Pete gave us a great starting point to start training our dog with behavioral problems. We started working on impulse control, feeding rituals, and commanding her attention in a stressful environment for our dog.

Les is the best of the best when it comes to dog training. He knows his stuff and it was apparent from the way he connected with our dog in the first training session. He truly cares about each client and is committed to seeing them succeed. We saw results after the very first training session and the progress was remarkable following each session. Les comes prepared to each session with treats and training aids. He gives you "homework" to do with your dog after each session to prepare you for the next. He even follows up with you after each meeting to see how things are going. Les played a significant role in shaping our puppy into the dog he is today. I highly recommend Les for dog training, we will definitely use his services again!

Kevin impressed us with his willingness to work around our schedules and to patiently manage our young rescue dog. Our dog reacted to him better than others we interviewed so, in a sense, she chose Kevin. His rates are very competitive too. We hope this is the beginning of a long and successful relationship!

I can't say enough good things about California Canine. The training is superb and I have no doubt you'd have to travel pretty far to find anything comparable. This trainer is very experienced, amazingly knowledgeable, utterly professional, answering every question I had and providing all the help I needed in order to ensure that my six-year-old German Shepherd rescue dog (and I!) could learn the skills we needed so that this could remain her forever home. What my dog and I have learned in this process is invaluable, and worth every single dollar. I am so grateful that I was fortunate enough to discover this fine and excellent resource.

Christina was great with my dog. They went on an hour walk and he came home and was ready for a nap. She made him a friend for life with treats. She will be coming back again this week.

Sue has been working with me and my two min pins, Coco and Tootsie on behavior modification issues. I was at the point of contacting the breeder to give one of them back - basically at the end of my rope. I'd worked with other dog. trainers, but Sue explained and showed how to manage and modify behavior that was easy to comprehend and made sense. I am not exaggerating when I say she has literally changed my life and helped me rethink how to interact with my girls. I am very grateful.

Karin walks my dog Bodie every day, rain or shine. Karin is nice, responsible, clearly crazy about the dogs, and great about letting me know her plan for the day. I get regular photos of Bodie having a great time, and he's always wiped out when he gets home. A tired dog is a happy dog!

Keynoe did a great job with getting my pit bull Rhylie back on track. We came to him with behavioral problems with leash pulling, not listening to us, recall issues, and greeting people who come into our house. After just a few weeks of sessions I can honestly say that my dog has significantly changed for the better! She listens to us, comes when called and walks are so much more enjoyable now for both of us.

I am an owner of an extremely protective 160 pound St. Bernard. She has extreme issues with social interactions with people if they are not family. I was so fortunate to find Coune's Canines. Stacy was extremely brave on that first visit. My dog lunges at her many times and barked non stop. She came back! And we tried her entering the house with my dog in her cage. This went on for many weeks but finally a breakthrough my dog allowed her to pet her through the cage. Now Stacy is easily her good friend! She can walk her around the property play inside with her and when I tell my dog she is coming to visit she is very excited. I never thought I would find anyone that would work with my temperamental girl. But I would highly recommend Coyne's Canines. They care about your pet and treat them like their own.

Char is very friendly, patient and punctual. She cares a lot about dogs and more importantly, our puppy Samoyed. Char always reports how our puppy is doing when we ask and is happy to complete extra tasks including reporting the temperature of our house or duct taping our mail-slot so our puppy doesn't destroy our mail. My fiancé and I would highly recommend Char and we've only heard positive comments about her from our friends in our HOA.

I have two wonderful dogs at the moment (beagles), but I would like to earn some extra money besides the money I earn from doing chores. I am comfortable walking and taking care of all dogs, but I preferred those who are potty and/or crate trained. I am in high school, but I am a great caretaker. I love walking and playing with dogs, and I will even groom your dog! I love all kinds of dogs, so I will take care any kind. Contact me if you're interested. I have walked and taken cared of dogs around my neighborhood, so I have tons of practice.

About

I have been training dogs for 55 years. I have trained in most every disciplines. My training is based on not only the dog but also the owners. Your lifestyle and your dog must work together. The breed or mix of breeds also determine your dogs behavior. This combination of factors are essential to that well behaved dog. I don't believe in robot training for your dog and know that you train a Terrier, including pit bulls, different that you train a Poodle. I have had German Shepherds, Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Whippet, Poodle, Afghan Hounds and Borzoi. I am now an American Kennel Club judge and also judge international shows.

About

I have experiences in pet sitting, handling various animals, and four years as a personal attendant. Cooking, cleaning, light medical duties, as well as dog walking are part of my previous experience.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
