We were moving from our 3 bedroom condo to a 4 bedroom house. The movers were a party of 4 and a truck who showed up exactly on time. They were very prompt and organized. We had packed most of our loose items in boxes. So they mainly had to focus on the big items. All the furniture was handled with care and neatly wrapped in plastic. They also did a good job of neatly assembling all the furniture at our new house. They made sure all the boxes and items were delivered to the correct room. They were quite friendly and acted very professionally. We had a lot of big items and they made sure the move and assembly was completed within a reasonable time. Overall my experience with MGB has been excellent. I would recommend them to any customer looking to make a hassle free move.

Tony and his crew were outstanding. Tony was honest and fair, didn't try to upsell or add hidden charges, they showed up on time, and his team was very polite and efficient. Wrapped everything that need protecting, nothing was broken or damaged, no damage to the property. They thought about and asked about where things should be placed when they moved furniture in. Very professional, and exactly what you want in movers. Although I hope to not move again for a long time, these are the movers I'll call if I do.

Moving went smoothly and great! Both guys were friendly and efficient. The only hiccup was with the start time. The movers thought we were starting at 7am, but it was scheduled for 9am. I rushed to my old apartment since they were already there, and didn't want them to have to wait or reschedule. Maybe a confirmation call the night before versus the day of so there's no confusion?

I would highly recommend Larry's Quality Moving! Larry was extremely responsive and professional in his work. I appreciate that he took proper care and handled my belongings with respect rather than carelessly throw them around as most movers do. Larry was also very honest in his pricing- upon completion, the total for my move ended up being less than what he had originally quoted me, so he gave me the lower/correct rate instead of trying to bend the rules and overcharge me! Thanks again, Larry!

I've had pretty bad experiences with other moving companies like didn't showing up at all,not reliable or a lot of broken furniture etc. For my recent move I did a little research and contacted several moving companies and only couple of them get back to me with affordable quotes. The other companies prices were high expensive. And I decided to go with 5 star moving because they had pretty good reviews on yelp. On the move day the movers called me 20 min ahead and they were very polite. My move was very smooth from beginning to the end. I would not hesitate to recommend or call them again, not only for their competitive prices but for their professionalism and courtesy.

The entire experience was flawless. The two movers that came to help were clean and very helpful. They made sure all the glass was wrapped and ensured that all furniture was strapped in truck. They moved us as though they were moving their own items. I would recommend them without thought. Thanks for the experience from the Admin person Garina to the two men that moved us. Moving is usually not a good experience but you all made it much better.

He moved a large, heavy credenza. It was turned down by 3 charitable organizations that wasted my time by assuring me on the phone it would be removed, but each time their movers rejected it. Brett is careful, professional and pleasant.

We had such a great experience! My husband and I did a long distance move from Los Angeles to Portland for law school. I was pretty nervous about which movers to go with — you are entrusting your entire life’s belongings with them so did extensive research on every option from large moving companies to PODS to UHauls. We were also pretty budget conscious so were shocked at the prices we kept getting back. But when I got the quote from I Need To Be Moved I was excited but honestly a little skeptical because of the affordability compared to everyone else. Plus I’ve dealt with so many scammers online I really wanted to do my due diligence. Their front office was incredibly kind and patient, answering all our questions, providing referrals and video testimonials that made us confident enough to move forward. The moving team was so professional. They clearly take their job very seriously and treated our belongings with the utmost care. The team even drove hours out of their way en route to Portland so as to avoid the wildfires (which we hadn’t even thought to ask about). I couldn’t recommend this company more. I know moving is a really high stress experience but I Need To Be Moved made the transition painless.

PROFESSIONAL & RELIABLE This is our second move with PTM Movers. Once in 2012 and just recently this May. As with the last move they were very helpful and answered all our concerns prior to the move. They were punctual and professional. Great service and price.

Iren and Jamorai were prompt (even a bit early) and provided stellar service throughout the whole day. They were fun, easy to talk to, hardworking and had a lot of wrapping, pads and dollies to meet the needs of all my items.

First let me say this has been a very difficult long distance move for myself and my family. Allen & his guys were beyond great and lifted so much weight off our shoulders. The window of pick up was easy and when they delivered our furniture & boxes everything was the same way, no damages or scratches! The guys were friendly, fast & professional. I definitely have recommended Cloud9 Movers to a few people who are in the moving process as well.

Just finished a move with these guys today and it was definitely a great experience.   Pre-move: The manager Li kept in constant contact with me to ensure that the appointment time would be correct.  I verified with them 2 days before and the day before to make sure we were still scheduled.  The day of the move which was today, they showed up exactly on time and prepared which was excellent: During Move:  The movers were great.  They came with all the required equiipment to get their job done quickly and efficiently.  They had dolly's, those 4 wheeled cart things, and a bonus blankets with tape to wrap up your valuable furniture.  They wrapped and protected the couches, TV's and mirrors to ensure that they survive the trip.  THey were also very quick to getting things out of my old apartment and into the movers truck, and finally into my new location. Overall, it was a great experience using these guys for your move.  They actual movers were super friendly and not sketch looking which made me a little more comfortable letting them handle my goods.  They defintely made the moving experience, which is already freaking stressful as it is, very simple and Im glad this whole ordeal is over. Thanks Guys!

I was incredibly stressed, but Luis and Gilbert moved quickly and confidently. They were truly professional throughout and never stopped moving. They were worth every dollar, and I would hire them again in an instant!! You won’t regret choosing them!!

Just finished our move with this company and besides a few hiccups with miscommunication through (Chris or Alex the dispatchers or owners, not really sure who I was talking to the whole time) we are pretty pleased. First I chatted back and fourth on Yelp about the price quote and he had scheduled me and never told me what time so I had to call and approve the time since he just assumed his chosen time would work with me and never told me what time it was. Then I made it very clear I needed 30 minute notice before the guys show up, since my stuff was in a storage and I would have to have time to meet them there to let them in. Somehow, even though I had called him multiple times from my cell phone he managed to write it down wrong. Therefore I was not informed the movers were coming until they were there and I called the company and they called them to get the correct number. Anyhow we were VERY VERY PLEASED WITH CYLE AND ELIO as our movers, they were FRIENDLY, EFFICIENT and VERY PROFESSIONAL. They moved some very heavy things of ours with a long walking distance to the upstairs apartment and were really great, I just wish we knew we could have used 3 guys to take some of the load off these two and get it done a bit quicker. Lastly, the company did meet us in the middle and started our time 15 minutes later because of the mishap in the beginning, which saved me 30

Jerry does Excellent work. You can tell he has over 20 years experience. From prepping to protect our wood floors to trimming baseboards and doorways; his attention to detail is hard to find. I referred him to another family member to paint their house too! I would defiantly hire Jerry again.

I had a fantastic experience with Carlos! He was very helpful in the Thumbtack app asking good questions and helping me prepare for the job. He arrived on time and work expediently - he even took on additional work as the job grew and gave me a fair price. He was pleasant to work with and I'd very much trust him to do additional work on a house or commercial project. He is extremely knowledgeable and a total pro! Thank you, Carlos~

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
