Introduction: For over forty years, I have taught private piano lessons starting at elementary up to advanced levels in technique, sight reading, theory, performance and repertoire. I encourage my students to play in private recitals, participate in piano auditions with International Piano Guild and the Certificate of Merit program with MTAC Music Teachers Association of California. My education includes two degrees in music B.A. from Mills College in 1972 and M.A. in piano pedagogy from Holy Names University in 1991. Moreover,I have participated in worship ministry in various churches. Overall, my goal is to teach students to love music and play the piano throughout their entire life. I enjoy working with people of all ages and getting to know them in a personal way offering a loving atmosphere in which they are able to learn.

My daughter and I have been taking piano lessons for a year now from Kathleen Martinez. She is extremely knowledgeable in not only the music itself but the way she teaches. She is extremely patient and that is what we appreciate most! Her tuition is very fair for the quality instruction that is received.

Mrs Martinez has been a huge help for me. I've been wanting to learn the piano for the longest time and I could not have chosen a better teacher. She's very caring, kind, well informed, patient, and encouraging. When I'd get frustrated in having trouble going through a certain piece, she would slow it down and take it step by step, all while being very patient. Doing so helped me tremendously and continue using the advice she's given me. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking to take piano. My lessons with her were truly the highlight of my week. :)

My daughter who is 8 years old has been coming to Kathleen for lessons for almost 2 years. She is very patient with my daughter and is great when it comes to rescheduling. The differance with Kathleen & other studios is that if we're late or just can't make it she makes sure she gives us our makeup time. Where other studios will not. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering learning to play piano.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I do have a standard price $30.00 a half hour. $25 if two children are taking the one-hour lesson!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I have an interview with a new customer to discover what goals and interests he or she has. If a parent wants his or her child to study piano, I ask the child if he or she wants to learn and is willing to practice ten minutes a day. I require the parent to learn with the child just like doing homework after school.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a B.A. in music from Mills College and an M.A. in piano pedagogy from Holy Names University and studied early childhood education and worked in preschools to be familiar with how young children learn.
