I am truly sorry about our misunderstanding. I had thought that through the time I dedicated to answering in detail all of your concerns, we reached a clear agreement. As part of my strong work ethic, I strive to provide clear, mutual contracts prior to the start of any job. When you contacted me regarding the installation of a Lowe’s security door, you were clear that you wanted to beat Lowe’s installation quote of $150. We agreed to a fee of $120 for the straight installation. When I am asked to commit to a firm quote—as opposed to working at my hourly rate—I commit to performing the job, even if unforeseen problems arise. For General Contractors, a negotiated quote means that the job might take more time and effort, or a bit less. With your project, the security door fit required extensive trimming on both sides of the stucco walls, since the security door was larger than the opening. This work was in addition to the door’s installation. I gladly resolved this problem for the negotiated $120. Normally, this would incur an additional fee, known as a change order. I am glad that you are pleased with the quality of my work and that I was able to accomplish the job for under Lowe’s rate. It upsets me that we did not end with you feeling satisfied. I would rather have a satisfied, happy client and spend a little more of my own time to resolve a job than have a few extra dollars in my pocket. In my over 50 years as a builder and General Contractor, I have always prioritized doing high quality work, establishing harmonious relationships and finding the most economical solutions to my clients’ building and remodeling projects When seeking contractors for future projects, I encourage you to consider if you are more comfortable paying an hourly rate versus a flat quote.
