Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can I trust a locksmith?

You can find a trustworthy locksmith with some research. The best way to start is with an online search of top-rated locksmiths near you and read the customer reviews thoroughly. Positive reviews (and ratings) can indicate trustworthiness, but you should also look up the locksmith’s credentials. Many states require locksmiths to be licensed, so look up the rules in your state before you hire anyone.

Very professional! As good as it gets!!! I needed to get all of the locks on my property changed/rekeyed on a Monday morning urgently but didn't want to be in a position to hire an emergency locksmith. I found G N Lock and Key who gave me a great price and was able to come by 8:30 so I could get to work on time. He arrived right on time and was very nice and pleasant. I immediately felt comfortable working with him. He re-keyed my home, mailbox, plus replaced a lock on my gate. I will hire him in a heartbeat in the future for any locksmith needs.

Henry was superb. Super punctual and very professional. He worked swiftly, helped me set up the lock app and then insisted on cleaning up. I’m really high on first impressions so I will pretty much only call them whenever I need a locksmith from now on.

I submitted a request to install a new lock on my apartment mailbox. Within 5 minutes of responding to their quote I received a phone call from a contractor who was on their way. The locksmith who helped me out was fast, fair, and went the extra mile to get the job done right.

SoCal offered and completed a professional service at a great price. I received a bid the same day I solicited a quote and they were able to show up the next day and perform the installation. The locksmith was on time, courteous, and professional. He completed the job quickly and for the exact price quoted. We even had a newer Schlage keyless lock installed and it was no problem. Highly recommend this company.

I had Robert’s team come out to fix my front door handle which kept falling off. We were rushed when fixing it the first time and the handle became loose again. I let them know and Robert immediately responded and sent out another repairman and even refunded me for the work. I couldn’t be happier with the professionalism and customer service. You are in good hands working with H.R. Locksmith!!!

H.R. Locksmith Service are the ONLY ones you should call with lock problems, installing locks or, like in my case, REINSTALLING a very bad install from another company. Robert was amazing with advice and info even before they were hired. He saw the mess I was left with and wanted to help. And help he and his crew did! My door is beautiful again. I’m including photos of the before and after. The first 2 are after, the last 2 are before. Beautiful work, thank you!

This business does not deserve even 1 star. I had an emergency that requires a locksmith so I gave them a shot and ARIEL increased the price he quoted me by $20 once the job was completed stating the original price he gave me was only an “estimate”. He charged me $140 for a mailbox key. The entire mailbox only cost $80 which I would have done but I had mail locked inside that I needed. I was upset that he did this but he offered to give me a discount the next time I needed a locksmith because of the “misunderstanding”. So fast forward to the present, I contacted him again to see if he would program 3 gates remotes for me and his quote was so beyond absurd that I felt compelled to warn others about this predator. His quote was over $800 for a 2 minute job. There’s a YouTube video I am providing for reference. The remotes are literally less than $13 on Amazon, screen shots of his quote and the amazon remotes are also provided. I believe in second chances and support small businesses but I DO NOT SUPPORT PREDATORS. Do you homework and do yourself and your wallet a favor and stay away from this guy!!!

DO NOT USE THESE GUYS. They OVERCHARGE. 101 Locksmith went out to a building I own to fix a wooden gate that was not closing tightly. I was not present so they quoted me $125 over the phone as they would have to replace the striker, hinges, etc. The tenant, who was present and watched them was shocked at the price. They were done in 4 minutes. When they called to "repair" another gate, they said the same thing was wrong and that it would be another $125 to repair. I asked them to tell me exactly what they did on the first gate. They claimed it was "hard work." When I asked for details they stated they replaced the striker, hinges and added wood. When I told them I was going to call the tenant that watched them repair his gate to make sure, that is when the truth came out. They admitted to adding a couple wood spacers and new screws, nothing else. Hence the reason it took 4 minutes to repair. I then explained that I felt like I was being taken as the job took 4 minutes and only spacers and screws were used for parts. Noam's partner then tried to compare himself to a doctor (to justify his extremely high price). I explained to him a doctor and a person putting in a couple wood spacers and screws are two totally different things. He then tried to convince me to do the other gate repair for $100. When I wasn't having it, he then offered $75. I said absolutely not. I found out later they went to the tenant that watched them and said "shame on you, unprofessional." Clearly they were the boneheads who were unprofessional, trying to pull a scam. Oh how I can't wait to see the property security cameras! I will never use this group again. BEWARE.
