Maggie is my fourth dog. I have had trainers with each of the dogs. Never have I had a more competent, compassionate and professional trainer as Karen. She taught Maggie to walk loose leash and not enter a room before more or my husband. I used to have to carry her everywhere. She's only 9 pounds but it got old really fast. I also had Karen board/train her for two days. She came back a different dog. When Karen came today for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog. When Karen came for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog, she got so excited when seeing Karen. Karen knows how to be firm yet kind with dogs. Dogs know it. I couldn't recommend anyone more highly than Karen. She is the best of the best. Barry K. Sherman Oaks

I had a private training session with Dee Cee, and it was worth every penny! She has a real passion for training dogs and she is very respectful, clear, thorough and effective. My dog Gubi has behavior problems and Dee Cee came up with methods that immediately worked! She also gave me great tools and tips to use in the future. I was so impressed with Gubi's progress in just a day and I feel like I know my dog much better now. Thank you Dee Cee!!

John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

I have just completed my personalized training course with Canine Companions as of May 31st and the entire experience was enlightening and delightful. My furry friend is a 3 year old male blue nose Pit Bull terrier and I needed a knowledgeable professional to teach me how to best train and care for my friend. Kym not only did that but so much more. I understand dog hierarchy and the leader/follower tendencies of the pack mentality so much more thoroughly now. She not only taught me what works with dogs and how to keep their respect and obedience but WHY it works as well. I didn't have to overcome any severe issues with my Pittie, as he has a great general disposition as it is. What we worked on was asserting my role as a leader to him and how to make my boy know that I was in charge and that he could trust in me and follow my direction all in a safe, positive, learning environment. You never have to lift a hand to your dog if you know how to properly address the issues you have with them! After three sessions with Kym I am now to able to walk him on the leash with him at my side and no longer pulling and dragging along to the next spot for him to sniff or mark, I AM IN CONTROL, and he happily rambles on along side me enjoying the walk and accepting my direction without challenging it. Among that huge step in my relationship with him we learned how to properly reinforce the basic commands with a dog that I feel personally are oft overlooked as to how critical they are to a dogs growth and the relationship you share with them. I know how to execute these commands in a way to will not confuse my pup or contradict other commands I have given thus confusing the poor guy. Kym not only helped me fix his bad habits, but my own bad habits as well. I thank her dearly for that. Kym was on time with our meetings, always had treats on hand to reinforce his training, and was always more than happy to teach helpful tips and advice on proper care and health topics concerning our four legged friends. I can proudly show off my friendly and obedient Pit Bull Terrier thanks to Kym and her vast amount of knowledge and care she has for these creatures. It was the very best time and money I have spent with my dog and I absolutely believe that EVERY dog owner should experience instruction such as hers, everyone would benefit from responsible owners and safe healthy and happy pets!

I have one cat and two dogs, and they are my life. I truly wish I could spend all the time in the world with them, but I have a grueling work schedule and can't walk my little guys on weekdays. Superstar walks my dogs Mon-Fri and are so flexible with my fluctuating schedule. I'm so glad my friend referred me to Superstar! They really treat my furry little babes like the stars they are LOL. Barbie is wonderful, I have personally talked to her on several occasions and she is very sweet and understanding about my pets' needs. Specifically my cat Elvis who has issues trusting new people. Sometimes it's hard to find a dog walking company that is also great with cats, but they are experts with both. Since it went so well with feeding my cat and walking my dogs, I have also hired them for a few overnight stays while I am out of town. I know my pets really appreciate not being left alone for hours on end. There has never been a problem with that either, I know I could trust them. So, I highly reccomend Super Star and feel comfortable referring them to my closest friends and family.

We took our two bully puppies to Steve welch and his partner Wendy for in kennel training. We returned two weeks later to pick up the dogs. They both knew how to sit, stay and heel after only two weeks! We are now continuing the training at our home and we see excellent results everyday. Steve and Wendy have so much knowledge of canine behavior and they know how to use that knowledge to bring out the best behavior in dogs. I was really blown away by the whole experience. Training ones dogs takes lots of effort and repetition. It is not for the faint of heart. I can see why some May view their techniques as harsh but that is not the case. Dogs are not people and they need the structure and training that Steve offers. We intend on going back for more lessons and we are very grateful to them. We now have manageable well behaved dogs. Thanks Steve and Wendy!!

We needed help with our 4 month old English bulldog. She came in the same day we made contact and gave us great tips and pointers from food, vets, and training. She was really patient, kind and professional. She knew what she was talking about and is perfect if you are looking for a local dog trainer. Thus far we have met just once but I highly recommend her and we plan on having her back to our home for additional training.

Arturo is such an amazing trainer!!! He has helped and coached us on how to control our dogs aggression. He not only trained our dog but taught us how to properly train her. He’s helped restore confidence both in us and our dog to allow her to be her loving social self again! We could not have done it without Arturos dedication and patience!

If you're reading this review, then you are quite aware of the convenience hiring a professional dog walker can do. For example, you probably know that you're dog is not just any dog, and whomever you're entrusting their care into, you're going to need research and fact-check and then price compare, and that takes time that, obviously you don't have because you are here searching for a dog walker. And trust me, there is nothing wrong with that. Alison was a Godsend to me. Other than my boy, I live alone. And I work. And sometimes, work doesn't end when I think it might. Having Alison visit Winston each afternoon, gave me the piece of mind I needed, so I could focus on what it is that is going to keep me at my desk for a while yet. Alison was so good to him. And I could tell from her messages, that they were really quite compatible. Winston is not an easy dog to control, when he wants to chase something. I was impressed with how Alison handled him in those instances. Look, save yourself some time, save yourself some worry, and book a meet and greet and see if you don't agree with all I'm going on about.

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

Jo stayed with our pets - dog and cat - while we were away. The pets were happy when we returned and the house was in better shape than we left it. I plan to ask Jo to take care of the pets and house when I have to travel again. I highly recommend her to anyone needing a house/pet sitter.

Finding a responsible, caring and professional dog sitter is more than a pet owner can ask for. Arlene not only asked me all the right questions, but also tuned into all of Odin's subtle yet critical (signals) body language. With this, she successfully assisted and aided his every need. Odin is not just my senior canine, but he also has special needs that require 24hr. care and observation. Arlene's compassion and patience not only put all the animals at ease in my home but her professional demeanor was also reflected through the relationships that she established in my home with my fur babies. Arlene quickly established a connection with my dog and assisted him with all of his needs (getting up, re-adjusting,and going potty) as well as administered all of his meds., not to mention cared for my cats as well. If it were not for Arlene, I would not have been able to take my trip with peace of mind. I plan to use Arlene as a regular sitter and Strongly recommend Arlene as a pet sitter/care giver

If you are looking for a reliable, professional dog trainer that gets you results, Ayumi is hands down the best in the business. Our little fur monster, Rollie, had social behavior issues when we first adopted him. After being recommended by a friend, we decided to put Rollie through Ayumi's program. I really wished I would've found Ayumi earlier. We discovered a whole new side of Rollie we had never seen before. The transformation is truly incredible. Thank you, Ayumi!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
