Best handyman to date. Originally I called Kevin to change my shower head but by the time he arrived I had a short list of things that I needed help with. Not only did Kevin take care of all my shower but he also completed my list walked me through the the process so in the future I can do it myself. Kevin is very pleasant, and knowledgeable and I would recommend his outstanding service.

Steve is my go-to handyman. He is very very good! Smart, responsible and really good at what he does. I hired him for a move that required a lot of furniture assembly. Not only did he do his job super fast, he also took on the management of my movers. I hired him for another project - a HUGE and very complicated IKEA wardrobe. He assembled it no time and no single bolt was left (you know how hard that is with IKEA). I love working with Steve and will definitely hire him again. I recommend him to all my family and friends.

Dave is an amazing professional and does a very neat job at a very reasonable price. Very responsive over texts and very versatile with the tasks. Not only did he accompany us to Home Depot and gave recommendations, but also carried the new toilets in his truck and hauled away the old one. He wore the hat of a plumber as well as a handyman, Fixed a number of minor repairs around the house. Not only that, one of our toilets had a broken part after he left and he came back to fix it free of cost. I have never had such a pleasant experience with a plumber/handyman in the past as a home owner. Thanks Dave and will hire you again!

After having another handyman bail on us halfway through a project, we were wary to trust somebody else, but Carlos proved to be super nice and responsible. He was very responsive over text and even takes payment via Venmo!

I was in urgent need for a handyman, as a large part of a wall, insulation & floor in my storage closet was damaged by my leaking water heater. I decided to try Thumbtack and was very happy to see that Arisel from AA Cardenas reached out to me and said he can start work immediately. He was very prompt in replying, and very easy to reach on phone & text before, during and after the work was completed. When he came, he assessed the work to be done, gave me a very clear outline of materials needed and the labor cost. He told me he could finish the work in 2 days, which is exactly what my deadline was, and he did finish all the work in 2 days flat! He offered to go and pick up all the material from the hardware store, and worked till late on the first day to make sure he got as much work done as possible. He was very professional in putting up new insulation, patch sheet rock, applying texture to blend with existing wall texture and paint the area. He always cleaned up before he left and was very open to me asking questions about various things he was working on. Arisel was very nice to talk to as well, and he was accommodating to all my questions. He even came back 4 days later, at my request, to put floor molding. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the work Arisel did, and would definitely hire him again.

Brian was great! Very professional, punctual and responsive. He gave a fair estimate to fix our washer and dryer. When we needed a part he was nice enough to run over to Home Depot. He also showed us how to fix our mini refrigerator even though that was not included in our quote. He likes what he does and is always looking to learn more and that’s why he’s one of the best handyman’s around the area. Thanks Brian!

I'm a real person, I work at a tech startup in SF, and just having moved to a new part of the city - didn't feel like assembling furniture AND having to unpack. I had some NON-IKEA, but similar, furniture that needed to be assembled. I had looked at some other popular task sites but they were showing me candidates that didn't exactly look "handyman-capable", and were conveniently charging ridiculous hourly rates. That's when I searched another local list and found Chao's post for "handyman services"; we easily negotiated a fair arrangement and he was able to come that SAME DAY. I was initially nervous waiting for him to arrive but when Chao showed up - I felt like I won the lottery. He brought his own tools and didn't want to waste time on small talk. THIS GUY IS SERIOUSLY A PROFESSIONAL HANDYMAN, & FURNITURE ASSEMBLY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT. Within his first 5 minutes on site, He took that first furniture box with 1000 pieces and had methodically and systematically placed them in an orderly fashion and quickly began assembly -- paying strict accordance to instructions detail. WHEN CHAO WAS DONE, THERE WERE NO EXTRA OR MISSING PIECES!!! And, even though this furniture was "cheap", it was assembled as best as possible. Chao is an expert. I had some difficult space constraints that he had to work within but he just adapted. He had lots of tricks too, like unfolding the packaging box to protect my floor. Using a piece of cardboard to protect the furniture during hammer-assembly steps, etc... This guy is PROFESSIONAL and I highly recommend him.

I highly recommend you hiring Matt for any handyman or carpentry needs.

Glee was very responsive . He came and fixed the issue the same day I called. He was professional, explaining and showing what was wrong and what the solution will be. He also quoted the job and stayed within that quote. I absolutely recommend him and will likely use him again for a handyman issue

I needed some paint and other hauling. I decided at the same time I would get a new kitchen faucet installed. Every aspect was flawless and pleasant. Good communication, fast response, first rate work, and a fraction of the price of others. I will use for my other handyman needs.

My husband and I had to renovate the home for AIRBNB and we had to get everything organize in a timely manner. Davis showed up promptly to help us clean the house and redo the rooms. He also went out of his way to assist us with prepping the living room. We totally recommend him for anyone who needs a reliable handyman.

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

Crespo did a great job of installing my very complex murphy bed. Not only did he complete the job but he made sure that it was secure and safe to use. Although, the pieces that arrived didn't fit like a puzzle piece; Crespo found alternative ways to make it work and function like it should! Great Job Crespo and I would use him again and recommend him to anyone!

Dan is awesome! After a plumber fixed the leaky faucet in my kitchen sink, he pointed out the rotted wood in the storage area underneath and suggested I contact a handyman to replace it. I feared this would be really expensive to fix. Through a google search for a handyman, I discovered Thumbtack, which then connected me to Daniel Ball. I was really surprised by how reasonable his original quote was and am still amazed that I ultimately didn't pay anything more, even after two hours of labor. Above all, Dan was very cooperative about setting up an appointment, arrived promptly, and worked efficiently. Plus he is super-personable and friendly. Finally, I can look at the space under my kitchen sink without having to groan. (Wish I had "before" and "after photos!) I highly recommend Dan as a handy man for your home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
