Having recently been brought in on a residential project as one of Debbie's Creative Spaces Interior Design team members, we were very impressed with her warm and affable nature as well as her professionalism and creativity. The job ran like clock work thanks to her fabulous organizational skills. Working with Ms. Adelman of Creative Spaces Interior Design, Inc. was such a refreshing and positive experience that we hope to become a permanent part of her team of Craftsman and Artisans.

I hired Lisa Kay with All In Place, Inc. to re-organize my overwhelming home office space full of un-filed paperwork and furniture that wasn't really useful. I really wanted to make my office filing system more functional and even find some space to fit a chair and a half in my office to double as a guest area. She more than exceeded my expectations. Now I am organized and love working out of my home office each and every day. She helped the furniture I really needed in that space work. At first I was nervous as to how she was approaching the filing and organizing, but she is the expert and gave me a new perspective on just how to look at being organized and letting go of what doesn't work anymore in a space. I would definitely hire her again! Loving All In Place!

I met with Christine for interior design work and was incredibly impressed. She has a wonderful sense of style and was able to capture my personality perfectly with her design recommendations. She has an attention to detail and was very generous with her time -- coming over multiple times to ensure the items were just right. She acted like it was more than just a "design job" but really important to her that I was pleased with the transformation. She is a wonderful decorator and I highly recommend her!!!! She is also a jack of all trades and even acted as a handy-man to remove chair cushions to take for upholstery and install a new light fixture!

George and his team did a kitchen, laundry room and dining room remodel as well as our electrical panel and plumbing for us and it turned out great! We went from a 70's kitchen that was completely gutted to a beautiful up-to-date kitchen. George and his team knew what they were doing and did it well. Thank you George, Danny, Greg, Edgar and Gilbert! Patty M.

This is our first time hiring on Thumbtack and the experience has been wonderful! Josh is very patient and willing to work with us on every detail. He definitely has an eye for design and his price is very affordable. The house sold within two months and we couldn't be happier. We already have another referral to send his way. Thank you for all your good work!

Words cannot suffice in terms of how Dar has truly blessed our family! I interviewed at least 5 interior designers and Dar’s level of experience, attention to detail, and referrals far exceeded anyone else. I greeted him with a hug when I first saw him because he has this joyful magnetic glow that makes you feel like he is a really good friend. Dar is very punctual; he shows up exactly at the time he gives you and he does not rush you. He is knowledgeable, very attentive, and incredibly patient (we would sometimes have multiple hour meetings). He worked around our schedule with our little ones and never complained about the long hours he put in or how meticulous we were in the designing phase. We enjoyed working with Dar so much that we hired him to stage our house, which put our house over the top in a competitive market. I cannot wait to bring him on board to give our new home the “Dar touch”!

I needed to furnish and decorate a 500 square foot studio condo from scratch in 30 days. Janet surpassed my expectations and I couldn't be happier with the end result. This was my first time using Thumbtack and an interior designer. I work and travel a lot, so I needed someone who would take care of everything - sending options, ordering items, as well as delivery, assembly and installation. Even though it was a small space, this was not an easy project. Janet fully understood my style preferences, budget and logistics. She meticulously reworked the floor plan when I changed my mind or when an item was unavailable. She was constantly contacting vendors to answer my 100s of questions and continually updated me on where we were in the budget. To top it off, she fully managed the complicated delivery/installation logistics with an outside company that she found (and was there when everything was delivered/assembled)! Janet completely transformed an empty space into a beautiful bedroom, living room, work area and patio that I adore. I fully recommend Janet's interior design services and am thankful for her excellent work.

Tracy Murdock is a true professional and a master of her craft. She designed my entire 4000 ft. Malibu beach home (which Tracy, in fact, found for me). Her reputation and network within Malibu helped make my purchase, remodeling, design and ultimately my move-in a smooth and pleasant experience from start to finish. I highly recommend Tracy and she also still currently manages my properties which I lease.

Design & Order helped me with the Interior Design projects for my home and I am SO happy with the results! I have to admit, I was a bit stubborn with listening to some of their Design ideas but once I let go and trusted their expertise things came together beyond my expectations. I would definitely recommend these ladies to anyone looking for design help.

Chloe was absolutely fantastic to work with! She was the first interior designer I've ever worked with and she made the experience so much fun. She has such a keen creative eye and knows all of the "under the radar" shops and markets to pick up eclectic and interesting pieces that are truly special. My husband and I moved into our house about a year ago and I had mixed some of my existing furniture with some new pieces I found on my own. Everything felt really disjointed and awkward. I hired Chloe to help me tie everything together and make it feel like home. She helped me find the most beautiful vintage art that spoke to me (and was VERY reasonably priced) and helped me layer my existing furniture with some new interesting pieces to give our home an overall more lived-in, warm and eclectic vibe. She never pressured me to buy anything out of my price range. She was even able to get shop owners to allow me to bring furniture and artwork home before buying to let it "live in the space" to make absolutely sure that it was something that my husband and I both loved. Can't say enough good things... if you're looking to create a beautiful space to call your own while having so much fun doing it, hire Chloe!

You will love working with Devlyn. From the timely, concise contract through the finishing touches, Devlyn Gorby is top notch! In the last six months, Devlyn has helped design and decorate two properties for us; one an older recently purchased home for my son and the other a small rental apt in Burbank. We are so happy with these beautiful, highly functional homes. The older home was transformed into a stunning modern property in less than two months including wall, ceiling and window treatment, lighting, art and all the furnishing. My little apt now has sleeping for four and dining for six. I reached out to Devlyn after twice purchasing a couch that wouldn't fit though the hall. If I'd started with her I would have saved more money! But I saved money anyway because Devlyn found sale furniture for me as well as a custom made reclaimed wood table. She also repurposed some of the furniture I had. Devlyn is a master in the use of color, lighting and proportion. She is also a great communicator and knows how to "make her client happy". She never dictates but draws out your ideas and preferences. I have high hopes that I will have the pleasure of working with Devlyn again one day and I'm sure that once you've worked with her you will feel the same.

Mary Kate has the unique capability of taking a vague description of a concept and turning it into exactly what her clients desire and envisioned. I was blown away at her ability to create exactly what I was looking for with such a modest budget. Exceptional design, professionalism and value. I would recommend Mary Kate to everyone I know looking for interior design.

I worked with Emma on my mid-century/Art Deco large 1-bedroom apt 3 years ago when I was living in Los Angeles. She did an amazing job figuring out my taste and the mood and functionality I was looking for then. Although she got me some ottomans that I was reluctant on at first, they quickly grew on me when I realized how convenient they were as I often entertained, and that without compromising on my style. Now I'm back in New York and got married so we went back to her for our condo. Through her e-design service she managed to provide us with floor plans options, a shopping list and referrals to painters and flooring installers for our kitchen update. I'm really excited to see everything coming together!

I personally value the time and effort that Qastic team invested in delivering a delicate, and beautiful interior design for my apartment. Living in NY can be suffocating at times, and with my personal life style that orients around partying and working hard, my apartment have developed to be an ultimate safe haven for me and my friends! On the other hand, their precise focus and concise on-site visits helped a lot to assure me of the fact that they meet every deadline they define in the beginning of the project. I would say working with Qastic is a safe an pleasant investment that you would appreciate after the work is done.

What can I say! I Hired Staged and Sold. First you actually get an interior designer who designs the space. They don’t just throw things into the home. They plan it out based on the layout and color schemes that attract buyers. They were on time and took 2 hours to stage! I had offers right after we had photos and they helped get my home sold!

About

I began my business 30 years ago with the dream of making my customers' homes look spectacular. Ever since then, I have been giving people great deals on the products that we carry and changing lives as I go. Making a costumer's home beautiful is my dream and dreams of others who have had a vision for it. I locally work in Los Angeles, but I always go the extra mile for a costumer who wants his/her home to be redone in the way he/she wants it done. My business is not like any other home designer businesses out there. I talk to each one of my costumers and get to know them on a friendly and professional basis. I always give the best advice and prices on anything we carry. If you need an item customer made I can do it and make it happen ASAP. Give me a try and you'll be glad you made the right choice.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
