I found Serene Oak Hypnosis Center and connected with Janice on a whim! I am so glad that I found her. Janice is very intuitive, professional, warm, kind-hearted, and all around easy to work with. If you are looking for someone that makes you feel comfortable right off the bat, look no further! I experienced tremendous release after the 1st session, and I plan on coming back in the future after taking care of a few things. Overall wonderful experience, and pricing was definitely manageable as well. <3

Tony helped me get a handle on my out of control eating. Granted, I am generally pretty good with it, but kind of let myself go during the holidays. I was having trouble getting back on track and through hypnosis, I was able get back on track. Tony has a very calming personality, and I felt at ease "going under."

After three years of dating, my girlfriend and I decided that we needed help in repairing our struggling sex life. We chose Hunter because of her expertise as both a Sex and Relationship Coach and a Clinical Hypnotherapist. Upon meeting Hunter, and realizing the gem that she is in the coaching world, we knew our relationship could finally achieve its true potential. She is the single most comforting and warmest practitioner I have worked with. She is funny and happy, and from the very minute we walked in the door, I felt at ease and was able to immediately open up about my problems. I was quite nervous to start sex coaching as I had never talked about my sexual concerns with a professional before. I had been a pornography addict for more than half my life, and it wasn’t until I met my girlfriend, that I finally realized I had to recognize my addiction and come clean. Unfortunately, despite coming to terms with my addiction, our sex life didn’t recover. Hunter’s work with hypnosis has quelled my continuous urges to view pornography, and through Hunter’s coaching, my girlfriend and I more fully understand our issues, as well as our individual needs - both sexual and non-sexual. I can honestly say that Hunter has changed my life. My girlfriend and I finally have a stable, regular sex life. Dan B.

My experience with Ewa's hypnotherapy was fantastic. She really surprised me with the scope of her sessions - we talked about everything from past current yummy herbal teas to drink for clarity. The hypnosis portion was always my favorite part...even though I was merely curious if it would work at first. Honestly, I found it to be the KEY for every session. Combined with the tarot cards she used, I received some Very Clear images to help me on my healing path. I highly recommend!!

As a serial student, I am on a constant quest for self-improvement and life’s truths. This journey began in college with a Psychology degree but after a traumatic divorce I quickly dispelled traditional forms of therapy when I discovered and experience Brief Solution Therapy. I also am a huge fan of Tony Robbins but in my analysis his techniques where remarkably effective on the conscious level. I knew that personal limiting beliefs from my abused childhood residing in my subconscious were preventing me from being my best self. So my journey continued into NLP which in turn led me to Ericksonian hypnosis. All highly valid and powerful forms of therapy yet something was still missing. Enter Randy and Brainspotting. Isn’t life grand!?! “There are no accidents” as it’s only fitting that I write this review on Thumbtack as this is the site that I somehow happened upon that led me to Randy and this strange brief therapy called Brainspotting. Randy immediately responded to my inquiry stating that “Brainspotting goes deeper than hypnosis” so of course I just had to try it. Without spoiling your personal Brainspotting experience in describing the process let me focus on the results: Profound. After just one session I felt an inner calm and peace that I’ve never before experience. Not only was I free of daily struggles but the impact has not been just inner-world but immediately manifested in my outer-world as well. Life has “flowed” effortlessly with tangible new opportunities that have been transformative. Most importantly my newly discovered better self has dramatically and positively affected the lives of my family and the people I love most. What could be more important? Brainspotting has been life-altering for me as I’m certain it will be for you but lastly and most importantly is Randy himself. The love, empathy and compassion I experienced from Randy guiding me through my personal journey of self-discovery as left me in awe of his humanity.

I had gone through an ugly, expensive lawsuit to protect a musical copyright that had been infringed upon. Ultimately I had to let the lawsuit go, which impacted me financially, emotionally and creatively. Afterwards, I was shell-shocked and disillusioned which took the joy out of my life specifically in the area of creating music. My spirit was broken and I could not seem to fix it. I had never before experienced hypnosis. I came to it guarded but willing to try. Kaia was compassionate and patient in helping me identify the problems, As I relaxed into a dreamlike state she asked questions about where I was going, what I was feeling, and what I was seeing. Soon I just allowed myself to let go, moving into trust, going with the flow. I soon found myself before a locked portal. Behind were a series of other doors, all encased in Gothic arches with sacred energy, glowing with golden light. But I couldn’t enter because it was locked. It could not be forced open, and though I could see what lay behind it, I could not go around it either. Though this was frustrating, I began to realize that those cherished places were at least still there… I just had to find a key, though that would require work, time or whatever. Post-hypnotherapy, I continue to process. Taking heart, I now find I am achieving what I set out to do in that session: to reclaim those lost, battered parts of me, returning to my musical roots and moving on. My session was a cleansing, enlightening experience. I got tangible results upon which to build. UPDATE: The album in question is now up on Amazon and other sites. I continue selling my album and have just released a new one this year. The hypnotherapy was a significant step towards this outcome.

I was pleasantly surprised by the personalized hypnosis session. I never expected a hypnosis session to produce any substantial difference in how I felt. I loved the mood set by the musical elements in the background as well as Dr. Gilchrist's tone of voice. I also enjoyed how personalized my hypnosis session was. My name, occupation, likes and dislikes were all effectively mentioned during my session; I didn't feel as if I had received a cookie cutter hypnosis session. I now listen to it nightly and it has helped me feel a lot better about my work and to not stress as much as I used to. I'd recommend Dr. Gilchrist to anyone seeking a hypnotherapist who is caring and takes the time to study his patients.

My services are customized to meet the needs and preferences of each of my clients. I strongly believe that while we all carry universal feelings and experiences, we are all so very unique. When I guide my clients into a meditative space using hypnotherapy, I find first what draws their inner peace forward. I ask questions and I create something that tailors to each individual.

I do the work I do because it calls me. It calls me to utilize my gifts of intuition to see where individuals may not see, to hear where individuals may not hear and feel what individuals may have difficulty expressing. These gifts, when associated with the coaching process help clients experience amazing "Aha" moments and breakthrough what appeared as barriers or blocks to living the life they really want and the success they deserve.

This makes our practice unique, with each of us sharing our special strengths and talents, truly complimenting one another. Clients get "two for one" when they sign up with us, as it is not uncommon for a client to meet individually one time with me and another time with Lynn, making sure the client meets with the person with the specific expertise to assure success. Our clients get the full advantage of each one's unique expertise and specialty services. Both of us are highly skilled hypnotherapists but with specialities in different areas. I have over forty years of counseling experience and specialize in addiction and 12-step support, family and relationship problems, memory/recall (test taking), spirituality and resolution of traumatic events. Lynn specializes in smoke cessation, building confidence and self-esteem, weight management, and professional development (e.g. accomplishing goals, public speaking, procrastination). Of course, both of us handle many other concerns and we consult each other regularly to be sure each client receives the very best we can offer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Tension headaches
  • Alopecia areata
  • Asthma
  • Phobias
  • Insomnia
  • Addictions
  • Bedwetting
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Labor and delivery
  • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Stress
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Cancer-related pain
  • Weight loss
  • Eating disorders
  • Warts
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
