Hired Jose to complete a fabric patio cover installation. He was awesome!! Came to the house to review the job, gave me a reasonable quote, and completed the job the following week. His work was excellent and quick, and although we were short material to complete, he offered to return when we get the additional material to finish up the job. Thank you so much for the excellent experience!!

He installed a new backsplash, installed 2 new light fixtures, fixed and replaced floor tiles as well as other misc. Jobs on our home. Great bid pricing too. Honest guy. He also gets right back to you when you contact him. Highly recommended him for your home remodeling or repairs.

So pleased! Eddie's Professional Painting was the first to respond to my ad. I called, we talked, and I hired on Friday. As planned, Mario showed up at 8 a.m. on Sunday and was finished in approx. 7 hours. Mario worked straight through - I don't think he even took a break. His painting was excellent -- and we're talking wood trim around 9 windows and a large patio door, as well as painting repaired stucco adjacent to the trim (different color). I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Thank you very much -- and thanks to Thumbtack as well! Elaine Burroughs

Dennis is great! I hired him to install some tile in our kitchen where a previous homeowner had removed the backsplash to put in a window, but never finished the job. He was quick to respond, gave a reasonable quote, gave me some suggestions about where to look for tile to match the rest of the kitchen, and even tried to find the tile himself. Once I found/ordered the tile, he made himself available on a Saturday to install it. He showed up on time, did an excellent job, finished in just a few hours, and cleaned up afterward. I hope to use him again when we remodel our bathroom.

John just completed bifold closet door installation in the baby's room, as well as 11 interior door installation across the house. I was very impressed with John's quality of work. He was always on time every morning, efficient, and really knows his skill. John removed old interior doors, installed/painted new doors, installed new hardware and trim. For bifold closet door installation - he built out part of the wall to make doors fit. I feel like to have found John on Thumbtack and will be recommending John to friends and family!

Jay did a great job replacing my window frame. He gave me a fair price, and when the paint dried and there were some spots missing, he came back on his own time and touched it up for me. Would highly recommend!!

I am a journeyman carpenter and I bought an aluminum single hung window for my home. My back went out and I was unable to install the window. I used thumbtack services to find help. Nick (Left Coast Windows) installed the window at a very reasonable price. He is friendly, courteous and respectful. He does clean thorough work from the caulking to the trim to setting the window nice and square! I would hire him again if need be and will recommend him to everyone and anyone that needs windows installed. Thanks Nick, you're the best!

We hired Nick Sinyuk as our contractor for a complete kitchen remodel. We chose Nick based on his high Thumbtack ratings, as well as both his (low) estimates for cost and time completion of 2 weeks. While the job took him 4 weeks rather than 2, he worked very hard to build a beautiful kitchen that has received glowing reviews all-around. He cut no corners, used quality materials, and sought our input on every decision and detail. He rebuilt our kitchen from scratch -- this included: installation of a new wood floor that is immaculate, built a dreamy custom island, refinished our ceiling, and built an entire kitchen cabinet and counter area that maximized our space and storage. Our kitchen is a dream -- it is truly a chef's designer kitchen. We would hire Nick again based on his skilled craftsmanship, pricing, and timely work.

I have a 3 bedroom home in Irivine that had old metal windows. I met with about 3 companies and chose to do business with window source. The product and the pricing seemed very fair and much better than what I had seen from some others like sears and renewal by andersen. the windows havent been installed yet but everything is on track. looking forward to it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
