RIcardo was great - super helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. He was incredibly responsive and was willing to pitch in on additional things to help make my move out as smooth as possible. For projects he helped install some flooring, paint, move some furniture and patch some holes. Would recommend him for sure.

We were remodeling our kitchen and needed someone to install under cabinet lighting with short notice. Bogdan was available the same day we setup the project on Thumbtack. Bogdan was creative in coming up with a solution that concealed both the driver and the wiring. He was also diligent about finishing the project within the time constraint.

These guys were outstanding. We are very picky and detail-oriented, and they met and exceeded our standards. They were incredibly easy to work with. Honest, polite, on time, flexible. The quality of the work was impeccable, and the price was very fair. They painted the exterior of my house in San Francisco, and now I have contracted them to refinish and paint my back deck. I would highly recommend Eduardo and Jose Paz's Painting

I needed a hanging light fixture installed in my dining room. I booked the technician (Jose Rafael) for a same-day appointment, and he called me in advance to confirm the work requirements. He arrived on time and brought all of the necessary equipment. He even had an assistant in tow. He was quick and knowledgeable (gave me advice on other projects), and he even adjusted a couple screws on a cabinet for me. I will definitely be calling Jose again.

I was very pleased with Barsesat Woodworks. I needed one kitchen cabinet drawer repaired and a second drawer completely rebuilt. He did a great job at matching the wood stain and strengthened the existing drawers. Yes I would call again if I have a woodwork project.

Our search for help with our cabinets started after purchasing a home that was in desperate need of help to move out of the 80’s. The cabinets were solid oak, with great hardware, and many nice pull outs and other features. Good cabinets, they just needed a refresh. We began our search and education about cabinet refacing, re-finishing, and replacement. We looked at several refacing companies that wanted to charge in excess of 10k for sub-standard panel doors. And no work done on the inside of the cabinets! We had a very hard time finding a refinisher. We eventually found 2, Fernando being the only one that got back to us in a reasonable period of time. Fernando came out quickly, looked at the job, explained his process, and quoted us a price. We shook hands, and set a date. He arrived on time and got right to it. He had to work around our floor refinishing, and some painting and did so with no issues. We had a very tight schedule, with this being one of the last jobs to be done before moving in. Even with a few modifications that came up, he got it all done, and it looks great! We are so happy we did not go with a refacing and frankly we would not have been able to afford getting new cabinets that even approached the quality of these cabinets. So refacing really turned out well! I highly recommend Fernando Fernandez for cabinet refinishing. He is a no BS, down to earth, and honest guy that knows his trade well.

Kurt suggested instead of just doing Cabinet refinishing in the kitchen to do the cabinets throughout the entire home since they were identical throughout and all could use the upgraded look.

Mark is absolutely amazing! I wish all contractors could be like him. He is professional, friendly, very courteous, and his work is beautiful. I hired him to make custom cabinets for the bathrooms and he walked me through each step to customize my design. When he was unable to find a matching color for the countertop, he contacted a company he works with so I could look through pieces of granite and find a match. He installed the cabinets this weekend and the workmanship is beautiful. Solid wood, matching stain, and soft closing drawers. The price is on point as well. I would venture to guess that something of this size would be about the same price at Ikea, or some other cheap furniture place that uses particle board and laminate. I will be using Mark for all my custom woodwork needs - and there will be plenty.

I had Armando build 3 large, tall, custom cabinets for my art gallery that could serve as both display space and storage. They turned out beautifully. Armando is a good designer and gave me lots of good ideas for the project. Not always on time but overall, very professional.

Winston did a wonderful job refinishing our outdated oak cabinets in the kitchen and three bathrooms and painting them a fresh, bright white! My husband and I knew that we wanted to change the color of the cabinets but hadn't had time to look at paint colors or hardware. Winston made great suggestions for both. He was very professional, punctual, and very easy to work with. Not only that, but he gave very reasonable pricing. We ware so pleased with the finished product that we are awaiting an estimate on another home project we are considering!

It was my lucky day finding Zeus online... The kitchen countertops set up by the previous owner were ugly and unstable in places, and I needed them redone before visitors arrived. I liked their portfolio, i just hoped their work stood up to it, and quick... Well it sure did! Jesse immediately sourced a great-looking, durable and surprisingly inexpensive replacement. The finish is modern and practical, and it really transforms the kitchen. I get so many compliments! Their attention to detail is commendable, especially given how darn fast these guys work. Jesse and his crew did this in a few hours, even carving a new custom handle treatment for the lower cabinet doors. When he offered to take on raising the stovetop hood next (previous owner was a midget!) I trusted him that they wouldn't still be wrestling with it days later when those guests were due. Again, so glad I did. They did it in a day, re-wiring and everything. No more bumping my head when I look into my cooking pots! Next up, they're building a little studio for me, to be cut into the hillside just below the house... With Jesse's clever design and materials, he's managing to keep this affordable without looking "budget"... I'm excited! I recommend Jesse for his style-conscious, resourceful, and unique remodeling approaches. He and his Zeus team do beautiful work, built to last.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

      How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

      Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

      • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
      • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
      • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
      • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
