Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Very professional. Overpriced for the work he did. I asked him about the cracking on the wood and he said because of the heat but it hasn't even been a week. Landscaping maybe but not any patio work. My patio was very poorly done. I have another patio I want done but never with this guys. I asked if he is gonna fixed it but no more respond. I would t recommend.

Abel and his crew were prompt, easy to talk to, and honest in his services. Willing to work around my schedule. Abel was the only one to call me back. After selecting upwards of 20 landscapers. I hired him for one project and when he was done I liked the work he and his crew did so I hired him to do another project for me. I will definitely recommend and use him again.

Benito was the only landscaper who responded to our Thumbtack request. What a surprise! I didn't need a second or third estimate. He gave us an extremely reasonable estimate, and his work was impeccable. I hired him to lay cement, plant trees, and spread decorative rock. Some of the slats in my fence were blown out after the very wet and windy winter here in Stockton. Benito offered to fix my fence for not charge. It is not my nature to take advantage of contractors, so I gave him a "nice" tip to cover the work on the fence. The point I am making is this is the quality of person you will be hiring.

Benito not only completed our backyard landscaping, but he went above and beyond to add little touches that really make a big difference. For example, instead of just setting aside an area for my garden, he built a raised bed that is beautiful. Our yard went from being a bare lot with weeds to a place where we can be proud to invite friends and family. Our yard now has a patio, grass, a raised gardening bed, and an easy to maintain rock border. All of this would be enough for a good rating, but even more impressive - this was all done in just 3 days! I'm very happy with the results.

We just had a great experience with Benito-starting with the fact that he showed up when he said he would! He also gave us a very good advise while we was thinking just to replace with grass for our front yard. It turned out very nice with some rock in between the grass and walkway. That has been hard to find with my recent experiences with service professionals. Benito was very knowledgeable and friendly and knew exactly what to do to fix my few problems. He was done in just about one day and charged a very reasonable for material and labor. Benitos landscape and maintenance is the one to call if you want to get the job done and done it quick and perfectly! Benito also quick response and able to fit me in a such hurry schedule. We were very appreciated all your team's hard work. We Look forward to work with you again in the future.

Benito was a pleasure to work with. He was responsive, punctual, flexible, and professional. He was able to work around my schedule and jumped in on the work right away. The work got done in a timely manner and my yard has never looked better. The entire street has yard envy thanks to Benito. Regretfully, I have to revise my original review, While Benito did get the work done in a timely manner it didn't take long to see how it got done so quickly. Less than a week after the work was done weeds started growing up through the new landscaping, this was after I talked with him about making sure we had good weed prevention and he assured me everything would be fine. When I spoke to him about fixing the problem he said "Just Spray Weed Killer". When I told him that wasn't what I had paid for he set up a day to come through and do the work right by laying down weed guard under the bark but never showed up. So if all you want is your yard to hurry up and look good for as long as it takes for the contractor to cash your check and disappear than use Benito. But if you want quality work and someone that stands behind their work. Look elsewhere.

Benito and his guys did an awesome job with the project we had done in my backyard. We are so pleased with the outcome. We hired Benito for a very large project involving junk removal, fence replacement, landscape design, flowerbeds, concrete removal and pouring, sprinkler repair, and sod laying. We have a completely transformed backyard now. In the beginning, he asked me what did I have in mind and got an idea of what I wanted. From that, we created a layout that would work for me. During the installation, he made it a point to make sure I was happy with everything before we proceeded to the next phase. We even made a road trip to the rock yard, so I could pick out the type & color of rocks that I wanted in the planter beds. I picked out and bought my own plants and flowers. He helped me decide what type of plants and trees would look good. I ended up getting some Japanese Maples, Bougainvilleas, Banana palms, and some grasses. They gladly planted them where I decided I liked them. He also helped me give my concrete a design element that I really love. He put in a "salted" boarder that gave a nice touch. We put a round concrete slab in the yard, that I want to place some chairs and a portable fire pit on. We are almost ready for our first family get-together. I wanted to post pictures, just note that I haven't quite finished staining the fence, but I will post anyways. Benito gave me a fair price and made sure to stay within my budget. I am very happy with the finished project and can't wait to have him come back and replace our other side fence and redesign the front yard also!
