Mitch H. says, "Brian's Automation is fantastic! I am super impressed with every aspect of their business. Brian's Automation provided me with a clear, written, detailed estimate with price. He even used some very secure DocuSign software like you would see refinancing your house, and it was all very professional. It was a very fair price and I asked him to do the work. Edgar did an absolutely fantastic job and I was extremely happy with everything. He is very professional, polite, respectful and most of all, very knowledgeable about every aspect of my home network and new surveillance system. Before I found Brian's Automation, I was having difficulty obtaining a clear, concise estimate. One estimate had a price range with a high and low difference of over $3,000. I wish every contractor was as professional, qualified and easy to work with. I am very impressed and very pleased with the work performed, and the knowledge of the IP Camera's, the NVR and my network. One detail that really impressed me, was we went through each camera individually and He adjusted it exactly as I would like. I was going to ask for that but he did it without my asking. I highly recommend Brian's automation. I don't think you'll be disappointed."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

the electrician came the same day I was looking for a Pro and completed the job in a very short time since he definitely knew what he was doing. I had old wiring that was much older than the electrician but he knew exactly how to process and did a great job. I am very satisfied and would recommend him for and job big or small.

Luis is very professional, communicative, friendly, and honest. I had a ceiling fan installed by an electrician that was not done properly. Luis, who’s an electrician which is the reason why I hired him, came in and installed a brand new fan. He identified the issues with the prior installation and talked me through his work as he installed the new fan. He completed the installation within an hour. I look forward to working with him again and will share his information with my friends and family. Thank you Luis!

Mo.Co was very professional, did a clean job and did it for a great price. Hands down best value considering their were electricians that were charge nearly 4 times the price that Mo.Co offered and did it in less than 30min. Highly recommended, I will definitely be using him for future electrical work.

Look no further! Al is the only electrician you’ll ever need. Al and his colleague are honest, hardworking and their pricing was very reasonable. I needed a couple 240V outlets repaired/installed and some old electrical connections removed. Out of all of the other general contractors / electricians I had spoken to, Al was the only one who didn’t try to upsell me. In fact, he even talked me out of unnecessary work! I know this because other contractors tried to convince me to redo all of my electrical. Another electrician proposed running all the wires along the outside of the house, likely because he was a larger guy who wouldn’t have fit in our tight crawl spaces. So it was refreshing to finally get Al, who was honest and who has integrity. For the estimate, Al was also the only contractor who came prepared with his toolbox for the estimate. Unlike the others I had spoken to, Al actually opened up the sub-panel to assess the problem. On the actual day of the work, Al and his colleague showed up on time, got the work done and even cleaned up afterwards. I actually think they somehow left the garage more clean than when they started. I cannot recommend Al enough. I’ve been talking to all types of contractors for the past 2 months and I must say that the most positive experience I had was with Al. I will be going to Al for all of my electrical needs going forward and will be recommending him to anyone I know who needs electrical work.
