Travis was the first to call me to provide a quick consultation over the phone for the repairing of our mailbox. We aren't much of handymen, so we opted in for Travis's skillsets, whose reputation, work quality, and professionalism were impeccable. He arrived promptly to repair the mailbox (even though I was not home) and followed up with the completion notice to get the pay situated. I will definitely be utilizing services again as I was 100% impressed with the timing and quality. Thanks again!

Jerry was great. We had a bedroom painted and it ended up taking longer than planned, and Jerry was willing to stay to complete the job rather than returning the following day. We would definitely use him again for home repair projects.

My project consisted of 6 or 7 items that needed handyman repair from a Home Inspection Report. I selected Bob based on his plumbing background but he was proficient in all the tasks and found answers to how to fix if he did not know. He was diligent, detailed oriented and made sure all items were completed correctly and efficiently. It is hard to find someone willing to go into a crawl space and replace insulation and he did this awful job cheerfully!!

All communication leading up to the job and the first preliminary meeting was clear and concise. They worked around my budget and made me feel confident along the all along the whole process. The job was done efficiently until there was a small incident with a small panel window on the side of our house. It was after they left that we noticed it. I brought it up and without dispute they were there the next morning with glass to replace the broken one. They apologized profusely and again left me satisfied with their work. I would definitely recommend them back to do more work at my home.

Studio loft cleaning. These ladies were very thorough and worked with natural cleaning solutions that I had at home. I was working from home that day but they were hardly noticeable. They are like the fairy cleaning godmothers!

I contacted JJ via Thumbtack to ask about painting the interior of our home. Well, I got very lucky as I quickly found out that JJ was the right guy for the job! He is the kind of guy who knows how to get just about anything done when it comes to home improvement and/or repair. From electrical work, to plumbing, to dry wall repair, JJ helped us complete several projects in our home in addition to painting the interior. He made many great suggestions/recommendations from paint color to ideas to help modernize and improve the aesthetics of our home. He was very straightforward and clear with the cost of our project and about the kind of paint he uses and how long he anticipated it would take. All of the painters working for JJ were friendly, courteous, professional and showed up on time. His team was flexible and able to work with our schedule. The interior painting job turned out absolutely beautiful. We loved how clean they worked. They took time to cover everything that was not to be painted, protecting the fixtures, flooring/carpeting and windows. Their attention to detail shows - with the clean edge lines and complete surface coverage everywhere. For their pride in the work, their professionalism and the outstanding results I recommend JJ Doane and his crew. This was a great experience from start to finish!

John and Sarah are great and genuine individuals. Out of all the contractors we looked at John had the best design options. They built an eye lid over our side door., pergola in the the front of the house to get the front depth, trim around the windows and even shutters. Their attention to details was excellent and they really wanted to do a great job. Which they did. John even keep checking in with us to make sure we liked what he was doing. HIRE THEM! I will again!

We were in need of re-roofing our historical office building. We had many challenges including age of the building, complexity of the roof and building insulation issues. We did our research and because we wanted to maintain the authentic look of our cedar shake roofing, increase our insulating value and NEVER re-roof again, we called the metal experts at True Green Roofing Solutions. Their response to our needs was professional, timely and very informative. We chose a stone coated shake roof by Gerard Roofing Technologies and received a beautiful roof at a fair price. We love the look of the new roof and are comforted knowing we don’t have to worry about fire or replacement. The installers were true craftsmen and met our every need. True Green Roofing gets our highest stamp of approval and appreciation! -J.Colvin – Reno, NV

This saved me money and I really appreciate his honesty and integrity. He is great !!!

Tiffany is a Housecleaner/Handywoman. I live out of state and needed someone to not only clean my mother's home on a regular basis, but also to get rid of the extensive amount of black mold in her shower. The mold was so bad we thought we would need to replace the entire shower. Tiffany did an amazing job and got rid of all the mold. Not only does Tiffany do excellent work, she is also trustworthy, kind and considerate. There are not many Housecleaner's as talented as Tiffany.

Our first experience with Troy was in 2009 when he worked on our bedroom extension and remodel of the master bath at our home in Grand Terrace, CA. The entire job took about 6 weeks as we had to remove a patio and deck in the process. From start to finish, Troy was professional in his work and very easy to talk to and make decisions with. He did an excellent job with the framing and roofing as well as the installation of new bathroom fixtures and tile work, both in the tub area and the flooring. If there was something we questioned or asked to have done differently (i.e., taking back a bathtub to replace it with a larger, soaking tub), Troy was always accommodating and happy to do what we wanted. When that project was completed, Troy framed and installed a new deck and sidewalk in our backyard.Over the next four years, we had more projects that we called Troy for help with and he was always ready and willing to come take a look, give a bid, and tackle the work. We had him install attic fans in the house, make and install shutters on the front windows, and paint our house. The work was always done to our satisfaction and we miss being able to call him for work we'd like to have done as he is no longer in southern CA.We highly recommend Troy Malley as a professional handyman whose work is exemplary. My husband and I rented an older home in order to give our almost two year old son more room to play. The house was terribly outdated and had bad paint, old appliances and carpeting everywhere, including the bathrooms and kitchen. It left a lot to be desired. We hired Noe based on seeing his previous work in another home. He repainted the walls for us flawlessly and finished all the trims by hand. We were grateful and even more impressed by his tile work. He tore up ALL the carpeting in our home and replaced most of it with tile. His work was very precise and he is clearly someone who takes pride in his craft. He also replaced the appliances, sanded and stained the hardwood floors (which were hidden under the ugly carpet in a few rooms), painted the baseboards, replaced a wall radiator and cleaned up all the debris and trash from the remodel. It took him about a week to do all the work himself, the job was priced fairly and the work was very high quality. We would definitely hire him again and recommend Noe to family and friends. My only thought for improvement would be for him to create a website for the company. That way we could easily direct people to his site for all their home improvement needs.

Dago was prompt to give an estimate and very personable. He removed an old window on the second story and replaced it with a very heavy new one. He did this on the afternoon of the day he gave the bid. I couldn't be happier with the work and will highly reccomend him to my friends.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
