How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How do you plan for a carpet installation project?

Start by researching your options and figuring out the following:

  • What kind of carpet do you want?
  • How big are the rooms where you plan to install the carpet?
  • What type of backing is required?
  • Does the subfloor need to be prepared?
  • Do you need to make any repairs to your flooring?
  • When do you want the installation process done?
  • What is your budget?
  • Who is the best company or contractor in your area for the project?

Next, remove furniture from the room and give it a deep clean. Hire contractors to remove the current flooring if necessary. Schedule your carpet installer to have access to the room for as many days as they need for the project.

How do you measure for carpet installation?

The first step is to measure your room’s length and width, adding 2-3 three inches to each dimension to account for doorways and  trimming. Measure additional sections, like the other part of an L-shaped room. Multiply the length times width to get the overall area of carpeting. When measuring for stairs, make sure to measure all the way around the nosing of the stairs to account for extra carpeting needed.

How long does carpet installation take?

You can expect carpet installation to take anywhere between several hours and a day. The length of the job depends on the scope of the project, room size, the type of carpet being installed and the condition of the work space. If your carpet crew needs to move furniture or work around other contractors, expect the project to take longer. Odd-shaped rooms with nooks and carpeted closets will also add time.

What is tackless carpet installation?

Tackless carpet installation (or stretch-in installation) involves installing carpeting without the use of tacks. With this method, your flooring contractor will place the carpet over separate carpet cushions and secure it in place with a power stretcher, according to the Carpet and Rug Institute.

Fred is great. Friendly, professional, and quick to respond to my inquiries. Background: I had a very overwhelming carpet issue - my landlord tried to clean the carpets, but the person (aka friend) he hired didn't do it properly. The carpet was left sitting wet for 5 days, which meant that the carpet smelled strongly of mildew. It was disgusting. I then paid for the carpets to be re-cleaned, but that didn't help as the carpets were already ruined. This is where Fred came in. I put in a request for carpet installation thinking I may have to pay for the carpets to be swapped if my landlord didn't give in. Fred gave me a reasonable quote over the phone (should I choose to change the carpets) and also spent time advising me on how to approach the conversation with my landlord. This was super helpful and gave me confidence to push for what I knew was right - swapping the mildewy carpets for fresh ones. I didn't end up hiring Fred as my landlord finally agreed to change the carpets, and used another friend of his for the carpet installation. That said, Fred went above and beyond to help me in this stressful situation and for that I'm super thankful. Thanks Fred!

We had two bedrooms that needed carpeting. From first contact to actual installation, the process was done in less than 24 hours. Fred and two assistants also helped move furniture at no extra charge, which was a big plus; currently I'm on medical leave and could not have done this myself. We are remodeling and the baseboards had already been finished. After installation no touch-up was required. Fred and crew picked up the new carpet and hauled away the old carpeting and padding as well as a few odd boxes. The rooms look great now with the brand new carpet. Fred is loquacious but interesting and informative to talk with, whether its carpets or not. Bottom line: GREAT Experience, GREAT results! It was easy to do business and we got professional results in less than 24 hours. He wasn't the cheapest bid but we got more than what we paid for in value added extras and peace of mind so I can focus on my health and not carpeting. I highly recommend Fred Thayer Carpets.

I found Alfonso by doing a Google search for carpet installation in San Francisco, and he came up through Thumbtack and had good reviews. I spoke with him on the phone, and he came in for an estimate the very next day which might've been a Wed or Thurs. He came in Monday with all the necessary materials and equipment, and was done with the job by Tuesday afternoon. He was quick, efficient, and his assistant Angy was very pleasant to work with. The office loves the quality of the carpet! I would refer Alfonso's Carpet and use them again.

I am so happy with our recent carpet installation! Alfonso came to our house and gave us a great quote right on the spot. Angy was always available by text to answer any questions I had. She scheduled the work quickly as we were under a tight deadline because of other work being done on our home and was great every step of the way. Our installers, Solomon and Ricardo, were fantastic. They were very polite and worked quickly, neatly, and efficiently. When it’s time for new carpet, I will definitely call Alfonso again.

We ended up having to cancel our project but working with Hals Carpet & Vinyl's contact was a pleasure and I knew I would have had an excellent installation. I selected work quality so they wouldn't get penalized for not doing the job or for someone thinking they weren't craftsman.

Fred & team were a pleasure to work with! Prior to installation day, Fred was able to help us identify the right carpet for us, taking into account both aesthetics and cost. On the day of installation, the entire team was extremely efficient, helpful, kind and professional. Additionally, they managed to complete our entire apartment in just a day; an operational feat! Overall, Fred & his team did a phenomenal job and I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat.
