One of the young videographers from the studio filmed our event and did an excellent job. She was polite, professional and unobtrusive. She brought a sound system with her which we used to give short presentations to the guest of honor. I was very pleased with how adept she was. Now we await the editing of the footage, which is being done in the studio, to produce a DVD of the event. I have high hopes and every reason to believe it will be top notch. They are responsive, clear, accurate and business like in all their communications. I will post another review when we have the finished product. Jennifer from Pleasant Hill

(SPANISH BELOW) I want to highly recommend Nabor for your next photography project. I was contacted by my book editor asking for a head sot for my next novel. I live in Petaluma, CA and after looking at the rates of local photographers I tried this website. I obtained several bids and since I know very little about photography I asked my son for his opinion (he does photography for fun). After looking at the work of the people who sent bids he advised me that Nabor's work was the best "hands down". I negotiated with Nabor and he traveled to Petaluma to take the photos. We met early in the morning and when I got there he was already waiting for me. I was immediately impressed with his professional demeanor and flexibility. We walked around town and he knew exactly where the right background was. I knew then I was working with an artist. The love for his work is apparent in the photos he took. He got it right from the third photo but went on to take 191 photos!!!. The difficult part for me has been having to decide on just one photo. Nabor is definitely the best photographer I have ever worked with. There is something else beautiful about Nabor and that is that his first language is Spanish which is also my first language. It was truly a pleasurable experience to collaborate with someone passionate about his work. His photo will be a blessing to my novel. Thank you Nabor. Gracias Nabor.

Clearlight Video & Photography captured the best of my wedding. Lawrence is professional, kind, outgoing, curious, thoughtful, and takes the initiative to get the perfect shot. He calmly and tactfully directed our guests into the frame to get all the compositions we asked for (and more). Lawrence has a natural ability to capture real emotion and personality from strangers, such that many of our best photos are his candids. Moreover, all of our guests complimented us on his professionalism, friendliness, and ability to get people in the shot to compose good images. Lawrence was easy to work with throughout the process. We negotiated a price easily, even though my situation was fairly unique. Lawrence also allowed me access to his RAW files, something many photographers refuse to do. When I was unable to transfer the files to my computer after the event, Lawrence made additional arrangements to ensure I received them. Lawrence even continued to work on some of my images after the event had completed and he had been paid in full, sending me his alterations gratis. In sum, I speak for all of my guests in saying we were incredibly impressed with Lawrence's work. Measured by quality, I can see the services of Clearlight Video & Photography easily costing in excess of $2,000, especially in the Bay Area. I consider Lawrence's photography services to be the best bargain of my wedding, and give him my highest recommendation.

Sheila is not only a talented photographer but also very professional. She is very communicative and was a pleasure to work with. She was a joy to have around during the wedding day and was honestly a "fly on the wall" unlike other wedding photographers who are too "in it". The pictures she takes are beautiful and extremely well priced. I would not hesitate to work with her again. I actually look forward to it.

Stavan and his team were the photographers and videographer at our wedding a couple of weeks ago in Gilroy CA. They were reliable, energetic, personable, very creative and professional in every way. The showed us on time. Every guest was impressed how approachable they were. We can't wait to see the photos! My wife is counting down the dates to get the pictures and I feel sure they are going to amaze us! I will return with more reviews after we get the pictures and videos.

Jeff was smart, prepared, and professional. I selected him over other photographers because my impression was that he approached a job with the customer's needs at heart, and his work at our event certainly bore that out. He communicated well, was unobtrusive and helpful, and oh by the way he took some wonderful pictures of people engaged and working together at our event. You will enjoy working with Jeff, I promise.

I highly recommend Patrick Power! I needed a professional portrait for a legal job application, and I hadn't had one taken in over 20 years. I wanted it to be professional, but also unique. I wasn't sure how to find a photographer, so I just put out a bid on thumbtack. Patrick responded very quickly and with a very reasonable price. I had resigned myself to just getting a studio portrait with a neutral background, but Patrick had the idea of meeting at City Hall to take the photo. I was very nervous and self-conscious about the process. I don't like having my picture taken and I am not very photogenic. It helped that City Hall was full of other photographers taking pictures of brides, grooms, and other people like me, so I didn't really stand out. I had a problem and ended up being pretty late to our meeting, but Patrick was very nice about it. I was sweating like crazy in my suit, but he did a good job of putting me at ease and letting me rest and cool down for a little bit white while he staked out spots to take the photo. He talked with me casually about what I was looking for in the photo, but we also made small talk about our lives and work, so that soon I felt very comfortable with him. As a result, I looked very natural in the photo. Patrick took a lot of shots, and several of them were quite good. I needed the work done on very short notice, including a print. I made the bid on a Sunday, we did the photo shoot on Monday, and I had the print by Tuesday morning. I love the photo, and my family and friends do too. Everyone agreed that not just my appearance, but also my personality comes through in the photo. I will definitely call Patrick again if I need another photo taken in the future!

Ahhhh, I absolutely love our photos! Andrea photographed our daughter's first birthday party. She was an absolute pro, on time, low maintenance, sleuth-y. :) The images are amazing and she gave us soooo many. (So often photographers only give 10-20 as part of the rate, but Andrea shared over 200 with us.) She was lovely, talented, and responsible. I would hire her again and so should you!

Eric and Claire were a delight to have as our photographers. Each time we spoke with Eric, he came prepared with ideas on locations. Before the actual day, he scouted out additional locations. We liked his work which is why we picked him. But, our wedding was on Saturday and we've already seen some samples, and we love, love what we've seen so far. Eric is professional, accommodating and his passion for his work is apparent. Even our guests enjoyed his presence at the wedding. We couldn't be happier with our experience of working with him.

If you’ve been waiting for “that one review” to really prove that Oaktown Boudoir is the way to go- don’t wait anymore! Cheshire Isaacs is a true exemplar of all that a professional boudoir photographer should strive to be. He is open and receptive to his client’s ideas without losing focus. He is honest and genuine without ever being insensitive. He is incredibly professional without ever being stuffy. The Bay Area is filled with Boudoir Photographers, so I guess the best way to write a proper review is to outline what exactly my own (popular) concerns were and how Cheshire proved triumphant! 1. Will I be comfortable? As a young woman, I was a little concerned about being erotically photographed by a man. Having been through a shoot, it’s obvious that Cheshire cares- from his personally designed music playlists (made in the interest of making the experience as comfortable as possible) to his handmade cheese and cracker platters. He continually went above and beyond for my session and I admire his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication. It shows in both his beautiful work and the long-lasting relationships he has with his clients. He spoke about his wife and daughter frequently, something that showed me his appreciation and respect for women, immediately putting me at ease. 2. Can his studio fit more than one “style” of photoshoot? Cheshire’s studio is open, bright, and filled with possibilities. He can transform the space to fit, I kid you not, any personality and style. In a matter of minutes (just enough time to refill a wine glass), his studio can go from a brightly lit angelic state to a dark, sexy, and sultry one. He mentioned having custom-designed the space alongside his wife, something that told me just how invested he was in the style and overall vibe of his studio. For my images in particular, I knew that I wanted little editing and wanted the images to be as “real” as possible. Somehow Cheshire still made it look like I was a model and knew exactly how to manipulate each pose to accentuate all the good and cleverly soften all the bad (without photoshop). 3. Will I get my money’s worth? Whichever amount of time you decide to book Cheshire for, know that not a minute will be wasted. He knows how to get down to business and not waste time while simultaneously not rushing through any poses. This guy was sweating as he climbed up and down ladders, moved heavy couches and bed sets, and adjusted lights. His hard work pays off in the beauty of his finished products! His experience in the field is obvious in the way he can quickly evaluate a pose and make small nuanced changes in position to get a desired look. I am but a poor college student and Cheshire’s prices were definitely better than most photographers around. He could easily charge three times as much for his services and would still be the deal of a lifetime. 4. Will my images be published? Cheshire was very thorough and attentive when listening to what I was comfortable with. He assured me that no images would be posted without explicit approval. In the end, his work was so beautiful that I would have been fine with it being printed on billboards and bus ads- really! 5. What about makeup? Cheshire notified me in one of our first correspondences that he had a partnership with a makeup artist, Thuy, who would be on-site for a small fee. Let me tell you- Thuy is more than simply a makeup artist- she really does it all. Not only did she do an absolutely spectacular job with my makeup, but she was the ultimate hype-woman!!! She stayed for nearly the entire session for touch-ups, glamour, and enthusiastic words of support. The experience wouldn’t have been the same without her. Every person that sees the finished images says, “Wow, I wish I’d done something like this.” Don’t be that person! Don’t wait another day, don’t look for another review, don’t google “Boudoir Photographer” again. Oaktown Boudoir is that good. Doing a boudoir shoot is obviously a large lump sum of money to dedicate to something that isn’t necessarily “necessary,” but my experience with Oaktown Boudoir is something that I will truly treasure for the rest of my life and always reflect on with a smile and a deep, deep appreciation for Cheshire Isaacs! He knows how to make a client feel like a friend, and that’s something you don’t come by often.

I had to do a short congratulatory video for a friend who is collecting a major award at the Cannes Festival. I come from the ad industry so I'm used to working with filmmakers, photographers etc; I found Ilja to be totally professional, easy to work with (even when I switched the brief) and affordable. He also has a good eye for lighting and performance. Would I use him again? Absolutely.

I've been modeling for about a year now, and the only reason I was even able to get my foot in the door a fraction of the way was because of Nico. He was the first person I ever shot with. Since that time we have worked together numerous other times. My favorite thing about Nico, besides his obviously gorgeous photographs, is how comfortable he makes me feel when we shoot. I love pushing the boundaries of my art and being able to work with Nico is the only way I'm able to do that. Nico loves what he does and it shows 100% of the way through his work. He cares about making me, and every other model he's worked with I have no doubt, feel respected. This is a huge problem in the industry, but photographers like Nico are hopefully the forefront of a big change that needs to happen. I use so many photo's that Nico has taken of me in my portfolio, and my agent loves them .

Rich Jarvis was the photographer for our wedding, and I couldn't be happier with his thorough documentation of our big day. Rich has a great eye and gives good direction. He listened to what we wanted too. He got pictures of all major objects and our guests, plus awe inspiring shots of us. He's equally skilled at candid shots, picking touching and funny moments. He also has a very calming presence which is so important on such a nerve racking day. I highly recommend hiring him.

I absolutely loved the photographer and the quality of the photos she produced. It was very easy to work with her and the outcome of the photographs were stunning! The raw images she took of our event were exactly what I was looking for and she took my directions and overall vision into consideration while taking her pictures. She was worth every penny and it was a great price that didn't compromise on quality. She also does beautiful landscapes as well, despite the pictures for my event being mostly people. Ultimately, the photographer was a superstar that delivered on personality, professionalism, and beautiful photographs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
