Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

Victoria did our baby girl's first year photo shoot and we got the photos few days ago. INCREDIBLE was the first wprd that came to our mind. Trust me when I say, photographing a baby who just then woke up from sleep is not easy. But, Victoria was patient and tried so many little tricks to get that elusive smile. I highly recommend Victoria and can't wait to work with her again. :-) If you are in Bay Area, try Lake Elizabeth for your shoots. It is a beautiful location with water, mountains and trees.

Brian helped us with an engagement photo session. We decided to have the photo shoot in the last minute two weeks before the wedding, so we needed the photos very soon. Brian was very helpful to set the schedule as it was convenient for us, also he sent us the photos much earlier than he was supposed to do. We did the photo shoot in Santa Clara University. He was very professional that he arrived earlier to look around the campus and chose the great spots for the photos. He also knows how to make you feel comfortable. It is not very easy to smile and be shoot for a long time as we are not professional models. He caught our mind and feelings very well, so he gave proper tips and adjustments to make us look better and more natural. Finally, we really love our engagement photos and all our friends and family said they look wonderful, gorgeous and even artistic. We were very happy.. Thank you so much Brian! We will call you again if we have any special occasion later on.

Stavan was on much early in the venue and was ready with all the setup and done with the venue and theme photos by the time the event started. Captures photos really well with candid shoots as and when the new guests arrived and so covered everybody in the frame. He was responding so quickly and it was easy to work with . Got RAW and edited pictures on time. I recommend Stavan for any event photography .

I went to Shew Design Studio for a professional headshot. Dennis was already set to go when I arrived at the appointed time. He had an upbeat personality and was able to put me at ease despite my trepidation about the photo shoot. We were done well within the allotted hour and I had plenty of good photos to select from.

I hired Steve to take head shots of me so that I could post one on Linked In. I am delighted with the photos, which look professional. During the photo shoot, Steve had very helpful suggestions about positioning my face, head, neck and shoulders. I had my hair and makeup done professionally, which I recommend so that you look your best.

Mic was easy to work with and very accommodating in helping me make sure I had the rights I needed to use the photos. The shoot went well and I was satisfied with the photos. The price was also very reasonable. My only small complaint would be that the editing was fairly minimal, no work done to remove fly-away hairs or correct lens flair on glasses. This wasn't a problem for me, but if you want more comprehensive editing, it might be a good idea to ask about it in advance.

We had our first Maternity shoot with Stavan and it was amazing. He was with his assistant Ayush. Firstly, during this COVID19 situation we were looking for some outdoor location that feels safe and nearby our residence. Stavan suggested a very nice location with a very less crowd. Coming to photography, I must say Stavan is very professional. We loved each and every shot he captured. His composition and editing is fabulous. We expected an hour of photoshoot but he and Ayush stayed beyond that. We felt very comfortable because of his friendly nature, patience and flexibility. Also, he didn't had any limits on number of photos to be shared. He shared all the photos with us. I would definitely recommend Stavan for photoshoot and we would love to connect with him for photoshoots in future.

Meeta helped us capture some amazing moments to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. My wife and I are generally awkward posers and were skeptical about the idea of a photo shoot. Meeta made us feel very comfortable from the very first conversation. She helped pick up the right location, had really nice ideas on poses, and we really enjoyed the whole experience without feeling un-natural. The pictures came out great, and she turned them around in a really short time! Would highly recommend Meeta!

It was a great experience with Brian. He made fiance and myself very comfortable and guided us well to make sure pictures come out pretty. I was excited about this photo shoot because few selected ones will also be used for decoration in my wedding reception. I loved the pictures and Brian was superb in capturing the moments and picturesque and scenic beauty of the place. He worked with my fiance to finalize the location as well and even did extra pictures for us without any hassle. I am glad I found Brian through Thumbtack and will definitely recommend him to everyone. Great job, Great experience!!
