asked for me to show her around the house to get a full idea of what she was doing and even asked questions to what my preferences where. They did an amazing job and I appreciate that she expressed how I can let her know what I want to her to be detailed in or if I feel she missed something to just bring it to her attention so she won’t pass it up next time. I’m very satisfied and have hired her to come do bi-weekly Cleaning. Highly recommend. Thanks Jessica for helping this tired momma out
