Tom built a portable deck project for me and my father, and took it upon himself to make every stage, from planning to installation, an absolute perfect example of what good carpentry is! He designed an ingenious hinging system to make the deck easier to move, and even came to my home to help me put it together! I would highly recommend Tom for any carpentry work, as the experience he provided me was professional, and the finished product he delivered was exceptional!

Steve proved himself to be an excellent choice for me to have some home improvement work taken care. Within 10 minutes of placing my request on Thumb Tac, I had received a response from Steve with an estimate of how much it would cost to do the work site unseen. Within an hour he was onsite looking over the project; we were able to quickly negotiate a fair price to have the work done with Steve including the demolition and haul-away of a weathered wooden shed and the spa pump, heater, and other items stored within it. My primary request was to have a somewhat large, very weathered wood deck demoed and hauled away to a landfill/dump. Steve turned out to be an easy-going, personable, and exceptionally hard worker very knowledgeable in many areas of home improvement, construction and demolition. He carefully and expertly executed the demolition and haul away of the entire wood deck. – A lot of work. Steve worked his a$$ off to demo the deck and haul it away in an efficient, timely, and proper manner. As a result, I asked Steve to also provide a power wash to my house paying special attention to my very weathered front walkway pavers. Throughout the project Steve followed through on every promise and worked especially hard to bring out the best with the power washing of the pavers providing an exceptionally noticeable improvement after removing a lot of baked in dirt, grime, and fungus. There were a couple of times when Steve could not make it back to continue the work at the agreed upon time due to unexpected ‘life’ events, which I understand happens to all of us. However, even given a couple of unexpected hold-ups, he made it to the site every day, kept me in the loop with what was going on, and gave me a discount to compensate for the inconvenience and hold-up in getting to the site due to these interruptions. He went so far as to show up on a Sunday to coat and seal the newly power washed front walkway pavers. All-in-all, it was a great experience working with Steve. He was reliable, a hard worker, very proficient and knowledgeable, and very competitively priced. I look forward to having him back for other home improvements in the near future. Thanks for a great job, Steve! -Bob

Jose and his crew did an awesome job. They transformed our backyard from a dirt patch with a rotted deck to a wonderful paver patio and installed a retaining wall. They always showed up promptly on time and finished quickly which was surprising for a such a big job. We will definitely be in touch for future projects!

I’m 47 years old and there are only 3 wood craftsman in my entire life that I’ve have been impressed with, John more than exceeded my expectations, what a treat to have a person with such knowledge and professionalism on my project. If you are looking to build a deck or have a door installed don’t do yourself the disservice of not hiring John, he will make you breathe a sigh of relief of the ease and awesomeness of his work and work ethic. Another bonus is his great attitude, as much as I will miss him when my projects are done, I’m sure he will miss my house since I had five yoga girls here complimenting his work and they all though he is an attractive manly man :) in all seriousness, I wish I found John years ago because I would have saved so much time and money doing it right. If there were 10 stars he would have 11

I have a few rental houses, I can always depend on David to give me quality work and a fair price. What I appreciate most is his diversity, it is rare to find an individual that I would trust in my personal home as well as my rentals. I need to rely on someone who can do many things, electrical, plumbing, drywall, building decks, & roofing you name it he can do it. I've had a working relationship with David for over 20 years. He does a great job! I've posted a large tile job he did for me a few years back and it still is in Great shape. David laid a wood floor in my home as well. I've received many compliments on how beautiful it is. Strongly recommend him!

My husband and I hired Contemporary Design Builders Inc. to build a Deck for the back of the house. His crew had the project finished in less time than expected and within budget. Carlos and his guys (Israel, Tonio, etc.) was very polite and professional. His bid was competitive. We are very happy with our new deck and look forward to working with this company again.

Javier worked a long time on our porch, helping with the choosing of the tile and ensuring that the deck was safe. He would stay late to finish. The project took longer and was more expensive than we expected, but that's the nature of projects. In all, we are satisfied.

I found Chris when I was given one of his fliers by a friend who raved about his work. I only deal with licensed contractors, since I've been burned before and there's little recourse when they disappear or change their phone#, plus eventually I have a lot of work I want to get done and I want it all legit in case I need permits,etc... And licenses tell me a person has made the effort to put his time in, learn a trade, and become licensed. It's cost me more money to fix things that have been done sub-par over the years. The paint on my house trim was peeling and I could see the wood was becoming damaged in some areas, which means more money to fix rotted wood, so I was anxious to get the exterior paint done. I shopped around. Chris gave me a fair estimate, plus he was confident in his work and I saw the results at my neighbor's house. I loved that he was very respectful of my house, my yard, clean up, and his work was so clean! He gave me a head's up that some of the wood may be more damaged once he sanded the old paint. He showed me the damaged wood and gave me the option to fix it or not, which of course needed to be done. He replaced some old window sills and window frames. You can't even tell which ones he replaced! Everything matches the other windows! I couldn't be more pleased. After a few weeks I saved some money and was still so excited about the outside of my house finally getting done right that I decided to get some work done in the bathroom. My house is 90 yrs old, the interior walls have plaster not drywall, which many guys don't want to touch, but Chris said "No problem!" it's one of his specialities. He explained what's involved, wrote an estimate, and now I've got one bathroom done and it looks AWESOME! My husband is impressed. We're going to have a dinner party with friends to celebrate. Chris is a solid guy with good old fashioned work ethic. We have only great things to say about his work! After the new year we're going to save money and have a deck built so my husband can barbecue outdoors. Thumbs up times a hundred!

I hired Patrick and Scott Coggins Construction to build patio. They were professional, courteous, fairly priced, and cleaned up after themselves every day and were a pleasure to have in my home. They also over completed handyman projects and they were fairly priced with that as well. I highly recommend Coggins Contruction for any future projects. Their reviews and pictures are what drove to this decision and I'm glad I took it because, I will continue to use them in the future.

Ivan does fantastic work. We hired him to remodel 3 properties in Murrieta that we purchased this year. These were big projects, here's some of the things Ivan did: repainting of all 3 interiors (his painter, Pat, did a superb job), repaired cracked tile, fixed loose and creaking floors, demolition and cleanup of an old deck, installation of a new sliding glass door, and many other things. He not only did great work on the houses, but did an amazing job with the landscaping. In fact, I had to have him go and fix the horrible job that another landscaper had done. Ivan is great and I definitely recommend him!

I hired Greg to replace a 43" piece of crown molding that was water damaged from a deck leak that was thought to have been repaired earlier. He removed the damaged section to discover the leak was never fixed and had destroyed support wood behind the wall and left black mold in that area. Instead of just patching the damaged area and replacing the molding as many would have done, he went right to the deck to get to the source of the problem. The fix was complicated, requiring creativity and a can do attitude and the experience to execute the solution. With the source of the problem eliminated, he then very expertly replaced the damaged piece. I suspect very few handy men could have accomplished this job the right way as Greg did in the shortest and least expensive way. If you need something, anything, done to full satisfaction don't hesitate to call him.

I would highly recommend Ron's Handyman Service. Ron showed up on time, promptly diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Everything he said went exactly as expected. I am going to have him build us a deck for us next.

After a phone chat, I sent Mr. Duin an e-mail outlining the projects I had in mind. I asked him to help me select those that fit into my quarterly budgets. Together we selected three that needed attention this winter. 1. stabilize a wobbly 6 foot block (gate) wall that was inches from a gas main, 2. Build a short block wall that would hold back dirt from a muddy embankment, 3. Reinforce a swaying wood fence and wrap metal posts with cedar – box style. Mr. Duin and staff did an outstanding job of listening to my needs. I was impressed with their work, quality of materials, work ethics and attention to detail. They were very pleasant to work with and I look forward to our next round of projects. I hope to include the trim/molding (with up lighting) along the ceiling of my front porch which will have to wait until early Spring – due to budget considerations.

Ron has done work for me for over 8 years and he has been reliable, honest and very good at his job. He worked as my general contractor on 2 new construction houses and a very complex remodel of my current home which we demolished to the slab and studs and rebuilt. He found me good sub contractors and made sure they did a good job. He also did alot of the carpentry, plumbing, drywall and roofing himself as well as a fabulous deck. He is experienced in all aspects of construction and understands building codes and how to work with City planning and permitting. Ron is one of the few builders I have found who truly stands behind his work long after the project is completed. He has also done small 'handyman' projects for me over the years. I highly recommend him and plan on using him on any future project, large or small, that I do.

Jaime did an excellent job replacing the deck. His bid was very reasonable and finished it on time. I bought all the materials and he just did the labor but he buys other stuff needed to keep the project going. He also gave advice on improving the design of the deck. I will definitely hire him again and recommend him to relatives & friends.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
