Friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, affordable and thorough. I don't know what more anyone could look for in a tree service. I had 4 trees that needed trimming - Chris gave me a great price for that and for a little more, threw in maintenance of a few other trees I didn't notice needing attention until he pointed it out. And he was 100% correct. All look great and they even cleaned up the entire area. Great service - highly recommended Jeff

Requested a quote and Alfonso came out the same day to advise which trees needed to be removed. He scheduled the removal for the same week. The team arrived promptly and got to work immediately. Extremely professional service with a fair price! I have already referred this company to friends and family who need tree maintenance.

We had a whole lot of things that needed to be hauled away; construction demolition, accumulated trash, yard waste, and a whole room full of boxes. Chris and his assistant worked quickly and efficiently - taking 4 loads to the dump. They even did the demolition of large items. They also did a great yard cleanup for us, including tree trimming, and left the patio and driveway swept clean. Nice guys, great work at reasonable prices. We will be hiring them again in the future.

Overall I was happy with the experience. I needed a tree in my front yard trimmed. Although they took off a little more than I wanted, I figure I don't have to worry about it for a while. Did a decent job cleaning up afterwards too. I just need to get up on my roof and sweep the remaining debris off which they missed.

Quick reply to our request, fair price and timely on the job. Laans tree - removed several Sago Palms on our property after a dog of ours got really sick. We did not know they were poisonous and they took care of them quickly and effiecintly. It's like they were never there.

I can't say enough good things about Jose and the landscape work he did for us! He and his team were professional, courteous and got the job done on time and within our budget. He laid pavers for us in our front and back yard, removed tree stumps, graded the yard and moved sprinklers. He also ran wire for low voltage lights. I highly recommend Jose for any landscape or home improvement job!

Bernabe represents his business very well. The tasks were well defined and done very well. Out unruly rear olive tree was massive and Bennie was able to trim it well and haul everything away. The price was a very good value (~30% lower than the next closest bid). I will plan to use Evaristo tree service again in the future.

Greg and his crew did a complete makeover on our yard and everything looks really beautiful and high end. Greg was patient with me and didn't rush me in making decisions after I had changed the layout a few times. Everyone at GM Landscaping was very professional, efficient, detail oriented (not missing even the tiniest of details), and helpful with offering suggestions to tweak the design to achieve our ultimate goal and happiness. I am a very picky customer and I can truly say that I would recommend GM Landscaping to anyone who is looking to get the best results on any of your landscaping and tree trimming projects.

I can't say enough about how great my trees and yard look after these guys came out yesterday. They did tree trimming (including a palm) , pulled lots of weeds, and removed an old stump. Ricardo promptly returned my call upon my leaving a message, they were out here the next day to give me an estimate and did the job a couple of days later. They showed up when they said they were going to both for the estimate and the work. Their rates are resonable and they cleaned up so well before they left that you'd never know they were here! Will definitely be calling them out for future needs.

Juan was AMAZING to say the least! Our backyard was in a very poor state, looked like a jungle! Juan's team took out all the weeds, cut down the two trees we had and cemented our whole back yard, it looks like a new house! He said it would take three days do complete the job and he really took less than two and a half. His prices are very affordable and his team is very professional. Definitely would hire him again.

Gilberto did an outstanding job of installing a new sprinkler system at my home. The installation occurred on literally the hottest day of the year, which didn't deter Gilberto in the least. I was very impressed with his know-how and performance, so much so that I also hired him to do my future landscaping maintenance. I would highly recommend Gilberto for any type of yard project.

Jason came out to my house on time. He was very thorough in his estimate with all of the plans that we had for both yards. Him and his crew were on time and professional the whole time. He trimmed my two trees, built a fantastic deck and laid pavers throughout the back yard. In the front yard he built a retaining wall with two columns, laid artificial turf and built me a raised planter bed. I am absolutely in love with how my yards look! I will continue to use JSJ Services for my tree trimming in the future. And I will recommend him and his crew to all my neighbors. Thank you JSJ!

Gordon was prompt to respond, scheduled me in quickly, and followed through with excellent work. They were able to repair a bad pipe breakage along with several other repair/maintenance projects, including relocating a few sprinkler heads. My entire irrigation system was in need of TLC and he restored it to “good health”.

After I was introduced to Joseph and his tree company, I had him do one job for me. After that, he did all of my tree work! And as a former Grounds Manager at Point Loma College, that was a lot of work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
