I had never done any renovations before, and I was concerned about working with a contractor. I am so glad that I chose Excel Construction to remodel my kitchen and bathroom. Eyal and the workers were a pleasure to work with. The main things that I appreciated while working with them were: - They paid attention to my needs, my thoughts, my ideas, and my vision and worked within my budget (which was the most important thing in this remodeling). - Eyal with his office staff made sure to pull all permits for the work and they just informed me when they got them or about any stage of the permit (other builders who quoted me said they did not pull permits) - Eyal made sure to spend a lot of time consulting me and explaining me before the remodeling began. This included many discussions on layouts, appliances/fixtures, designs, what to expect..... -Eyal scheduled their crew and subcontractors. They were able to completely renovate my kitchen and bathroom in 9 weeks. They worked quickly and efficiently. -They paid attention to all the details even the small ones and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction. - All the materials that they used, were selected by me and they used high quality raw materials. Overall, I had a good experience working with Excel Construction and would not hesitate to use them again.

I was looking for a handyman for the longest time. I had hired others after the work was done someone had to re-fix what was done wrong. How I know this in all my past years I have hired Handymen to do work around my house. I have seen a lot of shady and shoddy workmanship from others. I contacted John thru Thumbtack to work on my house which I was extremely pleased with his work. No one and I mean no one can compare to John. From the first moment I saw John I knew this man has great knowledge. His persona his intelligence to details, his well spoken well versed. I have never seen anyone like him before. I had John repair my electrical outlets which were broken my plugs would not stay in. I paid to have my electrical done which he found the wiring inside the plugs were done incorrectly. Once he opened up the plugs he found bare wires which I had mentioned to him I had been smelling burned smell. The handyman that did the work before had wired the plugs wrong with it shorting out my items I would plug in. John went around checking every out let finding the same things. He rewired everything for me. I had him repair my drain system in my kitchen sink found out the water lines were had been leaking and the drain lines were installed wrong. He took the time to explained in detail and showed me the correct drains that need to be installed. My french doors were not closing properly after John took a look at it he fixed with great ease which others wanted over $300.00 to fix. I cant believe Johns work. I have so much work to be done to my house I will continue using John for all my needs. If you who you can trust let John be your guide he will not do you wrong. I love his workmanship. Money well spent. Kate M.

First time working with Cal Engeneers, I specifically worked with Khalil, and Lazar, they did an incredible job. We had a one bedroom unit that has not been renovate din over 8 years, they came in, and had the whole place redone in about 11 days. Whole new laminate flooring put in, carpets removed, walls painted, popcorn Celing removed, and many cabinets and closets repainted. Essentially remodeled the entire 1 bedroom apartment. They came in under budget for what I expected and did a lot more than asked. Such as refinish the bathtub and clear out grout. very fast work, always on time, easy to reach and very fair prices. and an over all excellent experience. Just handed them another job in another property.

Scope - replace hallway floors (due to slight flooding/leak); gut reno one of the bathrooms; customize hallway closet(s). Pros: - Contractor was prompt to respond and quick to commence the job - Joe and his team are very professional - Quality of work is good - It is apparent that State Wide has a Subject Matter Expert for every aspect of the reno (different folks for plumbing, carpentry, tiles, flooring). Most likely 3rd parties but pros nonetheless. - flexible payment structure (also accepts CCs) Cons: - Execution was very slow; perhaps Joe's team was focused on bigger projects (it was mentioned on a few occasions) and it was apparent that our reno was not prioritized. - there were items that should have been spec'd out and ordered as to avoid delays (e.g. floor should have been matched on day1, subway tiles etc..). Numerous days were wasted as the team was waiting on the materials - my biggest frustration with the reno was the lack of empathy and accountability. Excuses/justifications were presented instead of just owning up to the significant delay (work was supposed to be executed in 10-14 days max; it took 30 days). It would have been completely fine if the delay was communicated properly instead of us hounding the team. Overall, we are happy with the renovation.

The Egal Construction team was one of the most down-to-earth, honest contractors I've ever hired for a job in our office building. When we ran into an issue, they jumped on fixing it in an impossibly timely manner. Five stars, 10/10, all of the accolades I can give. Hire these guys!

I worked with Joseph on my home remodel. He was very accommodating. I had many special request that he made sure where completed with the most utmost attention to detail. They gutted my kitchen, my bathroom and and remodeled my kitchen and renovated my kitchen. He put in a beautiful tile surround on the shower with a custom glass surround. He made awesome recommendations on where to choose all the finishes. His cabinet maker is a true artist and they made it all custom. Many ammenities he thought of to make this a perfect custom kitchen I will enjoy forever. The Caesarstone counter tops and tile backsplash are beautifully installed. The led under cabinet lights were a great recommendation. The tradesmen who worked on the house were very friendly and accommodating. They left a clean jobsite EVERY day. Overall this was the most pleasant remodel I have ever had done and this is the 5th house I had remodeled.

I cannot say enough good things about Guy and his crew. Amazing job from start to finish. Guy took our small idea and turned it into a masterpiece! He was on time and on budget! Two things that I thought were unheard of when it comes to remodeling! Guy was patient and responsive and answered every question without judgement or delay. Construction Owl will most certainly be our first call when we begin our next home remodeling project.

I had a good impression from the first time I met with Daniel and Ron from Curtis Construction Services. Could not have gone any better. Daniel was straight forward and reasonable. He showed up every day at the agreed upon time. I admit it makes me a little crazy when people are late but that never happened. I was always told what was going to happen next and at what time. I lucked out when I picked some sile stone - they had a piece in the color i wanted in the yard! I went and took a look and it was perfect and things just flew after that. The guys were great.. Very professional, nice guys and they left everything spotless. I would hire Daniel and Curtis Construction again without hesitation. It was the smoothest remodeling project I've ever had in my home.

Magen and her crew were amazing! They renovated our entire house; kitchen, two full baths, one half bath, new interior/exterior paint, refinished hardwood floors and installed new hardwood in kitchen to blend perfectly with existing hardwood. I made a few changes to the original plan, and Magen was extremely accommodating! I could not be happier with the end result. We ended up needing to complete the project sooner than anticipated and Magen sent reinforcements to finish everything up, again EXTREMELY accommodating. Their quality of work is wonderful, especially their tile work since we choose some more challenging patterns and tiles to work with. Will definitely use them again.

We been referred to Smart Construction Consultants by my in lows, we interview Ron and the way he listen to our needs and the new floor plan he recommended we felt he knows what he is talking about and in good hands. Our goal was to renovate our bathroom to create larger space with removing the structural load bearing wall dividing between our living room and kitchen with painting the remodeling areas and re-stucco our house exterior and we had a very tight budget, Ron help us to fit in to our budget the work and came with few ideas that we saved good amount of money. What we really both liked besides the professional work was the punctuality on timing (always show up as promised and worked every day with no excuses) and always keeping our home clean with a great consideration of our family living in the house while remodeling take place. If you considering to remodel your home do yourself a big favor and meet with Ron.

GIM installed a new cool roof by gaf shingles and a solar system for my home. They helped me to pick out the proper shingle color and even tried to match the panels to look good with the new roof. The solar system was top quality American made panels and it came with system monitoring. All the pipes on my wall were painted to match the home. It was great knowing one company took care of all my needs. Give GIM a try if your looking for home improvement needs! Thanks team!

While my request was a bit simple (hanging an indoor hammock from a beam), Luigi has no problem taking on the job! He arrived promptly for the estimation and installation, and showed up with a plethora of tools. Luigi even came up with a creative approach to ensuring that the piece was secured appropriately.

Just want to say I am so impressed with Moriah Remodeling. I was working with Eran S. He is my project manager. and with his crew. You couldn't ask for anyone better. The attention Eran gives to detail is helpful and refreshing. We are doing a complete renovation of our kitchen, powder room, flooring, family room, two bathroom and laundry room. We are so pleased with the them, they are always on time, protect your flooring, furniture. ... everything is so organized and surprisingly we were able to use their company portal. Today it is very hard to find a reliable company and we would defiantly will recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
